OT: Can Texas pull the Trifecta?

Post by Vito Corleone »

Texas is the defending Baseball champs
Texas just won the MNC in Football

Texas just moved up to #5 #6 in basketball polls

Is it possible that they can pull the trifecta and win it all in March?

Wow this could be a year to remember.

The only thing that was more overrated than Texas football before 2005, was, and still is, Texas basketball.

Gotta give Texas credit though. They probably do have the best basketball/football tandem going right now. West Virginia, Ohio St, Louisville, Wisconsin, Florida, Oklahoma...all are up there too, but still pretty distant 2nds.

The fact that they finally won another national title hasn't set in yet. I don't think it will until they get their asses kicked twice in the first six games next season.

yes and that is why I haven't talked about this til now. Texas started out the year playing pretty awful, now they are playing pretty damn good. Did you see the Villanova or Memphis games. Right now Texas is playing as good as anyone in the country. Tucker Aldridge and Gibson might be the best trio in college basketball, and now they are playing like it.

It is a long shot but not as long as some of you might think.

I think that I heard the same argument last year too. The only difference was we weren't coming off a national championship. We are breaking in a new QB but are solid every where else. We still have good receivers, good o-line, good d-line, lb's, great secondary, and a solid group of skill players.

I guess being overrated helped us land Kevin Durant, the nations #2 recruit behind Lawson...and we pulled the guy outa ACC country.

Um, you do know that in the last five years, playing in the same conference as Texas, OU has (in basketball) won a conference regular season title and three conference tourney titles while going 7-5 vs. Texas and (in football) won two conference titles while going 4-1 vs. Texas?

Unless you just mean this year, I can't see how you'd say OU was a pretty distant second in the football/basketball comparison.
I guess I was a little too vague when I used the words, "right now". I'll try and be more direct next time.

Right at this moment, for what it's worth (very little I know) it appears as though Texas has the best tandem going. The football team has just come off a title win, and the basketball team is hovering around the top 5.

You're correct based on previous seasons. Prior to 05, I'd say OU was the more impressive tandem.

It's be mighty deece of your guys if they followed Baylor and Tech's ways of defending the kid when he's beyond the 3 point stripe. That would be totally dope.

Just a few of years ago Texas was in the Final Four. When was the last time the Sooners made the final four.

Since 2k I would give Texas the edge over OU. in booth football and basketball combined.

The year right before that, dumbass. OU was also in the elite eight the year you were in the final four and lost to the same team you did.

Since 2k OU has a winning record over Texas in both sports.

I don't think you understand what "better" means.
You might be right about 2k since I dont' have the numbers in front of me. as of 2k1 Texas/OU is tied 4-4, if you count from 2k2 Texas is 4-2 vs OU. with two to play this year. I predict that we will likely split or Texas will sweep.

The two Texas losses certainly were ugly this season in basketball. I would have liked to see those games if they were completely healthy. Texas led Duke in the second half and when their big guy went down Duke pulled away by dominating the inside.

Michigan's basketball and football titles were 8 years (actually 9 academic years) apart, btw.

i just read at OUInsider that Kelvin Sampson is 17-8 against Texas and 11-7 against Barnes. so, that supports Vito's rock solid claim that UT is well ahead of OU in hoops.

that and Mack being 2-5 against Bob Stoops.

the evidence is indisputable. Vito=our winner!

I want ND to do well in all sports, but I'd be lying if I said I followed any sports other than football and men's basketball in anything other than the most casual of manner.

I started following sports in the early 1970's. When I was a kid, ND at least arguably had the best combined football and men's basketball programs in the country. If we can get back to that point, I'd be ecstatic.

Texas wil dominate the hard wood just like the grid iron. OU glory days are over. Sampson is just like Stoops except he's black and has never won shit. OU ain't even the best hoops squad in their own state. Texas works them so they can be less disappointed when Augie fucks em on the diamond. OU can't even come close to matching Texas in anything.

Longhorns let the good times roll

By Berry Tramel
The Oklahoman

NORMAN - Great news, Sooners and Cowboys. The University of Texas has no plans to add wrestling as an intercollegiate sport.
At least there’s something left for us Oklahomans to win.

The Longhorn basketball team hits Lloyd Noble Center tonight on a collision course with a 16-0 Big 12 record. Hope Rick Barnes’ boys don’t expect a parade. Nothing short of a national title is big burnt-orange news these days.

Austin has become Titletown. The Longhorns are reigning champs in football and reigning champs in baseball. Now Barnes’ hoops squad shows signs of doing the same.

North of the Red River, it’s the sum of all fears. Total domination by the Evil Empire.

“I have always hated UT and so does the rest of the Big 12. I basically hate them because they rub it in your face when they beat you, and, well, they are good at everything.”

That’s from a message board - an OSU message board. Common ground in the Bedlam Series: contempt for the Longhorns.

Thank the Lord for Miss Courtney Paris and her Sooner women’s basketball teammates, who sent Texas’ traditional powerhouse home a big loser the other night.

Almost three years ago, I wrote a column saying what a high time it must be for Longhorn fans. That was after Mack Brown managed UT’s first top-10 finish in almost 20 years, to go along with a baseball national title and a swell basketball squad.

Now again the Longhorns rule baseball and play a mean game on the hardwood, plus Brown has scaled Mount Stoops and slain USC.

It might get worse before it gets better. Texas also is defending NCAA champion in women’s track, and softball ace Cat Osterman is back for another strikeout marathon, and the ’Horns finished second nationally in women’s tennis, and the UT swim teams always are good, and well, the message board was right. Texas is just danged good in everything.

Still, said DeLoss Dodds, “I don’t think it’s been this good before.”

No kidding.

Dodds is the UT athletic director and quite the unassuming fellow. Low key. Quiet. All cattle and no hat.

Oklahoma legend Abe Lemons couldn’t stand Dodds, but every Texas fan from Dalhart to Brownsville should adore their CEO. Dodds is the AD who hired Brown, Barnes, baseball’s Augie Garrido and most every coach in the Longhorn corral.

Dodds lists four reasons for the Texas uprising.

1. In the mid-1980s, UT started a foundation that now generates $20 million a year.

2. The Big 12 formed.

“We were not recruiting Texas kids when we were in the Southwest Conference,” Dodds said. “They were going to UCLA and Florida State. We got into a new conference, gave us a new lease on life.”

3. New facilities, virtually across the board, including an $18 million renovation to Disch-Falk Field, UT’s baseball home.

4. Quality coaches, lured by reasons 1, 2 and 3.

Can Texas win another NCAA title in basketball and sweep the three major men’s sports?

“That would be a dream come true,” Dodds said. “Be almost impossible to think about.”

Barnes coached Texas and T.J. Ford to the 2003 Final Four, where the ’Horns were felled by Carmelo Anthony, who that season burned the Big 12 the way Sherman burned Atlanta. This year, the ’Horns again are talented enough to reach the Final Four, and so far, no Carmelo seems to be hanging out on a college campus.

“Some day, everything’s going to go right, we’re going to win one,” Dodds said. “Hang around at the top, and you’re going to win one. Oklahoma found that out (in football). We did, too.”

And Dodds indeed confirmed that Texas has no plans to roll out a wrestling mat.

“No, huh-uh,” he said. “You can tell Mike (Holder) and Joe (Castiglione), we’re not doing wrestling.”

All of us north of the Red are grateful.
