The countdown is on!
It's that time of year again! The Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is next Saturday, and the people are already starting to prepare. RVs filled with Florida and Georgia rednecks (;)) are filling up parking lots around Alltel Stadium and they are adding 5,000 more seats to bring the total capacity to 83,000. Orange and blue and red and black clothing are flying off the shelves at sports stores. Everyone is planning their outfits for Friday... Florida/Georgia Day at 99.9% of the workplaces around town!
It's an exciting time of year here and I always look forward to this huge rivalry. Even though FL will probably lose this year, but I remain positive!
It's sold out and I'm still hoping I get a ticket through my connections (i.e. thousands of relatives) but if not, I'll definitely be downtown somewhere watching the game. Although it's much more fun at the game... just seeing how the fans at the stadium create this illusion that it is split into two different colors (orange and red) and the sounds and the excitement cannot be beat! Not to mention the awesome tailgating!
GO GATORS!!!!!!

Wow....look at all the Noles in a UGA/UF thread. Oh, they must be wonderin' what ole Mark Richt is doing since he left that erector set in Tally and left Jeff Bowden in charge.
UF has everything against them....they can't score....blah, blah, blah.......whatever.

Is it just me or does any one else see this as not a "huge rivalry". I would be serious to find out how this rivalry is viewed in other parts around the country. Sure its big on a local scale but I wonder if it has any national visability other than a bunch of necks putting the wheels back on thier trailers and rolling them to J-ville for a weekend "cocktail party".
Memo to those tailgating at this game. Make sure the opposum was freshly killed instead of picked up on the side of the rode on the way to J-ville.

Uhhh......Florida State....Tallahassee.....Florida....PANHANDLE...by far the most po-dunk place in the state and its not even close there, southern GA-BAMA. Just because they plopped the state capitol there didn't change much. Jax, Miami, Tampa, Orlando are far more cosmo then that backwoods area of the state.Nolesy wrote:Is it just me or does any one else see this as not a "huge rivalry". Nolesy, I think the rest of the country views Florida/Georgia as an awesome CF party but nothing special in terms of being a significant football rivalry.
It's just another fun backyard brawl, with the added attraction of an overabundance of seriously shitfaced and out of control SEC coeds all trying to outdo each other in the Slut Stakes...
(Which, in reality, makes it the single most important game of the year! :-) )
Otherwise, it has no real lore attached to it. It's no Iron Bowl and it never seems to have the impact on the CF landscape of Florida St/Miami or even Florida/Florida St...

What Van said, this series is known for the atmosphere not the actual game. I'd love to go though, that Slut Stakes sounds pretty freaking sweet.Van wrote:Nolesy, I think the rest of the country views Florida/Georgia as an awesome CF party but nothing special in terms of being a significant football rivalry.

In Vegas they refer to the over/ under as how many children were born outside of the families gene pool rather than how many total points will be scored.
I don't know why they call it a cocktail party. When did they start calling old english and natty lights cocktails?
seriously, this game causes a great deal of financial conflict for the gator fans. Do I pay the lot rent at the trailer park or put the shell on the back of the pick up and make the rodie to the game?

I guess I don't know where you reside because you have just recently appeared. Is your team winning some games?

Van resides in Sacramento and is a USC fan. He's been on these boards for awhile, but was in the basement for quite some time until recently.Nolesy wrote:I guess I don't know where you reside because you have just recently appeared. Is your team winning some games?
He's also been a USC fan since the days when they sucked, even before that.

For all the people cracking on fans of both teams (some of it justified), if it were up to me, this would be the pick game in the Pick 'Em this week. It's the only game featuring two Top 25 teams, other than Northwestern-Michigan, both of whom bring up the rear of the Top 25.

Dude, I've been here (the various "here"s) since, what, 2000?
Definitely since SCII, if not the original SCI...
My allegiance to USC is long standing and very well known throughout all the Rome spin off boards.
Anyway, born and raised in L.A. before moving to the Ventura County beach cities before moving up here to Sacramento eleven years ago...
In terms of "inbred/incest" smack you can be certain that Tallahassee is every bit as much of a target of it nationwide as Gainesville or Athens, and the division between 'em is even smaller if you're from a place like L.A. or the Bay Area...

As for SEC matchups - there is always a game of the year kind of feel to a late October matchup of top 5 SEC unbeatens. The participants might shift a bit, but this game seems to be there every year. This matchup will cause some shifting in the BCS numbers, for sure.

A conversation likely to be overheard at this years Fl./Ga. game.
Fl.fan: man I got so drunk last year I blew chunks when I got home from the game.
Ga. fan; thats nothing, I wrecked my car on the way home after I drunk to much.
Fl. fan: you don't get it. My dog's name is chunks.

I've been a ND fan since I was younger than he is now (in the early years, I didn't follow it that well, more or less I just said I was a ND fan), and I'm an ND alum. I lived in Jax for 3 1/2 years while I was in the Navy and felt like I was out on an island in terms of my college football allegiance. Because I'm an alum, I was hoping he'd be a fan as well. It's only natural.Patsy Stone wrote:Smart kid. ;)Terry in Crapchester wrote: Believe it or not, he has decided that he's a Gator fan. :o
Look, I was born and raised in Jacksonville. Every Jax native is a fan of the Gators and Jags. It's a natural thing. Don't be a hata! I ain't hatin' on your sucky teams! ;)
Besides, there seemed to be a fair amount of Georgia and FSU fans in Jax, if my memory serves correctly.

Here are some funny Florida Gator jokes posted in our newspaper in the spirit of the weekend!
Why did Florida choose orange as their team color?
You can wear it to the game on Saturday, hunting on Sunday, and picking up trash along the highway the rest of the week.
Why can't Urban Meyer go on the internet?
He can't put together 3 Ws.
How many Gators does it take to fix a flat tire?
Just one ... unless it's a blowout, then they all show up!
What do you get when you cross a Gator with a groundhog?
Six more weeks of bad football.
What's the best thing to come out of Gainesville?
Interstate 75.
Why is UF changing their mascot to the 'Possum?
Because they play dead at home and get killed on the road.
What's the difference between a Gator and a carp?
One is a bottom-feeding scum sucker ... and the other is a fish.
Did you hear about the Florida Gator terrorist who tried to blow up the Bulldawgs team bus?
He burned his lip on the tailpipe.
Did you know that Adam was a Gator?
He had to be because he was eating an apple while sitting next to a naked lady.
Why did the Gator grad marry the cow?
He had to.
What is 100 yards long and has three teeth?
The front row at a Gator home game.
Why did Forrest Gump choose 'Bama over UF?
He wanted an academic challenge.
What is the difference between Urban Meyer and a litter of puppies?
Eventually, the puppies will grow up and stop whining.
What do you call 12 Gators in a basement?
A "whine" cellar.
Why don't Gators use 911 in an emergency?
They can't find 11 on the dial.
What is the difference between a Gator and Rice Crispies?
Rice Crispies know what to do in a bowl.
A guy walks into a bar and says, "Hey barkeep, did you ever hear the one about the Florida Gators?" Four huge men stand up and approach the man. One of them says, "We play football at UF -- are you sure you wanna tell the joke?" The guy replies, "What, and have to explain it four times?"
