Madden deserves a Hall pass
Madden deserves a Hall pass
Madden's record
REGULAR SEASON
103-32-7
(.759 percentage,
best of all-time)
INCLUDING PLAYOFFS
112-39-7
(.739 percentage, second to
Vince Lombardi)
He is arguably the most popular figure in the history of professional football, an announcer who by next season will have worked for every major television network... the name behind a video game that has sold more than 45 million copies, the co-author of four books that reached the best-seller lists.
But before any of that occurred, John Madden was a coach, one of the best ever... It was so long ago that many people might not even remember it, but the Pro Football Hall of Fame will have a chance to correct that oversight Saturday when its 39-man board of selectors chooses its next class of enshrinees.
In 10 years as the Raiders' coach... he won a Super Bowl, took his team to the conference championship game seven times, compiled the second-best winning percentage (behind Vince Lombardi) in NFL history and had a winning record against each of the 10 Hall of Fame coaches with whom he competed.
It's somewhat a mystery why Big John wasn't voted to the Hall of Fame a fuckin' time long ago, but he had to overcome the perception he would coach again after retiring at age 42...
Retired at 42... Unreal!
The Raiders' decade under Madden... came during one of the NFL's strongest periods. During those years, the opposing coaches included Chuck Noll, Don Shula and Hank Stram, etc. All of whom are in the Hall of Fame. It was, perhaps, the golden age of NFL coaching, and Madden beat every one of them more than they beat him.
Bottom line...
Madden's induction is long overdue!!!

Madden belongs in the Hall like War Wagon belongs in an English 101 class. Dude's been arguably the single biggest pioneer of the sport over the past 3 decades as a Super Bowl winning coach, a color commentator, an icon to XBox geeks and as a general personality. Rack him.

Jake is out. Jay is in. Finally.

Madden's negatives are his short tenure, and the fact that he was only slightly over .500 in post-season play.
The teams that Madden coached in Oakland were quite talented, and we never got to see what he could with a team that was somewhat short on talent.
Look, what if George Siefert had retired after his 8-year 49er run in which he went 99-30 and won a pair of Super Bowls....?
Would he be a Hall of Fame coach...?
We saw him struggle in Carolina for 3 years.
If Madden had stayed for a few more years we might have seen the same with him, who knows.

I can't disagree with that. Certainly it is safe to conclude that he's done with coaching. And he's, for better or worse, the biggest name in football broacasting.Donkey Punch wrote:His total impact on the game, both as a coach and as an analyst should get him in. His video game isn't bad either. Unwar the fuggers who know how to cheat online.

Skids... did you read the header to my thread? Does it match the article header by Ira Miller? I think you will find that it does. If I wanted someone to think I wrote it, all I would have to do is change the header and you would've never have known who wrote it.
As usual, you missed the point of the thread, much as you have missed the point of what a life is. The thread was not about me... it was about making a case for John Madden being included in the Hall of Fame, and I must say, your take on the topic was quintessentially you. Thanks for your input. It was well thought out and deliberate.
It's great that you're playing Mr. Mom... and taking on the mommy role, while your wife goes to work as a teacher and brings home the bacon. But, do you really feel that your setting a good example for your kids by posting on a message board from morning till late in the wee hours of the night?
It's time to get a job... Skids. You really have too much time on your hands.
P.S. Poptart... The difference between George Seifert and John Madden is night and day. Seifert already had a base to work with, taking what Walsh had built. Madden took nothing and made something. Madden also had to go up against the great Dolphin and Steeler teams from the 70's with coaches like Noll and Shula. Seifert never had to go up against "Dynastys" and HOF coaches.

Actually, I have two jobs, m2. A tad bit sore, are we? As for time on my hands...as someone pointed out, it's not that it takes long to expose you, anyway. When m2 posts a coherent take, you just pop the first line into google, and...viola...
I understand you're a little burned up about this...just take your lumps and move on.
I expected you to run the "I never pretended it was mine" angle. Let me just point out that it's generally expected that C&P jobs be accompanied by a linked source. When you fail to do so, you've earned the pile on that's coming your way.
