Millen speaks/Lions' coach search

Post by Shoalzie »

http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article? ... 048/SPORTS

Millen finally reacts to all of the heat he's taking. He says he understands how we feel but does really understand? He's said enough about how he's upset...the only way he can save his ass right now is hiring a great coach. It seems pretty obvious that he's not getting fired this year.

http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article? ... 049/SPORTS

Jauron isn't being out and out let go but he's not getting the job without going through the interview process. A few intriguing names mentioned but no surprises...Maurice Carthon, Russ Grimm, Ron Rivera, Al Saunders, Mike Singletary, Jim Haslett, Kirk Ferentz and Jauron.

Parcells name is brought up in the article but he's on the verge of retirement. I can't imagine he'd leave Dallas for Detroit anyways regardless of his future in coaching. If he was 10 years younger, he'd be the dream candidate but he's impossible to read on what he's going to do next.

Rack that site!

Millen must give daily blow jobs to WC Ford in order to keep that job. He is the most inept GM in the league and was a shitty commentator when he was working games for Fox. Still can't figure out why the Lions would hire a guy from the TV booth that had NEVER worked on the management side of an NFL team.

Oh, that's right, the Lions want to be the last of the pre-1960 NFL teams that hasn't made the Super Bowl once. (Cards are the other team)

Matt Millen SUCKS

When he was at FOX he tried to be Madden and sounded like a jackass. He couldn't contain himself from routing against the Redskins, which stemmed from their decision to leave him off the preseason roster in 1991, and he was always Mr. Know It All in the booth. I'm glad the Lions gave him that job just to expose what a fool he is.
One horrible coaching hire/draft pick after another, that piece of shit is running the Lions franchise into the ground. Nice legacy, Millen. The guy is a joke.

The Cards just need to get over the injury bug.

Exactly what is the reasoning behind giving Millen one more chance or year?

If he fucks up the coaching hire again (very probable) then a new GM is going to want his own coach. I guess Ford doesn't mind paying 3 guys HCing salaries at the same time.

Forget any FA signings though.......

Nobody in Detroit wants Haslett, so of course...he'll probably be the guy the Lions sign. He overachieved, at best, with the Saints, and was mediocre or god awful the rest of the time. I'm tired of guys bouncing around the NFL who aren't getting it done, but maintain jobs just because they have head coaching "experience". Isn't the "experience" overrated if you can't win football games? I want to see a fresh face come in.

John Clayton believes Russ Grimm is the favorite to get the Lions job. Take that for what it's worth...

He's Millen's buddy from Washington. What perfect name for a Lions' coach...Grimm.

No matter who he hires, the pressure will stay on Millen. He's been the constant during this dark age of Lions football.

So where are the linemen to block for these guys. The only decent lineman Millen has signed has been Damien Woody.

OK. He's got his center in place. All he needs now is two guards and two tackles. You don't need first round picks to get solid O lineman.

There's nothing wrong with Millen that better scouting can't fix and scouts are cheaper than new GMs.
Woody is a guard. And the Pats drafted him in the first round.

Nobody is doubting that there are good linemen to be found in the later rounds. But there are also some good skill position guys (Tom Brady, Terrel Davis, Rod Smith) to be found in later rounds. A team that invests so heavily up front in nothing but skill position guys is signaling that their priorities are fucked up.

How's this. For the last 4 years, the Lions have drafted THREE offensive linemen total, none of whom have been picked earlier than the 6th round.

Millen should be fired for that fact alone.

After seeing your fantasy football team you drafted, it is no reason why you side with Millen and his draft strategies. You both suck, and spare us the "I won my league with Brett Favre and Ahman Green" bullshit. Your judgement sucked then and now it sucks even more. Just quit posting in this forum. Please.

I'm just not understanding your skepticism here. At #9, the Lions probably won't even have to trade up to get Santonio Holmes. He should fall right into their laps and then it's smooth sailing into the playoffs.
Why? Is he going to gain 130 LBS and play left tackle?

When your team winds up at the cellar of the standings every year, you're going to have the luxury of drafting high. Don't see how that is a selling point for Millen.

Oh yeah, that's right. Well, I'm sure he'll make a fine head coach for Lions. Nobody gets more out of his players than Jim Haslett...except for maybe everyone else.

Not making a case for Haslett, just pointing out the Chiefs way of thinking when it comes to hiring coaches. And pointing out your error.. :D

I could stomach them picking Rogers one year and Roy Williams the next year but the Mike Williams pick this year was flat out stupid when you consider they passed on Shawn Merriman. Rogers is likely to be cut loose and Mike was lazy and uninspired during his rookie year. I like Roy Williams potential but he drops too many passes, can't stay healthy and talks a little too much. Throw in the fact no one knows who will be throwing the ball to these guys next year, the future is not bright for the offense.

I would take Singletary. Mean and tough and I think he would get a lot out of his players. Plus he would be another black HC, so maybe ESPN would STFU.

Sorry, but is there some expectation here that the Lions won't suck regardless of the coach/GM?

Marinelli and Haslett are back for second interviews and Grimm sounds like he's still a candidate but he can't talk with the team again until next week.

If the Steelers beat Denver, Grimm is off limits until 2/5.

Marinelli close to a deal with the Lions...
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2297266

If he brings Monte Kiffin with him, I'm all for it...plus find an offensive wizard that knows how to handle QBs if Millen wants to keep Harrington.

I dont know why Monte would leave to become his old assistant's assistant. If he does, then the Bucs are fucked. Can u say 4-12.

I know...wishful thinking. Marinelli will probably together another steamer of a coaching staff and we'll finish 5-11 and 6-10 for the next three years until he gets pushed out the door.
