Shaun Alexanders emminent breaking of the all time rushing TD's record, that is. Priest Holmes currently holds this title, having hit paydirt 27 times in 2003. Alexander sits on 26 with one game left against the hapless Packers. Odds are he gets it in a meaningless game, as the walrus will want to atone for sitting Shaun last year and leaving him one measly yard short of Tiki Barber's league leading total.

Now, I've got no axe to grind against either Shaun or the 'hags, but let's examine his numbers a bit closer.

He's scored 14 of the 26 against the worst division foes in the NFL, the pathetic NFC West of Arizona, San Fagcisco, and St. Loser, of whom he has the good fortune of playing twice each season.

Toss in another 4 he piled-up against league punching bag Houston, and that makes about 75% of his TD's have come against inferior competition.

He scored 18 TD's in those 7 games alone, while in the other 8 games against legitimate NFL defenses, he could only manage 8 others.

This record, should he achieve it, will be a fraud and should have an * next to it in the record books.

One- it was Curtis MArtin not Barber.

Two- As I recall- Holmes did not go against alot of stellar teams that year. 21 of his 27 TD's came against teams with less than a .500 record. Of the .500 teams or above he faced- he put up 2 against Denver in one game (shut out the other), 0 against B-More, 1 against Green Bay, 3 against Minny and 0 against Cinncinati (who had the worst ranked D that year). The rest were against San Diego (played twice- ranked 27th overall in D that year), Oakland (played twice- ranked 25th in D that year), Houston, Cleveland, Detroit & Chicago. He did face Pitt & Buffalo that year and put up 3 each.

Don't make it seem like Priest had this extremly tough schedule with all these powerhouse teams he was facing...

I'm too lazy to do the research, but it'd be interesting to see the overall winning % of each's opponents for the season. I'd wager that KC's schedule was much tougher.

Hey, I finally found a use for Dio! :wink:

I'm no math wiz, but KC's opponents in 2003 won 107 games.

Seattle's opponents in 2005 thus far have won 87 games, including the 3 won by GB, whom they play next. That 87 is greatly inflated due to the Indy match-up which added a healthy 13. Let's be generous and give the hag's opponents another 7 wins this year (unlikely) for a total of 94.

Conclusion: Priest's 27 TD's came against much stiffer competition.

Okay- so I did some research... :D
In 2003- the average rank of a rush defense KC played against was 15.69- I can give you a break down of this if you want it.
In 2005- the average rank of a rush defense Seattle played against was 17.

The rush D's do not appear to be that drastically different. Certainly not enough to be considered MUCH stiffer competiton.

Of course you have to take into account the way Alexander's stats are padded by having an actual defense.

I'm guessing Holmes spent a lot more time on the sidelines, watching opponents march down the field aginst his scrublike 'D', whle Shaun is seeing significantly more 3 and outs.

Stupid statement #2. While I'll agree that the NFC is generally a lot weaker than the AFC, much like the Eagles of last year, the Seahawks are a legit team and have shown to easily be one of the top 3 teams in the NFL.

Wags, you are a giant douche. I cant believe I wasted my time opening up this thread. I think Holmes is a tremendous back and an even better person but lets not forget that holmes played behing argueably the best O-Line in football. Those were some pretty big holes they were opening up. Give Alexander his due. 28-30 TDs is damn good.
