SP2?

Post by Mister Bushice »

Anyone have any trouble with it?

I need to have it if I want to use the bluetooth link between my laptop and my palm, but I've heard so many bad things about SP2, I don't wanna go there if it means a shitload of incompatability issues.

The ones I'm most concerned about are Zonealarm, and driver hang ups on bootup.

I've heard the same things about SP2, especially if you're updating an existing installation, so I just let it slide until recently.

When I installed my new primary HD a week or so ago and reinstalled my system I downloaded all of the updates, including SP2, so it was essentially a new installation. I haven't had any problems so far and my machine is running at least as well as it did when it was new. I don't have a personal firewall installed, though.

I found a list of programs that had difficulty with SP2. It wasn't short, and some of the programs are actually Microsoft windows programs. Unbelieveable.

Go ahead and install SP2, just make sure you backup beforehand.

The only real problems I've run into with SP2 is the firewall itself. It seems to goof regularly but most programs seem to work with it ok nowdays.

SP2 has been out long enough that it should play nice with most antivirus and firewall software. I waited until about a month ago to install it on my two XP machines and I had no problems. I don't use zone alarm though so your results may vary. Check recent posts on their forum to see if there are still issues.

You can disable the SP2 firewall, and tell it to let ZoneAlarm take its place. I have had no problems with that.

cool. Good to know. I have all of the other updates from MS installed - man do they have some gates you have to jump over to get that stuff now! I had to install a program that verifies the license after I installed an installer that would install the updates.

I was only holding off SP2 because I saw nothing to indicate they had addressed the incompatability problem.

Zone Alarm and Integrity desktop had some issues but we've been running them at work without any problems since day one.
