The Poison Pill contract strikes again

Post by BSmack »

Looks like Seattle is playing tit for tat with the Vikings.
The Star Tribune reported that the offer included $5.25 million in guaranteed money. But like the Vikings did to Seattle in the Hutchinson deal, the Seahawks have added a few "poison pills," or provisions that guarantee the entire contract if they occur, according to the Seattle Times. The Times reported that Burleson's entire deal is guaranteed if he plays five games in the state of Minnesota during any one year of the deal. Another offbeat provision is that if Burleson is paid more on average per year than all of the Seahawks' running backs combined, all of the deal is guaranteed, the Times reported.

At some point in time the commishioner and the union are going to have to deal with this issue. The Hutchinson deal set a dangerous precedent. The idea of offering incentives that are makeable with one team and not makeable for the other is a very bad idea. It pretty much gives teams the ability to persue restricted free agents as if they are unrestricted free agents, as all you have to do is craft a deal that the other team is incapable of signing. Just wait until Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones decide to try this one on for size.

Rack the Seahawks. They are exposing the stupidity of allowing this poison pill crap to go unfettered.
