My Rose Bowl experience with Pictures

Post by Left Seater »

We just got back from our 8 days in Southern California. We flew into SD and spend a few days at the zoo, beach, mexico etc. Then on Tuesday we drove up to LA and checked into a Hollywood hotel. We did all the tourist crap in LA and oh, yeah, went to the Rose Bowl on Wednesday.

Below is a quick recount of Wednesday for us and then some general thoughts on the rest of the week.

We wake up and drop into the downstairs eatery we are the only two not wearing burnt orange. We must flash 30 hook em horns before finishing breakfast. After breakfast we head up to Mulhollend Drive to take in the sites of the city. We then drive down to Beverly Hills and walk around Rodeo Drive. Nothing special there except for the number of horns out walking around. After about an hour of this I am totally bored and we head back to the hotel.

I grab a quick bite at the Hollywood Highlands complex while the wife showers and gets ready. At 12:15 we head to the metro station as the hotel has advised us not to drive to the game due to lack of parking due to the recent rain. We meet some friends at the station and jump on the metro with about 50 Horn fans. We have to change trains at Metro and encounter our first stupid LA thing. The Metro officials are not allowing USC and Texas fans on the same train car. We are shocked and inform the guy we were unaware that Texas Tech fan was in attendance. He wasn't amused.

We get to Pasadena after about an hour total trip. After exiting the metro we walk the three blocks to the free shuttle to the Rose Bowl. We see the line and walk another three blocks to get to the end of the line. Some one informs us that the wait is estimated to be 2 hours. Our group decides to screw the line and we walk the 2.5 miles to the Rose Bowl. Once there we attend the ESPN tailgate party and listen to Big and Rich. Then just before 2 we head over to the Texas Exes Party and I snap this pic on the way.

Image

Our friends are Texas Alumns and they get us into the great party the Exes association threw before the game. Then about 3:50 we decide we will head to our seats. We go thru security and enter the stadium. This was done pretty quickly and we then go looking for a bathroom. This was not done easily. First knock against the Stadium, too few urinals.

Relieved, we head into our seats and I snap these pics:

Image

We had seats in the 12th row right behind the ESPN set. We watch that and then my wife snaps a pic of Lance:

Image

Finally the pregame started and the ESPN set was lowered out of the way for our first view of the field:

Image

You guys saw the game, so I will leave that out of this, I did take a few action shots including this one of the missed PAT:

Image

After the game I got these pics:

I like this one of ESPN kicking the Texas OL off of the set:

After the game we were going to ride back to the hotel with another group of friends who had space on their bus. Two hours later and still not out of Pasadena a big group of us got off the bus and walked back to the Metro. We finally got back to the hotel around 1:30.

All I can say is that it was an amazing game and a great trip. We had a blast. Props to Texas and their fans who all acted with class all week. Props also to them for the numbers they brought to SoCal. They were freaking everywhere. Props too to the SC fans who were nothing but class. The locals on the other hand were somewhat jerks. I don't blame SC for them, but there was a certain thug nature to a lot of the comments around town during the week.

Horrible marks to the Rose Bowl stadium. The tunnels are too small and there are only about 100 too few of them. There are far too few urinals, not to mention toilets for ladies. Also, horrible marks for LA as a whole on their infrastructure. By far the worst stadium and transportation of any of the large bowls. The Big 10 and Pac 10 can have that game. I wouldn't want to go back to that stadium unless it was again for the title game. Here's hoping an earthquake takes it down and leaves the rest of LA untouched.

Give me SD over LA anyday.

Texas WRs block downfield better than any I have seen.

Props again Texas and SC fan. And a special props to Harv who I have had the pleasure of meeting in person. Congrats man.

When I heard people weren't going to be allowed to park on the golf course I was happy I wasn't anywhere near that place. What a mess it must have been. Lefty, you're right about that place. It's old and the tunnels are way too narrow. It's a mess getting in and out of the stadium. Glad you had a good time. Rack the pics and the experience. You should have PM'd me, maybe we could have hooked up for a drink or two.......

Glad you had a great time Lefty!

I have parked at the 134/210 interchange for UCLA games (Parsons buidling) and walked the 2 miles back to my car instead of waiting 2 hours for a bus. You think the infrastructure at the Rose Bowl is bad, the Coliseum is far worse.

Rack the trip and the post, Lefty.

And rack your wife for putting up with it. My guess is that it's not her cup of tea. I think I would've been on my own in that situation.

She's an Aggie. Lefty's love and passion for CFB is accepted in his house by all. ;)

Rack the trip, Lefty. If A&M can make it to the title game before I'm 6 feet under, I'll definitely make the same kind of trip.

Thanks for sharing L. What a memorable trip that must have been. Your next "go see it goal" should be the Indy 500.
what I was particuarly impressed by was how you were able to post those pics complete with captions and seperate narrations. You must have attended UBB code school or something.

Radio Fan, like most "Texas" girls my wife was wearing heals. Granted they were not super high, but they were still heals. She was fine for the walk over, but post game her feet were starting to kill her. The really funny part was that the benches we had to sit on were made of three pieces of wood, with just enough space for her heel to slide thru. And since we had to stand for 95% of the time we were in the stadium it was pretty funny. By the third quarter she had taped a bunch of napkins over the bench and had removed her shoes. But of course she wouldn't step off of the napkins until her shoes were back on which made for a funny site watching her try to balance.

LAX, I thought about dropping you and Meds a PM, but since we were guests on the trip the wife said no way I could skip out and go hit a bar. Figured it would be too hard to try to let you know where we were going to be each night and at what time.

Trev, We stayed at the Renaissance Hotel on Highland and Hollywood BLVD. Very nice hotel, location was pretty central, but would stay down by the beach next time.

Terry, my wife is a huge college football fan herself. She goes to games on her own when I am officiating and she goes to a good deal of my games too. As long as it is college football, college baseball, or men's basketball she will pay attention.

Indy, when A&M is playing for the title I am sure we will be going to the game also. That will be an epic trip no doubt.

Nolesy, that is on my list at some point, but I think that is going to be a "guys" trip as the wife has no intrest.

Lefty, I am sure you have heard but:

Applewhite named offensive coordinator at Rice

How did Sims ever gleane playing time with stats like these:
Applewhite finished his career as UT's all-time leader in passing yards (8,353), passing touchdowns (60), passing attempts (1,065), and total offense (8,059). Texas went 22-8 with Applewhite as the starter and won four straight bowl games while Applewhite was there.

Hadn't heard that yet, but thanks for the update.

As for Major, he was the man at Texas, but that bio is incorrect. Texas lost in a Cotton Bowl to Arkansas while Major was there and that was one of the reasons Chrissy got on the field. No one was sure how Major's knees would hold up and Chrissy got the starts early because of it. Major still came in and cleaned up Chrissy's shit, and won the Holiday Bowl and almost brought them back to overcome Chrissy's 4 turnovers in the 1st Quarter against CU in the title game.

Hey sky, I'm not sure those Applewhite numbers were correct. I know for a fact that we lost two bowl games while he was at Texas. Texas lost the Cotton Bowl to Arkansas, that was the game he tore his ACL and Simms had to finish the game. We also lot to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. His senior year we came back and won the Holiday bowl against Washington. As far as I know Texas was 2-2 in bowls while Applewhite was there.

What's with dissing one of the holy grounds of CFB? In order for a place to hold so much history, it has to be old. When the Rose Bowl was built, in 1922, it was a 57,000 seat horseshoe shape. Also like many older stadiums it has been added to throughout the years until it reached it's current 96,000 seat capacity.

Personally I don't give a crap about tunnel width or urinal counts, I'll leave that up to you "true" CFB buffs. :meds: What's important to me is the history. When you walk down the hill to the stadium and you come upon the entrance and see that famous logo as in lefty's first pic...that is what CFB is all about. Think of all the greats who have played or coached on this very field! Think of all the great plays and games that have unfolded right here. I've been to 2 Rose Bowls and the sight of the stadium gave me chills. I think it's one of those things that cannot be understood until you experience it yourself, with your team playing in the "grandaddy of them all". So I guess I can understand why it's hard for Screw-Mich to wrap his head around.

Yes, it is old and historical. But as you pointed out the stadium itself has changed over time and as such why can't it be updated now? Having been there yourself, you know there is plenty of room for extra restrooms. Going to take a leak during a game shouldn't cause you to miss a whole quarter.

They could also very easily add steps that allow people to enter at the top of the stadium. Since the stadium sits inside a bowl they would only have to go up a few stories.

Just because something is old doesn't mean it can't be updated.

a) I never piss while the game is on. Pre-game leak, rarely a halftime leak, most certainly a post-game leak. Sure my kidneys are probably damaged but I can't justify missing game action.

b)I leave myself plenty of time to get into the stadium before kickoff. If people fuck around and wait until the last couple minutes, thats their problem. The tunnels have sufficed for this long, I don't see what the big deal is.

c) not all stadium "updates" improve the appeal. I give you soldier field. I guess I'm a traditionalist. Get there on time, piss before you go to your seat, and ejoy one of the greatest venues in all of sports.

Fenway is historic, so is Wrigley, but they still suck to watch a game in. Updating a stadium doesn't take away from the history, it just makes for a better fan experience.

Since this topic is moving in that direction, where is the best place to watch a sporting event.

In Basketball I would vote for SBC center, American Airlines Arena or Canseco Fieldhouse.

I have no idea in baseball because i've only been to a few Ranger games and no where else.

Pro football I would guess Georgia dome or Houston's new stadium.

College football, for the stadium I've been to a few good ones, Death Valley (Clemson), College Station, Cotton bowl, DKR Texas Memorial, Alamo Dome, BYU stadium. I would probably rank Kyle field the best, too bad it is filled with all those aggies. :D

I don't know how you can put the Cotton bowl on a best stadium list. I agree that when Texas and OU play there it is an amazing atmosphere, but the stadium itself sucks! If you are over 4' 10" you will have no circulation in your legs after about three minutes due to the cramped quarters.

My point in all of this was the atmosphere and game were great, the stadium and infrastructure leave much to be desired.

I didn't mean to infer the Cotton bowl was a good stadium its just one of the few I've been to. I forgot I've also been to Baylor's stadium and SMU's old stadium.

I know of atlease one high school in Dallas that has a better stadium than the Cotton bowl...Coppel High has the nicest non college non NFL stadium I have ever seen. I would rank coppell's stadium better than the Cotton bowl.

BTW the most beautiful stadium is BYU stadium because of the Wasatch mountains behind them. The drive in and out of the stadium on game day sucks because there is only one major highway between Provo and SLC.

Vito,

For me it's all about the history and feel of a stadium.

CFB- UM, ND, The Shoe, Happy Valley, LSU, Bama, Georgia, Death Valley
The Swamp, places with deep history or cool names.
CBB-Cameron would be special, and any schools still playing in the old "field houses".

Baseball- The number is dwidling as most teams build newfangled stadiums...although some of the retro ones are sweet. I also try to steer away from corporate named joints. Yankee Stadium, Fenway, Wrigley, I think most of the rest are newer and/or corporate. I might like Camden or the Jake.

NFL- Where is the tradition here? Lambeau, sure. The bastardized Soldier Field, maybe, but the rest are new school. I know some are great, I've been to Ford Field a few times and it kicks the Silverdome's ass.

Hoops. Same as NFL. They had to sell out and build new arena's full of suites to rake in revenue so thugs can make 15 mil per year and bitch about it. Gone are Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium, and the original MSG. I don't think there's a must see arena in the league.
