Exterior and interior of the gymnasium.
Kim Chaek University of Technology is the highest institute of scientific and technological education in our country. A modern e-library and gymnasium were recently built, changing the looks of the university.
The e-library is an updated one where catalogue browse, book and data reading and lecture are carried out by computers.
Covering a total floor space of 16,000-plus square metres, it consists of one underground floor and five ground floors where there are one hundred and several ten rooms including twelve electronic reading rooms, twelve book reading rooms and four book reading halls. It accommodates some 2,000 persons.
As it is equipped with various kinds of publications, e-books and materials and is provided with updated information means, it is a library and at the same time a centre for education and research. Teachers, researchers and students of the university, any institutions and families
can connect themselves with the library through computer networks for 24 hours and can be promptly served with books, e-books and data according to the newly developed retrieval system.
It is so arranged that different forms of education such as social education, education by correspondence and evening-school education can be given here
with its remote-controlled educational system. A remote-controlled lecture room is situated on the second floor, so any educational institutions, scientific research institutions and families can connect their computers with computer networks and receive lectures any time.
The library also contains research rooms and means of information, so it plays the function of a research institution and of information service such as collection, arrangement and information of data. Besides scientific seminars, scientific deliberations, international exchange and book shows can be held in the library.
The newly built gymnasium is a multi-purpose gymnasium where sports games and training of different kinds, artistic performances and meetings can be held. Its total floor space is some 14,000 square metres and consists of one underground floor and two ground floors with a seating capacity of over 4,000. It has the main
game hall, four training centres and scores of rooms. With two large horizontal lines on its walls, it is in contrast with the university buildings around and the big columns on its right and left wings show the strong spirit of sportsmen and the grandeur of the building. And different from other gymnasiums, it has no wall partitions on its second floor to make utmost use of natural lighting as it is, and the gently-sloping layout of seats makes its inside look more spacious.
Basketball, pingpong, boxing and physical training rooms and dissemination rooms of sports science and technology are also located in the gymnasium. Besides, it is furnished with a barber’s and baths and other cultural and service amenities.
The university’s e-library and gymnasium are significant buildings as the leader Kim Jong Il directed deep concern to the whole undertaking from their designing to the building operation and gave guidance.
He gave on-the-spot guidance to the newly built e-library and gymnasium in January. Saying that the e-library built on the basis of cutting-edge technology is a monumental creation to be registered in the new century, he expressed great satisfaction over the fact that they had built a library which reflected the looks of an ideal society our people had had in mind and a large multi-purpose gymnasium. He set forward the tasks to be carried out in running them.
Teachers and students of the university exert all their wisdom and energy to repay his love and trust with high scientific and technological achievements.
