I frankly don't care what people think about Detroit...I'm rooting for a great game. Ford Field is a great venue and it should be a good event for the city. The weather isn't frigid so some fun could be had outside. I didn't hear a ton of gripes about the All-Star Game at Comerica in July. Detroit isn't Chicago or New York City but it isn't the hole in the ground most people like to think of it as.
Dudes....having grown up in Detroit suburbia. It is a shit hole. Having visited every year since. It is a shit hole. I went to a game last year at Comerica. What a fucking demilitarized zone. Walking back to our car we were cornered by a bunch of low-lifes. Then? More lowlife bums out of nowhere. Next? The latest bums were undercover police. Yeah.....that sounds like a safe city to me. Fuck that.
It is a shit hole. Half the buildings are boarded up and should be imploded. I guess when you have a thug running the city........

If you don't go into places you don't have to go, it's not all that bad. Downtown is pretty nice. The only reason I go to the eastside of the state is to see a game. I don't go clubbing or go to the casinos. Detroit isn't spotless but tell me which city is spotless? I'm a glass half-full guy...this city helped birth the auto industry and it was huge for the development of R&B and soul music. I hate living the westside of the state and hearing the honks to the north say that Grand Rapids is the best city in the state. It's nice but metro Detroit is still the most important region in the state and I hope it can continue to improve after hosting a couple of major events. I can't turn a blind eye to it's past but I'm sure it'll get better eventually.

It's just a very bad idea.
No surprise the NFL would take to it.
Follow the money trail.
Atlanta had an ice storm...no one can control the weather. It's been mild in the area for several weeks now. It's not like Detroit is buried by two feet of snow. It's chilly outside but go out and buy a coat and gloves, sissy. Unless you spent money on a ticket and you're actually in the area for the event, why are you complaining? You'll be watching the game in the comfort of your home or a bar...how does the weather of Detroit affect your enjoyment of the game? They're playing indoors, by the way...
The Super Bowl is much more than just the game.
There is NO reason to set up shop in a city that you know will most likely be very cold, and also very possibly could have freezing precipitation.
It's the height of stupidity.
You like your city, and want to take up for it.
We get that, Shoalz.
I'm not here to knock Detroit.
I'm here to knock the decision to have the Super Bowl EVENT in a cold weather city.
Think objectively.

I know you can't go out and party like on South Beach in Miami or Bourbon Street in New Orleans (at least, not for a while). There's plenty to do inside. It's not like they can't have parties and galas and all that crap inside. One year putting the game in cold weather isn't going to hurt anyone. When we look back at Super Bowl XL, I think more people will think about the game and not the fact that it was 30 degrees everyday. People find every little thing to nitpick about. Tickets cost an arm and a leg that the regular fan like you and me can't go. The week leading up to the game is for the high-rollers and richy riches to have a good time while the average fan is no where to be scene. Detroit is one of the best sports cities in the country...you can pick a worse sports city to host an event like this.

How shocking that a Houstonian would object to a Super Bowl being played in a cold weather city. If it were me, I'd take it one step further and have the game played outdoors. Are you telling me that a Super Bowl at Lambeau Field wouldn't be a sellout?poptart wrote:The Super Bowl is much more than just the game. Football is a game meant to be played in all forms of weather. It only stands to reason that if teams like the Texans, Dolphins, Chargers, Saints and Falcons are given the opportunity to play Super Bowls at their home stadiums, that the Patriots, Jets and Bills should as well.
PS: Mgo, you would be amazed at how quickly a town cleans up when they know the world will be watching. Rochester never looked so good as it did when we hosted the Ryder Cup back in 95.

Detroit will make out just fine. It has been a hit already. Take it from someone whose local news is splattered with this nonsense 24/7 leading up to the big game. Most people would rather be outside enjoying nice weather, but if they can't, that won't stop them from having a good time. This thing being in Detriot won't stop any of the famous celebs or CEO types from hosting their routine parties. Face it, 15 degrees or 80, the SB is one of the biggest events of they year - people with dollars will show up at Fraggle Rock to be a part of it.poptart wrote:No, I don't.UCant Unretires Again wrote:So.. when the Jets get that retractable roof stadium built in downtown Manhattan... do you really think the NFL will shy away from this cold weather city?

So what's yer freakin point? That celebrities and CEOs shouldn't have to step out of limos into cold air? WTF? So the Super Bowl gets held in a cold weather city every 10 years or so. Tell me, why doesn't it belong in a cold weather place?poptart wrote:Of course a SB played at Lambeau would be a sellout, Bri.

BTW: I'm not sure if you know, but life up north doesn't stop for snow. Unlike southern cities, up north we have snowplows and rock salt. I'm sure if there is a blizzard in Detroit that life will go on. I've seen places get socked with up to 2 feet of snow and be up and running the next day.

But as a CITY(which is what this is all about)....its a shit hole.WolverineSteve wrote:Sandwiched between the MLB all-star game and the Final Four, the Super Bowl will be a success for Motown. You fucking pussy. Football is an all weather game. Sack up. Like I told you before, any city that has blizzards knows how to deal with them. It's the pussy southern cities that give blizzards a bad name by shutting down when there is 3 inches of snow.poptart wrote:Bri, there's just no good reason to hold Super Bowl week in a freezer when there are SO many warm weather cities available.
Further, what if there WAS a blizzard in the days leading up to the game....?
Why needlessly open yourself up to that possibility...?
It's just senseless.

Rex you fucking idiot,
Over 1 million fans have turned out for the Wings and Pistons championship parades in downtown Detroit. The Tigers and Lions are long suffering, yet are steeped in tradition.
Since you're too lazy to read the article...
The Lions have sold every seat for every game in Ford Fields 4 years.
The Piston's have sold out 107 straight games.
The Wings have sold out 339 straight games.
MSU hoops  have sold out 120 straight games.
UM football has played before over 100,000 fans in each of the last 193 games.
This is an epic sports town!! Don't let the facts get in the way, I'm sure the rich history of Florida professional sports can compete with Motown's. Why I can remember as a kid when Florida's pro sports roster included......the Dolphins and....oh shit that's it. So Rexie come lately and his expansion sportstown in Florida can B-L-O-W me. Talk to me when Lighteningfan outnumbers Wings fans when they play in St. Pete. Talk to me when they open the upper bowl at Magic games. Talk to me when I can no longer scalp a ticket for 20 bucks at a Bucs game. Talk to me when every fan at the Devil Rays game doesn't get a foul ball. This was a thread for mature sports towns junior nobody from Florida need reply.
edit to add more support to my claims.

Lighten up, 'tart. It's just a game.
I hate sigs. But I lost a stupid fucking bet because a KC Paul lookalike and his sorry ass team were inferior to the greatness that is the Pittsburg Steelers.
I have no problems with it being in Detroit to showcase the new stadium and all.
That said, Detroit is fucking shithole and anyone taking up for it has obviously never been anywhere else. It's got character, I'll give it that, but it's a heaping pile of dung.
I've been to every major city in the country with the exception of San Fran, Portland and Seattle and Detroit is #1 on my list of places that I would never want to go to again. I'd rather go to Newark.

Magic? Dude that city is 90 miles from us. And how are Lansing and Ann Arbor part of Detroit? Do they know you annexed them?
Obviously, you are a fucking tard that just can't handle the truth. Detroit is an absolute shit hole....a giant slum. So, STFU. Hell, TB has actually won a SB since they started having SBs. Lions? Uhhhh.......I can't remember any important Lions since SB I playing in any BIG GAMES.
PS Wingfan DOES NOT outnumber Lightningfan(maybe ten years ago but not recently). You are a bitter fuck. That's all. Bundle up and carry on with your crying. Thanks.

I didn't think it was possible to trump "Detroit is not a shithole," but you done outdone it. The only hockey "fans" in Florida are displaced Ranger fans biding their time until Yankees pitchers and catchers report. No one - and I mean NO one - gives a shit about the Lightning when they hit the road. The Wings are the Steelers of the NHL; their fans represent everywhere they go.T REX wrote: PS Wingfan DOES NOT outnumber Lightningfan(maybe ten years ago but not recently).

I was at the game in St. Pete. The Wingsfans outnumbered the Lighteningfans. It was all over the sports talk shows how embarrassed they were that the lower-bowl was all red.
The fact that you don't have a hoops team eliminates you as a sports town.
I went to a Bucs game and scalped a ticket for 20 bucks this season.
Explain these facts jackass. You are so fucking pathetic! A real sportstown has sellouts galore, sends fans into opposing arena's. Hell the region's teams don't even name themselves after the city, that's real pride there bitch. And if you don't think Tampa and St. Pete are wrought with urban blight...you are one misled bitch, but that's not news in these parts.
I have looked and looked, but I cannot find Tampa Bay on any of these lists.

All major cities have their shithole areas. You guys act like the SB coordinators strategically planned all the parties and events to be held in the worst possible portion of the city. The areas in which everything will be taking place are in fine condition. But that would be tough for you to grasp, because you're still hanging on to your brief memories of when you were there 16 years ago.
