BREAKING NEWS- Mike Martz to become...
...offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions.
According to ESPN, no confirmation yet.
Maybe Mike will figure out what to do with all those #1 draft picks the Lions keep drafting
at wide receiver! :P
Sorry, RaiderFan, looks like you'll have to find your new coach somewhere else.

normally, i wouldn't chime in on something like this; but, i was listening to 1130 WDFN Detwat...over my late lunch today.
Stoney/Wojodummass had Marinelli(sp?) on...and Marinelli came off Pretty Freakin' Solid.
he didn't lead ON to the Martz Hiring...just said that "they were talking."
bIg thing was...Marinelli's Comfort with having that BIG of an EGO working FOR/with Him.
Marinelli had NO Issues...He only wants intensity from his Coaches and Players...whomever they may be.
color me Surprised...This Guy talks a Good GAME!
RACK MILLEN!
i guess that the Lions will at least "Have an Attitude" now.

i LOL'ed when Marinelli said that as a D-coordinator for the Creamsicles...they used to FEAR Marshall Faulk as a Running Threat...a 40 touch/game threat. Martz would be bringing THAT to the Table!e wrote:you're going to love martz. i, for one, will miss the way he'd burn all three time outs in the first quarter. also, say goodbye to your running backs and hello to harrington dropping back to pass when/if the lions ever get to 1st and goal from the half inch line.
ethis move made the lions watchable again. things like this are always funnier when they happen to other teams.
don't mistake myself or funkey for being LionsFan.

I'm excited about what the move could mean to the direction of the team. Since he won't be the head guy, he won't have to actually manage the game which was his weakness in St. Louis. Let him call plays on offense...that's his bread and butter. I'm curious to find out what happens with Harrington...can he be a part of Martz-style of offense. His accuracy is shaky at times but he is able to throw the ball downfield. Not sure if they will still cut him loose or not. The weapons are there to run a Colts or Rams-like offense...the receivers have to learn to work hard and catch the ball. The drop passes are still a problem with this team but the talent is definitely there for Martz to come in and breath new life into this team. Improve the offensive line and the pass rush and we could see a quick turnaround for the Lions. I'm a little more cautious with my optimism after how worked up everyone got over Mariucci's hiring but getting some energetic defensive-minded coaches like Marinelli and Henderson and an inovative offensive coach in Martz makes for the best coaching staff this team has had since I could remember...just gotta get the players to get with the program.
The Lions got a stud in Marinelli. He was a great coach w/ the Bucs and the emotional leader. Gruden would often have Marinelli give the pre-game speech to his players b/c he always found away to strike a cord w/ them. I think losing him w/ hurt the Bucs more than losing Herm or Lovie. He is going to bring a tougness to that team and the players will respect the hell out of him.

I hope you're right. He was well known for his work with the Bucs' d-line and how they've led the league in sacks when he was there. The Lions need a pass rush and hopefully he'll bring that to the team. They are deep on the line and they've got a perennial Pro Bowler anchoring the group, Shaun Rogers. His coaching and Rogers' ability...he could become an All-Pro. Donnie Henderson is a veteran d-coor and he'll bring some good things to the table. He had a very good defensive line in New York...he'll fit in well in Detroit. I like the prospects of the Lions turning things around more than before these hires...Millen might save his job after all.

Can he do any worse?
Rack the hire! It'll be more fun losing games 34-31 than all the creative ways we've been losing of late.

If the Lions could score 31 points in games, they would've been a .500 or better team last year. The defense really wasn't all that bad...injuries and the inability to hold off late comebacks was their Achilles' heel.

Lions | Martz will not take job
Thu, 2 Feb 2006 13:11:06 -0800
Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports former NFL coach Mike Martz will not take the job as the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator. "We couldn't come to an agreement on terms," said Martz, who reportedly accepted the job. "I really do feel bad... but we just couldn't get on the same page." Martz said he plans to return to his hometown of San Diego and will sit out the 2006 football season.
I think Martz is a nutcase , and thats why he has trouble being considered for an HC position .

I think the dude realizes that he is still getting paid in '06 b/c of his contract buy out w/ the Rams and will sit and wait till '07 when another 5-6 HC jobs will be open and some will have forgotten what a marginal HC he really was. It will give him more time to think up more trick plays on XBOX360.

I heard the bad news just as I was leaving work...nearly went off the road. I wasn't too naive to think he was going to stay in Detroit for a long time...it was going to be a springboard for a future job. Sounds like the stipulation in the deal that would force him to stay all three years was what killed the whole thing. I blame Millen...

A nutcase like Martz would be ideal for the Raiders job.I think Martz is a nutcase , and thats why he has trouble being considered for an HC position .
He may yet end up there, if Alice can talk him out of taking the year off.

Davis just wanted to pick his brain when Martz requested the interview . Martz already backed out of consideration for the Raiders job , I think because he knew he wasn't gonna get it after all .Funkywhiteboy wrote:Thank goodness I left the thread title open-ended, so I don't have to edit that part! :wink:drummer wrote:Hold the presses :

A lot of football people are skeptical of Mad Martz , because he is nuts . All the drama in St. Louis between he , Shaw , and Armey shows that .

The hang up before was not only money but the fact the Lions wanted to keep him for more than just one season to prevent him from taking another job. I think if you left the option for him to leave, he'd work harder to try to audition for another job. If he leaves after won year and the offense is much improved, I can deal with that. Hopefully while he's here, he grooms an assistant to be his succcessor if he leaves town. I don't expect him to be here for more than two seasons. Some team will come calling if he turns around this sluggish offense. If he fails, he'll be out on his ass and Millen will find another scapegoat...I mean coach.
I'm getting more and more that Harrington will probably hang around for at least one more year. Mariucci was a QB guru that couldn't do enough with him but he ran a very vanilla version of the WCO. Martz will bring a more wide open and creative offense to this team and hopefully this can work better for Harrington because I don't know if there will be a better option available to immediately come in and start.
Pollard is an athletic tight end that will work well in the system. Rogers can hopefully be the deep threat and the two Williamses can be the underneath guys. Jones isn't in same mold as a Marshall Faulk...he's probably more like Jackson. Bryson is a very good receiver out of the backfield and could be a very nice weapon in Martz's offense. If the guys buy into the system and into Marinelli's overall program, the sky is the limit for these guys. This is a very talented team but they don't have the hearts and minds of champions. Hopefully the triad of Marinelli, Martz and Henderson can whip these guys into shape and make them a playoff team.
