If the Hornets do remain in OKC do you switch your allegiances?

I going to take in a few games while me and my wife are in the OKC area; hopefully a Spurs game.

Sorry, SCS ... just now saw this.

As a 20+year Spurs fan, I won't be switching allegiances.

You may find some Mavs fans in Oklahoma who will start supporting the Hornets instead ... I'm just happy I'll be able to see my Spurs in person twice this year with only having to drive an hour and a half.

I'm going to be at both Spurs-Hornets games in OKC. If you make it up for either the Dec. 16 or Jan. 25 game, shoot me a PM and we can grab something to eat in Bricktown before the game, or hook up for a brew at the arena.

Sounds like a plan my wife is going ape shit about the possibility of catching the Spurs in action live again.

Flipping between Spurs/Nuggets and the Hornets/Kings games last night, I noticed there were a poopload of people in the Ford Center for the Hornets game. Very glad to see that. From talking to people around here, most people plan on going to see at least one Hornets game. Some I think will switch allegiance, but some won't. My husband and I will also be at both Spurs games (WHOO HOO!!!) - cheering for the Spurs of course.

As a new OKC resident (have been commuting from Tulsa since August and will move the family over Thanksgiving weekend) and a basketball fan, I'm pretty excited about the Hornets being in OKC. I was back in Tulsa tonight to arrange for some of the move and check my kid out of school tomorrow, and saw the last half of the game on tv. They look like a fun team to watch, definitely a young team and a building effort...but OKC is solidly behind them for as long as they have them.

And hey, even though they are selling well, Hornets tickets are still easier to come by than for my beloved OSU Cowboys! I have to wait for students to be gone on winter break or watch them on tv....or fork out 800 per seat minimum for season tickets, which I am not going to do.

I may try and catch the December 16 Hornets game, since we will be settled in by then and it's on a Friday. Let me know if any of you will be around and we could meet up for a beer before the game or at the arena.

OKC is a pretty fun place these days.

The Oklahoma Hornets....Do they have hornets in Ok?? It would be silly to keep the name if there arent any hornets in Olahoma. It wouldn't make any sense.

Hornets name didn't start as an insect. It is North Carolina history. Study some of the Reveloutionary War ;).

Hornets in NC, Gamecocks in SC.

New Orleans averaged just above 10,000 fans a game, OKC is averaging 18,000+ a game and is 4th in the NBA in attendance (I think but I know it is top 6 definatly). They sold over 9,000 season tickets the first 5 days they went on sale after the move.

The is a real chance they stick around but I would say it is 40% chance of them staying, 20% chance back to New Orleans, and 40% they end up somewhere else.

It's not that no one wants to go back what it comes down to is will New Orleans be economically viable. Both the Aint's and the Hornets were already surviving off of city and state subsidises. The State and City can't afford basic living requirments much less annuity payments for sports franchises right now.

Like some else already said...

Will the last team to leave New Orleans please turn out the lights.

OKC is supporting the Hornets big time, and I'm not talking about the City and the efforts for street parties and attendance. That's all in the news.

What I hear is just people I talk to. At school, my students are going to the games, some with parents and some with friends. At the hairdresser..the blue hairs are talking about taking their kids and grandkids to the games. At the local convenience store, Hornet talk comes up and people talk about a chance to go to a game on a day off or an evening where they have time. It's all over the place.

Some folks think that OKC would be an unlikely place for an NBA team to be so supported. Why would Oklahoma people support a basketball team?

People think of kids in the inner cities that have nothing to do but play basketball. What they forget is that there are a lot of small town and rural kids who play basketball because it is the only thing to do where they are, and the only sport that many of the small schools can support. There are some great basketball fans in Oklahoma, and I think that is coming out with the Hornets now.

I am one of those people. I grew up playing basketball on a dirt halfcourt and at a small school. Left that to a bigger school where I didn't play, and then started playing again as an adult. I still go to any basketball game I can, and will hit some Hornets games once we get moved over to OKC in our own house soon. My dream would be to take my dad to a Hornets game. The man is 80 years old and knows more about basketball than anyone I know, and I would love to take him to an NBA game.

The Sooners and the Cowboys get mad suppor for their games. I think OKC would be ideal for a franchise. Granted I've never been there but from what I've read and from what I've seen as far as Sooner and Cowboy support the Hornets in OKC would be a good thing. Granted George Shinn is a scumbag for an owner so buyer beware.

And if you dont want em Las Vegas could use an NBA franchise. :wink:

Good point on Shinn. I think the Bible Belters in OKC have simply ignored the fact that he basically got run out of Charlotte for something resembling moral reasons.

I hope we can keep them. Still waiting to get the family moved over there in the next few days and hopefully catch a game before Christmas.

Still for me...hard to compete with college basketball. OSU was on the radio tonight and they are playing pretty well for a young team. Getting all the former high school stars thinking in terms of team instead of all about them...too fun.

The cool thing about the Hornets from what I have heard on the radio on games and on local tv, they are so young they play pretty up tempo. OKC is set to have some patience with them, will be fun to see how it all plays out. And as we all know, it's a freakin LONG season so we will have lots of time to see how the team develops and how the city will support them.

So the verdict right now is...we love them and they aren't bored in OKC yet, so you can't have them :)

Talk to them after they lose a whole bunch of games, play to an empty house while all the college teams are in the NCAA tourney..and then the tornadoes come in the spring. Las Vegas may be looking pretty good right about then :)

Sorry this is not what occured to Shinn. Shinn tried to force feed Charlotte a new Arena on his terms and left the city no choice but to tell to STFU and take a hike. The NBA new Shinn had fucked up and granted Charlotte a new team, a team that is getting/gotten a new arena on mutual terms with the city. The Bobcats are also twice as successful in Charlotte as the Hornets were in New Orleans.

I won't be out until the January game. I am tying up loose ends at my work before we cane get out there. :( It's been hectic to say the least. :(

Should be out there by Christmas... should. I'll be at the Oklahoma/Alabama game come hell or highwater though.
