Horrible scene at the JOE
Someone on Redwings fell near the door to get on ice.
the team doctor ran out, and they started pumping his chest with their hands.
whoaaaa hopefully they can revive the guy, they moved cameras, and no inof yet.
JIRI Fisher is the guy trying to be revived.
WHOAAAAAAAAAA

The first thing I did was look at which players were still standing at the time to figure out who went down. It could've been a fan that went over the railing but you could see the red jersey when they were trying to zoom in. One shot showed a 2 and with that side of the bench, likely a defenseman, I figured Jiri. Scary moment because you just don't know how bad it was and what condition he's in. The game is secondary at this point...I wonder if they will even finish it.
Get well Fisch!
Get well Fisch!
FSN Detroit showed a tight shot of the bench and it showed Fisch sitting on the bench and his forehead resting against the top of the boards. Clearly, nothing hit him. He's had heart problems in the past so that's what my initial thought was. The play was away from the bench so no way was it going to a puck. They showed some of the battling near the bench and speculation was an errant stick struck him on the bench but the footage clearly showed nothing hit him. He flat out collapsed.
I'm grateful to hear he's okay and I totally understand them calling off the game because I don't know anyone would want to play after witnessing that. The guy could've died without people taking action quickly. The staff on hand at the Joe and the rest of the Wings should be commended for their bravery and leadership in helping Jiri get the help he needed.
One sickening thing was hearing some of the fans boo when the announcement came that the game was being called off. How selfish can you be? Yeah, tickets cost a lot but a guy nearly died and you're worried about not getting your money's worth? With Thanksgiving coming up, you just be thankful you have your health and that Jiri is going to be okay. Considering what has happened to the Wings and at the Joe in recent years...these fans should be a little more sensitive about what happened. Konstantinov's limo accident, Chris Pronger being hit in the chest during a playoff game, Yzerman being hit in the eye last season and now this...too much drama for me.
Best wishes to Jiri and his family and I hope he can make a full recovery...

I hate to say this but ESPN doesn't give a rip about this. I know I sound bitter because it was one of my guys that could've died out there but since this story doesn't involve T.O., steroids, the BCS, the Red Sox or the Yankees...they won't give it more than a minute of coverage. During the incident, I flipped over to ESPNEWS and they were still yapping about the Red Sox getting Josh Beckett. They've already replaced Fischer's condition with a T.O. update under Breaking News. Geez, thanks for update...didn't have my hourly Owens news, so glad they can provide that for us.
The bottom line is that he's in stable condition and hopefully his health is improving...I'm very thankful for that. FSN Detroit hasn't gotten a lot of new information because the hospital isn't allowing reporters inside. We'll have to wait probably until the morning to get the best udpate on Fisch.

To be fair to the fans at the Joe that were unhappy about the cancellation, I would venture to guess that they didn't realize the situation. I didn't see or hear what announcements were made, but I doubt that they made the sobre announcement that Mr. Fischer nearly died.
Glad to see the guy will be OK. Hockey is hockey, you wanna kill your opponent, but you never want to see anyone die.

I'd like to think those who booed didn't understand the severity of the situation. I'll give them a little benefit of the doubt but considering it was a Red Wing that went down, you'd hope for a little sensitivity from the home fans.

The Predators and Wild had honored the memory of Sergei Zholtok over the weekend, then Nashville was witness to what happened last night.

It's a complete joke that Detroit cancelled the game on account of a guy, who had documented heart troubles, falling to the floor.
Detroit should have forfeited the game and given the win to Nashville. I'm sure the Preds would have had no problem continuing.
The Fish is more than OK. He's probably embarassed that they cancelled.
Take into account that people die in this league quite often. When the little girl died...they didn't cancel. An 11 year old girl dying, due to actions from the ice, is a lot more traumatic than heart attack guy actually having a heart attack. Remember when the old guy keeled over into the Leafs bench? Dead on the spot. The other major sports would never have cancelled.

I predict a call from the Detroit Red Wings to the Boston Celtics front office
on how to deal with this kind of thing.
Fischer won't get near the ice until he is thoroughly checked out. I predict that he won't play again. If you doubt me just do a Google for Reggie Lewis.
Rat, he's "more than OK"??? Dude would have died right then and there had they not done CPR and defibbed him.

His heart stopped...that's not one of those 'walk it off' injuries. I know RP likes to stir the shit but he sat on his brain this time. Sometimes people forget that these guys are human beings too. It was surreal to see Lang and Shanahan usher Jiri's fiance on the ice or seeing Yzerman rush the stretcher across the ice to the Red Wings bench. You don't see that for most injuries...this was some serious shit.

Yeah yeah yeah...
You can say I'm stirring the pot all you want...I'm hardly alone in my opinion that they shouldn't have cancelled, or they should have forfeited.
Obviously, you're emotionally attached to the situation.
I'm thinking back to Mr. Clint Malarchuk... Sliced thyroid artery... bleeding to death on the ice.. They didn't cancel. They got him out of there..took him to the hospital...and play resumed. Buffalo had their ass handed to them.
Trent Macleary... dying on the ice due to a collapsed throat. Play resumed.
I just saw Holland saying that he's fine...and doing "very, very well".
I have given 4 separate incidents of severe injury & death. None of them resulted in stoppage of the game.
Moaning about how I'm stirring the pot is just hysteria. I'm just keeping it real. I'm not dwelling in the surreal.

Rat Pack are you ignorant or just stupid?
Were you also against canceling the third period in the Philly game after Bush's 9/11 speech? Or postponing the games in Florida this year due to the hurricanes. All the players we visibly shaken, I'm sure if forced to resume play it would have made for a great game.
Having said that, I guess the seizure robots won't be back on the jumbo-tron any time soon.

First off, the 911 speech was in the pre-season. Hardly comparable.
The Florida cancellations had nothing to do with the team. I had to do with arena employees and the fact that no one would have shown up.
Your two examples have absolutely nothing to do with the NHL's lack of policy..regarding cancelling a game because of player injury.
Go away, Joey.

He didn't die, you stupid piece of shit. He survived and wound up retiring at the end of the 99-00 season. The Rat Pack wrote: Trent Macleary... dying on the ice due to a collapsed throat. Play resumed.
In any case, this isn't like what happened to Malarchuk or McCleary or anyone else. This isn't a game-related injury. This was a guy damn near dying on the fucking bench because of something that wasn't even remotely connected to the game.
Christ, how can one person be so goddamn stupid?

Hey Drip, did I say Trent died? You moron. I said he was dying. Which he was. If it meant he had died, I would have said "he died on the ice". I guess in your world a clogged throat is an every night occurance.
Drip, go away. For you to say that what happened to Fish had nothing to do with the game is assinine. Big shock there.
He's passed out, on a bench, in full uniform, in front of 18 000 people. Past heart problem's documented, put on the DL because of his condition....but it has nothing to do with the game? Fuck, you are stupid. Whoo.
From now on you are referred to as The Scarecrow. The Drippy Scarecrow. That's our board pig.

Startling thought when they bring up the names of Reggie Lewis and Hank Gathers when they talk about what happened to Jiri. If he's got the same condition as they do, he's got to hang it up. He's got a ring, he's got money and he's got the rest of his life ahead of him. He loves to play the game but with those two cases in sports should make him think long and hard about what he'll do the rest of his life. I'd hate to see another Wings' defenseman have to retire early after a near death experience but the signs are there that this could happen again and perhaps the next time, he won't get up from it. I hope he makes the right choice. He gots a lovely fiance and I imagine he wants to start a family...he needs to be there for his kids. Some athletes don't know when to give it up, I hope the right people tell him how serious this is and it should make his choice very simple.

Good one, Scarecrow.
You've had all day to come up with something and that's the best you could do? A tired old bon mot from the Hap school of lame posting.
Well, I guess one can't expect much from our Scarecrow. ...and I was right. You know it.
Yeesh and here I thought you were a writer. You must be a transcriber.

I'm sorry, RP--but unlike you I actually have a job, and I focus on that all day instead of trying to come up with something that you would consider witty. The Rat Pack wrote: You've had all day to come up with something and that's the best you could do?

Maniac, I never said they both didn't have the same problem.
I said that Lewis' problems were unknown, while everyone and their mom knew The Fish was a walking time-bomb. It's more a question of the Wings culpability for putting a guy in their line-up who was so damaged. There will be a panel about it. Bet on that.
I hope they didn't go Dave Babych on him.
...and didn't Lewis have cocaine in his system?
Crow, we don't expect anything witty from you. We just expect better than what you usually offer up.

I agree that the Wings might be in trouble for putting him out there but it wasn't obvious to me that his problems were known. He had tested OK after the first episode so I really don't think his actual problem was known. The Rat Pack wrote:Maniac, I never said they both didn't have the same problem.

Cocaine was not detected in Reggie's blood but it was alleged that he used cocaine, so that was one of the theories as to the cause of his troubles. I think a former college teammate came forward and said that he and Reggie had used cocaine before.
Reggie's situation was a debacle, mostly caused by him. The Celtics assembled a "dream team" of cardiologists after his first collapse and they found that he had a serious heart problem---I think it was cardiomyopathy like Fischer. I remember reading that one of those doctors simply placed his hand on Reggie's chest and could feel that his heart beat was fucked up. Reggie and his wife didn't like what the dream team came up with so they bolted the hospital in the middle of the night and went to Dr. Gilbert Mudge who eventually diagnosed a benign fainting condition. We all know how that ended.
