2006 Red Sox vs Yankees Series 1 & 2

Post by Jack »

They finally meet!!

The Red Sox are in first and the Yankees are in second and neither team is very impressive so far!!

A 2 game series (What is up with that??) in Boston.

Let's start the Chatter!!

Game 1... Wakefield - Wang on No Work Monday!! Will Immigrants be at the game?? What about the players.. Will they support the Strike??

Will Alex Gonzalez swing at any pitches??

Game 2 ... Chacon - Beckett.

This will be Beckett's first Challenge as A Red Sox vs. the Evil Empire, How will he do?

Will Sheffield play?? How will Johnny Damon be treated by the Sox fans?

If the Yankees fail to score 6 runs, can they win? Will the Red Sox Middle Relievers step up or continue to step down...

Will Jonathan Papelbon get a chance to save a game??

I look forward to both Teams waking up!!
.....

GO SOX!!

Judas Damon wrote:"I expect them to cheer what our team accomplished back then. Winning the World Series was pretty awesome," Damon said. "I expect them to boo the fact that I'm here. That I went over and that I'm playing with a team that truly needed me, truly wanted me."

New Damon T-Shirt being sold outside Fenway. On the back it says:

Looks like Jesus
Acts like Judas
Throws like Mary

Interesting that Chicago- Cleveland plays each other at the same time..

but there's no hype there!!

and IMO (at this point in the year)..

Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians are playing better and are more interesting (Right Now) than the Red Sox and Yankees..

but Baseball's ultimate Stage is Red Sox vs. Yankees!

GO SOX!

If the media outlets were located in San Jose, it would be Giants/Dodgers.
If the media outlets were ocated in Lincoln Park, it would be Cubs/Cards.

Yankees Red Sox is awesome.

Love,

Have you ever seen the crowds at away games for both of these teams? There are alot of fans for each team outside of New England and the East Coast.......

???

Isn't California the biggest media outlet in the country??

***

In other news...

Doug is BACK!!! Watch OUT!!

The Boston Red Sox have finalized a trade to obtain catcher Doug Mirabelli from the San Diego Padres in exchange for catcher Josh Bard, minor-league pitcher Cla Meredith and $100,000..

A MUCH NEEDED MOVE!!

RACK THAT seemingly insignificant move!!

It's moderately significant!!

******
Pitcher-Catcher Relations

The time honored term "battery" has come down to us through the years as a traditional baseball/softball term to define the relationship between the pitcher and catcher. A battery in military terms describes a group of artillery pieces which by definition deliver missiles to a target. Possibly the term itself goes back to Civil War times when a "good game of ball" was played by soldiers of both sides as a favorite form of recreation. In any case, the relationship between the pitcher and catcher is crucial to a successful team.

I won't argue the overpaid part...

BUT

ESPN is in Connecticut

ESPN has only been around for ? 25 years..

The Red Sox - Yankees Rivalry goes back to...

January 5th, 1920

You have to admit.. ESPN didn't start the fire!!

and Californians will never take the game as serious as the East Coast!

Oh yeah, re: Mirabelli...

The Yankees also tried to obtain Mirabelli to keep him from returning to the Red Sox.

ESPN started the hype this past decade. Despite facing each other for many decades, the over-the-top rivalry hype didn't exist ten years ago. It was a story spun by people looking for ratings.

Is it a rivalry; yes.
Is it worth 33% of tonight's sports news coverage; fuck no.
Will it get 33% of tonight's coverage; yes.

Fucking Carolina/Duke doesn't get as much love as Yankees/Sawx.

Sox-Yanks in May: mild to no interest
Sox-Yanks in October: definite interest

The thing that annoys me about ESPN mostly is that they talk down to us and think that we need to be reminded why this is a major rivalry. If you're a baseball fan, you know the back story. I can do without the hype...just give me be the game itself.

I hear ESPN is now going to give an ESPY to the most outstanding player in the Yanks-Red Sox season series.

Aside from the regional bias, NY/BOS is hyped because we're talking about two teams that are consistently in the playoffs. The scenarios you mentioned wouldn't work as well considering three of those teams do not field consistent playoff contenders.

Somebody in here sounds like a fag with a bag full of marbles!!

Bizzaro,

You did have half a point when you spoke of the media being a main reason for the rivalry... but are you very young?? ESPN??

Baseball talk started with Radio and the local fish wraps long before this thing called Television..

The local Radio stations used to broadcast SOME of their games and people would sit around the Radio listening..

The Sports news used to be run after regular news .. at the Movies..
(Movie Studios based out of California and New York)

and in addition to TV and Radio.. along came Sports Illustrated (1954)

*************************************

as far as the "RIVALRY" in my mind, it was their all my life (43 years). I remember life Before ESPN, before Cable TV, Before USA Today, before remote control TV (Someone stop me!!)

I remember the fights between the Yankees and Sox back then, they were EPIC!!

One in particular,, Bill Lee vs. The Yankees (Rivers and Nettles will always be Assholes in mind after watching that fight..)

**
On the night of May 20, 1976, while backing up home plate in Yankee Stadium, Lee unwisely took part in a full-scale rumble, the results of which nearly cost him his left arm, not to mention his career. While trying to prevent the Yankees' Otto Velez from joining the fray, Lee was punched by Mickey Rivers, and then grabbed from behind by Graig Nettles and heaved to the ground on his shoulder. At that point, films show, Rivers pounded away at Lee under a mountain of bodies. When Lee finally was able to get up and throw a punch, his arm was shot. Nonetheless, he went after Nettles, who opened up with both fists, and Lee was hammered into a bloody pulp.

Because of his assault on Lee, Rivers has been pelted with racial epithets, bottles, bolts and firecrackers at Fenway, and Lee still wonders if his shoulder is all there. "I don't think the Yankees started the fight to get to me," Lee says, "but once it started, I know there were a few Yankees looking for me. My opinions may have caught up with themselves." A long time before the fight, Lee had described the Yankees' gladiatorial prowess as the equal of "a bunch of hookers swinging their purses."

*********************************************************

The Yankees and Red Sox are in the same division, almost always field competitive teams, have passionate fans who for the most part stay in NY or Boston and raise their kids, grand kids and great grandkids and tell stories of the past.. and baseball has marked the time.
... That is the reason for the rivalry!!

In '97 Mike DiFelice started three epic fights against the Pirates yet he hasn't been inducted into the ESPN Hall of Hype. As a backup catcher he has yet to get the name recognition as the Red Sox back up catcher despite comparable achievement.

A rivalry exists. It is a good one. It is an old one. It is most likely the best in baseball. [mypoint]It is not 50% of the sports world.[/mypoint]

It's on ESPN Classic as I type... Game 6 ALCS..

Mark Bellhorn's Home Run to Left Field that required the Umps to conference... Priceless!!

Sox are up 4-1 in the 7th, I can't wait to see how this one ends..
AGAIN!!

Update...

It's now 4-2 in the 8th, Arroyo pitching to A-Rod. Jeter on first...

** In the 9th Inning, Tim McCarver says...

"A walk is the same thing as a Home run at this point!"

Noticeably missing since 2004 are YankeeeFans willing to talk SMACK..

This is what happens when FrontRunner's Teams are no longer in front.

*****
The Mistake that George Steinbrenner and the Yankees have made over the last 8 years or so is lack of player development, patience and creativity.

The Yankees have been paying for the top talent in the game based on past performance instead of seeing the future and developing it.

Jeter, Posada and Williams are "Old School Yankees"

Giambi, Sheffield, Damon, Matsui, Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina are the "New School Yankees" and are mostly on the downhill of their careers or near the downhill.

I expect to see the Yankees push for Clemens and Ken Griffey Jr. soon.

The Yankees have not prepared for the future because George wants everything NOW!!

I personally think the Yankees should use Bernie Williams, Bubba Crosby, Melky Cabrera and Giambi as outfielders (Wait for Sheffield to recover) and try to build their pitching staff.. (instead of buying Griffey Jr, Torrii Hunter, Aubrey Huff, etc..)

BUY Zito, Dontrelle Willis
