ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Raiders placed Charles Woodson on injured reserve Thursday, ending the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback's season and possibly signaling the end of his career in Oakland.

Woodson has not played since breaking his right leg in an Oct. 23 win over Buffalo. Though the team and coach Norv Turner hoped Woodson would be able to return this season, the former Heisman Trophy winner has been slow to recover and only recently began jogging.

As Oakland's franchise player, Woodson is earning more than $10 million this season. That number would jump to nearly $13 million in 2006 if the Raiders were to keep the franchise tag on Woodson, something owner Al Davis might be hesitant to do with so many other problems plaguing his team.

The Raiders (4-11) will miss the playoffs for a third straight season and are enduring a third consecutive losing season for the first time since Davis joined the franchise in 1963.

Woodson has been at the team's facility and was working out in the weight room Tuesday. Two days later, the Raiders placed him on IR, prematurely ending his season for a second straight year. Woodson was inactive for the final three games of 2004 with a hip injury.

Tight end James Adkisson was elevated from Oakland's practice squad to take Woodson's roster spot.




I'd welcome him back next year...If he moves to safety. Otherwise goodbye CWood you followed up an outstanding 2000 season with 5 lackluster ones.

I don't see it happening.

I think he (and his agent) are going to look to get paid.

Injury-prone, he's not worth near what he got this year.
Hell, even healthy all year he wouldn't have been near worth it.

The 'duds got hosed on the Woodson deal this year, and Al has nobody to blame but himself.


I could not disagree more on the 'lackluster' statement, however.

Taking money completely out of the equation, CWood can play on my team ANY day of the week.

He could be the far and away best CB in football. I just dont see the effort there. IMO hes always been the make the big play instead of the right play guy. In 2000 he was dominant. He shutdown pretty much everyone he faced. Since then he just hasnt been the same player. Be it injury or whatever he wasn't the same Woodson.

And I agree the Postons are going to try to bleed some team out of alot of green for CWood.

Heres my view on this situation as of right now.


CWood's days as a corner are over. Yes, he did a good job while he manned the position, but fell short of what Raiderfan had envisioned when he kicked a ton of ass in his rookie year and in college.

If he wants to remain a corner instead of making the switch to an area we desperately need help in (safety), then its time to cut him loose and let him go.

The youngins got the chance to sink or swim in his spot, and in my opinion have done an outstanding job manning that island. No reason to think they couldnt do the same next year.

I wouldn't mind seeing Chuck screw Al over and play safety for the Boys. That would be an incredible defensive backfield and free safety is our major weakness on defense.

I thought Woodson's career in Oakland was pretty much considered over and done the day he stubbed his widdle toe. Has the dude even had a decent game since then?
