Michigan/Nebraska - Get Yer Shots In

Post by At Large »

My computer is broke so I won't be able to do any comments on the game once I leave work (It'll be fixed tomorrow).

Here's how I see it. Michigan is older and more experienced and more talented. NU is a lot younger, but have some nice talent at certain positions.

MU's line has injuries as does NU's linebackers.

NU's D line also leads the nation in sacks (no matter what Gary Danielson might have led you to belive last night in the Rutgers game by proclaiming Rutgers the nation's sack leaders). If NU can get pressure on Michigan's QB at a decent level, I think it can be a close game. If not, NU is toast, it's that simple. NU simply hasn't shown that they can score for the entire game all season long. With that said, NU has played Texas Tech and Oklahoma close this season and could do the same thing in this game.

Also, NU enjoys a 5-1 fan advantage in the Alamo Bowl (from reports I've been seeing from fans that are there). It should be like a home game for NU.

I'm thinking it's close.

My head says, Michigan 27, NU 20

My heart says, NU 27, Michigan 20

Question for the Husker fans: Is there a sense that Callahan is on the verge of a breakthrough next year or the year after, or is the consensus that he's not going to get it done?

Well I'm not a Husker fan, but I'll answer anyway.

At this point I don't think there is a consensus opinion one way or the other. A win over a 7-4 Michigan team tonight would be a step in the right direction, but I'd hardly call it "the beginning of an era." Heading into the CU game, I'd say that the consensus was that he's not going to get it done. But in that game, he actually proved for the first time that he could legitimately out-scheme another coach with comparable or superior talent.

Like I said, a win tonight would be another good sign, but 8-4 is still way below Husker fan's expectations. It would at least earn him a temporary reprieve, though. I think next season will really make or break him. 10 or more wins, and Husker fan is back on the wagon. 9 wins earns him another reprieve. Anything less than 9 wins and http://www.firebeaubridges.com will be in full effect.

On a side note, has Nebraska's O-line ever seen a blitz before?

Why is it that UM and controversial officiating seem joined at the hip?

i dislike Callahan, but i will give it to this Husker team insofar as they have not quit all year (except maybe the KU game, which i did not see....and the Mizzou game which I put at the feet of a crappy D gameplan by Cosgrove). they bring their sack lunch and play 4 quarters.

Husker radio guy is a tool, though. every guy for the BIG RED is an "all-american" or "top-rated" (in what?). talk about Pravda.

Perhaps this game will help them understand that a team needs to be able to initiate a review. UM has had to burn 2 TOs in order to "suggest" a review. This is a flawed system, folks...and there are simple fixes.

RACK Callahan for squibbing the kick. If only Paterno had done the same.

IMO, UM has no peer in two areas...returns, and the two minute drill. I am 100% certain that UM will score a TD on this drive.

wow. in ann arbor, they call pass interference there. In fact, it appears it was PI.

BAD night for the zebras here. Not too sure why it has to be so bad - but again, perhaps national attention here will have a positive result.

Don't know, didn't see. I think Lloyd carried the ball three separate times on that last play. Maybe he passed out.

Sun Belt? You have to be kidding me. No wonder the game was so horribly officiated. A game of this stature and they assign officials from the lowest rung of D1-A football?

Well...it was a scrub bowl, really. However, perhaps the attention will raise a few eyebrows about the state of officiating in the NCAA.

Husker radio guy is comparing this team and Callahan to a 6-4 team under Bob Devaney and a national championship the next year.

1970, i think. 1971 NC.

heard it here first.

Prolly 'cuz there were UM coaches on the field too. 'Twasn't just NU. I also don't believe that was pass interference on the 4th and 8 for UofM. Manningham was naturallly turning back for the ball... just so happened that the NU defender's hand was onor near his arm.

Scrub Bowl? Short memory on Penn State's rescent history? Two short years ago Penn St. woulda crap their draws to be in a scrub bowl game.
And who was that team that kept PSU from a shot at the Rose Bowl?
That scrub team NU beat?

Good eye Ken, on both calls, an assistant coach was 2-3 yards in bounds running at least 10-15 yards down field showing the last dude the direction to the endzone.

I thought the same thing until I saw a sportscenter replay and I saw Michigan players on the field as well so at worse it would have been offsetting penalities. Still it was a great finish and even though I wasl pulling for Nebraska the whole game, that last play had me hoping to see a miracle finish.

NU was 6-4 in 67-68. In 1969 they went 9-2 beating Georgia in the Sun Bowl.
The following season they won the NC in 70 then again in 71.
I think he was trying to compare this team to 1969.
P.S. (breaking news  ) we ain't gonna win the NC next year.....at least I don't expect it.
Be nice however. :D

I feel bad for CU and their 10 or 11 faithful fans that actually care about the program.

Kinda reminds me of the way Texas played under Akers in 84. Good start won some good games then complete impolsion.

I'm glad to see the buffs pull the plug on Barnett, who was a half step above Neweasel.

Lets hope Hawkins can bring some pride back to the Buffs.
