Of course, the Raiders are one of the teams interested.

This just in:

The Chargers will not designate quarterback Drew Brees as neither their franchise nor transition player, meaning that the team will either reach a long-term agreement with their 2005 starter or see him hit the free agent market.

“We were very concerned about the guaranteed numbers, which is pretty old news now,” Smith said. “It’s been out there. The franchise tag as we know is guaranteed. The transition tag would have been flexible. It’s no longer flexible from what I understand. If it’s the transition tag, it’s solid number. We didn’t want to invest that solid number at this point in time.”

However, Smith did reiterate that the Chargers and Brees hope to agree on a long-term contract.

General Manager A.J. Smith discusses the team’s personnel plans for the upcoming season. Watch the complete half hour press conference here.

Video: A.J. Smith (36:36)

The FREE RealPlayer plug-in is necessary to play the Video clips above.

“We cannot get it done at this point in time, so right now we have two out of the three (quarterbacks from last year),” Smith said. “Where it goes from there, we shall see. We have a value on our players and contracts, and they have a value on it. We’re just not agreeing to terms.”
“We’ve had a proposal that has been rejected. We’ll continue to talk. How long that goes, to what point in time I just can’t tell you right now because I just know that we’re talking. But we’re pretty firm in what we believe and how we do things.”

This is NOT good news! I'll go the Bullsh!t route here and say Smith is bringing up the injury issue to keep the freekin wolves away. Anything else is unacceptable!

Brees will end up in Dallas. Hes a native Texan and I don't see Alice being interested in him. If Gruden was still coach,he'd be a great fit. but with Al's ERR Art's( :meds: ) offense he doesnt have that kind of big arm Davis desires.

I say give the kid Walter a chance. Enough retread QBs.

Brees threw for 3,576 yards last season, the sixth-highest total in franchise history. He also tossed 24 touchdown passes (with 15 interceptions) while completing 64.6 percent of his passes
Nothing mediocre about those numbers at all.
Nothing spectacular about them either. And with one of the best ground games, best recieving RBs and best TE period, one would have thought that he would be a bit better than 7.2 yds per attempt.

But hey, we'll all get so see how Brees plays without LT behind him next year. I'm sure that will work out just fine for him.

The Chargers flat out fucked him over, and he's told the media exactly that as well-what do you think the best revenge would be?

Signing with the Raiders. There isnt another team that is in San Diego's head nearly as much as they are.

Bree's is cocky as all fuck too-I wouldnt put it past him to do such a thing....especially with our fucked up QB situation.

My opinion of him hasnt changed one bit-but it would be worth it just to see your reaction and for YOU to come to the Dark Side because of your golden boy signing here, doll.

Give Brees his due! He's a top 6 QB period.

The very important question, of course, is how is Brees' wing doing...?

Or, how will it do...?

He ought to be coming into the prime of his career around the next few years.

He's sort of a poor man's Rich Gannon.

Mixes the ball around well, generally doesn't kill his own team with mistakes, and is tough, mentally and physically.

A nice, capable NFL QB.

A team can win a lot of games with him taking snaps.

Link?
You can pick any of the charger links on Sign on San Diego and you'll get many quotes and articles.......among them:
Drew Brees wrote:"By saying there's no way they're going to put a (franchise or transition player) tag on me, that's basically saying if we don't get this guy on our terms we can do without him."
“Unfortunately there's not much loyalty in this business. It's really about what have you done for me lately and how cheap can we get you.”
“I can start throwing the beginning of May,” he said. “That's three months until the beginning of training camp. You're telling me that with three months of throwing I'm not going to be back? That's eight months from the time I had surgery until the first game. I know I'll be ready.”
I want to win a championship here. But if the Chargers don't want to keep me, if they want to let me go, I'll go win a championship somewhere else.”

Base salary and incentive laden deal on the table for Brees currently with AJ repeatedly saying that he isnt budging......

Sounds like Bree's just wants a fair deal and LOYALTY from his team....hmmmmm, what franchise would he fit perfectly in again?

Shit, he'll NEVER know loyalty and family like the one he'll have in Oakland. EVER.

Know any other top 6 QBs who have been unrestricted free agents?

I didn't think so. The Chargers have spoken volumes about what they think of Brees.

Keeping Collins makes no sense

LET ME GET this straight: Next month, the Raiders must decide whether to give Kerry Collins $2.5 million just for the privilege of renegotiating his contract?

Give me a minute ... OK, that's enough time.

No. Flat-out no chance.

Are you kidding me?

Art Shell claims: "Kerry Collins has been an outstanding quarterback."

That's hard to dispute, especially when you put "has-been" in the same sentence as "Kerry Collins." He did, after all, lead Penn State to an unbeaten season and Rose Bowl win over Oregon in 1995.

Clearly, Shell wasn't talking about 2005. And if he was, the Raiders can't hire an offensive coordinator soon enough.

Shell went on to say: "(Collins) is excited about moving forward next year."

OK, that proves it. Shell must have spent last year in a shell because that's the problem with Collins — he cannot move forward. Or sideways. He can only move backward — seven steps after each snap — to a spot at which every defender knows when and where he'll be.

Al Davis notes the Raiders' offensive line slipped last season. Ha. You try protecting a million-dollar statue.

And the Raiders had no running game? Well, duh. That's what happens when Collins is your quarterback. His presence doesn't exactly command "nickel" or "dime" coverage.

Speaking of nickels and dimes, I wouldn't give either to have Collins back in 2006. Pay him $2.5 million just for the right to pay him more? The Raiders should seriously consider showering another team with that kind of cash to entice it to take him off their hands.

I say point him toward someone on the Raiders' schedule. That'll assure at least one win.

All the more reason to avoiud Brees like the plague.

I like Jon Kitna . I wouldn't mind him in a Niner uni . I doubt he would sign with SF because Smith is the de-facto starter , but he is more than just a capable QB .

The rest of the list , outside of Brees and the re-signed players to date ( fukkin' SF signed that faggot Jesse Palmer again ) , is mediocre at best .

Rack us owning your "loyal" team the last couple years.

This is all just business postering. This is the Chargers way of running Marty out of town. They want Brees to stay. Of course, nothing has happened yet. We still have a decent team. Howz about you? :)

You don't think the fact that they have a former #1 pick who happens to play the same position who is also making a shit load of guaranteed money over the next 2-3 years has anything to do with it?

The Chargers have said nothing about their feelings for Drew Brees as a qb. They just can't afford him considering they have more pressing needs and an untradeable QB who needs more playing time.

If they had a top flight QB already under center, they would be shopping Rivers, not their current starter. They don't, and they are not.

Wether or not there is a market for Rivers is not important. If Brees were in the category of an elite QB, the Chargers would not be letting him get away without putting at least a franchise tag on him and ensuring some return value. That they are not tells you going forward that they see him as a shorter Chad Pennington.
