Questions for club makers...

Post by WolverineSteve »

Indy's post on another thread brought up problems I have. It deals with club length. I'm 6'8". I began golfing as a lefty (I bat left, play hockey left, so naturally I took up golfing as a lefty). After 10 years or so, and not getting any better, I ditched my custom Taylor Mades and bought a set of right handed King Cobras off the rack so to speak. I enjoy the game much better as a right-hander as all instruction in golf mags and such are made for right handers. The point of this yammering is that I'm ready to step up and spend the dough for a new set, as I've committed to playing as a RH. What's the scoop on extended clubs vs. longer shafts? Do the make longer shafts for irons? My TM's were extended which I believe are just inserts on the top of the shafts. What's the best value in a set of irons or woods? Are knockoffs comperable to the real ones? I really like the hybrids vs. long irons. My ideal bag would have in it...1,3,7 woods, hybrid 2,3,4, and irons 5-sw.

Any help is mucho appreciated.

I am using some Titleist 822 OS irons. I like them, but I would really like to try the Callaway Fusions. I am not hip to the actual quality of the Fusion clones, but I have considered them as a cheap alternative since the actual Fusions are so expensive.

Since you really just want a 5-SW, clones can be ideal. I have found some online clone clubmakers that offer individual irons from the clone sets. You can order just the irons you want. You can also specify +/- extensions on the shafts. For example, you like the extended so they take a longer shaft and cut it say +1.5 inches for your necessary added length. They can also do lie adjustments.

Here is a link where you can get the Fusion clones, $130 for a set of 3-PW, made. There's options here for extending the shaft, getting different shafts and upgrading the grip.

This website has many other styles to choose from besides the Callaways as well. I am going to consider trying these out sometime before dropping the major $$$ on the real thing.

One other thing to try to save money is getting the previous year's models of the real things. Sometimes, you can get these up to 50% off. However, you are usually limited with the customizing for your height.

I strongly am against using the inserts to lengthen clubs....

the only thing that i can add to this is:

Lie Angle works in unision with shaft length.

being 6'8"....you obviously need shafts 1 1/2--2" x-long; but, you also need a more upright Lie Angle to go with it.

check out pinggolf.com

fill out their on-line club fitting form.

trouble with component iron heads is that they won't be "upright" enough for a man of your stature.

most Major Manufacturers won't offer irons that can "properly" FIT you either.

wolvie

drop me a pm if you can come down to Toledo and we'll check it out.

Qbert,

What do you think of the clones, though? I'm sure there's some orientals in Japan making these pretty close to specs as far as the real ones. Do you feel it is worth the small amount of dough to give them a shot before going large? Or is the comparison just nowhere close enough to the real thing?

Like I said, the clone I hit, I was hitting well. I know you can hit most anything with a good swing. Just curious as to your experience or hearing what you've heard about clones...

Forged Iron component clubheads aren't really an issue. Cast Iron, metal wood and Titanium heads can be.

virtually ALL clubheads are CAST in China due to OUR wonderful environmental laws.

the exception is PING Irons, putters and wedges. they are still able to build them from Scratch. from a wax mold to in your hands...PING has had complete control of that clubhead.

when an iron (or wood) is cast...the Casting House controls the cooling process (not the "Name Brand")...hence the consistency (or lack thereof). cast clubheads almost always have "hotspots." on exact swings you may jack your 6 iron 170 and then the next 180....

my point...you don't "know" how consistent a clubhead actually is...Callaway, Clone, Cobra....

BUT, when buying a club from a Major Mfg--->you know that they are going to match up club heads via their weights and match them properly with shafts; building them accordingly to your specification.

if you are buying a component; well, unless you have a gram scale...you're trusting that the component company weighed each head according to what their catalog states....AND they gave you a set of iron heads that match weight wise too.

then you have to put them together...need a swingweight scale, knowledge of how to add weight, etc. to get your set to match up. hope that the shafts that you picked out marry-up with the clubheads pretty well. (weight of the shaft and grip change the balance of the club.)

to your point with a Driver head...it comes down to consistency again. plus, you need to check if that clubhead has been deemed by the USGA as conforming.

you shouldn't have a problem putting together that 50" driver with the Ping Clone Head....it just won't be legal.

its worth $100 for the FUN!

My problem is not that I'm particularly tall (I'm not short, either...long side of 6'1"), but...

Don't know if I've ever brought it up on these boards, due to fear of ridicule...but I have disproportionately long arms. As long as I'm in short sleeves, nobody ever seems to notice, but my arms are way too long for my body. Comes in hany when trying to get stuff in the cupboard over the fridge and when generating a lot of club speed, but one of these days, I'll have to have a set made with a really funky lie angle to compensate for my funky body angle.

One of these days...

As far as cheapy knockoffs, I've never heard a bad word about Pine Meadow Golf. Local outfit here, but I know they're main focus is online sales. I've never dealt with them, but I'm told they offer similar quality knockoffs to the competition, but keep the prices reasonable. Worth a look if you're in the market for such things, anyway.
