This is arguably the greatest comedy of all time, and a bonafide cult classic. There's no reason for not releasing a special edition by now. I've been tempted to pick up the bare bones DVD (already have it on VHS), but I keep hoping they'll come out with a special edition.
I was thinking maybe they were waiting for the new Kevin Smith movie to come out, but that doesn't look to be hitting theaters anytime soon.
Why is there no Fletch Special Edition DVD???

Couldn't agree with you more, Dub. The greatest comedy ever made, bar none. I'm pretty sure there are SEs of Animal House & Caddyshack. There's no reason this shouldn't have happened already.
I heard Jason Lee was Smith's choice for the prequel "Fletch Won," but with My Name Is Earl doing pretty well, it might not get done.

Chevy Chase owns partial rights to the series. Bought it when it was still a series of books before they made the movies. A lot of people who read the books hated the movies because they were almost nothing like the books. Chevy made it way to slapstick. The production company that shares in the rights of the series wanted recently to remake the movies more true to the book series in a joint venture with Kevin Smith ("Clerks", "Mallrats", "Chasing Amy", "Dogma", ect.) directing. Chevy hamstrung them and tried to force them into giving him a part in the movie, and once again turning it into the same sort of slapstick crap he did the first time. This wasn't Kevin Smith's or the production company's vision and Kevis Smith basically told Cheby to take a long walk off a short cliff and moved onto "Jersey Girl". After "Jersey Girl" had finished production Kevin Smith reinquired with the company and Chase. Same story different verse. Since then Universal Studios and Chevy Chase have been having a pissing contest over the entire series. Kevin Smith has moved on to other projects including a "Green Hornet" series based on the old TV series but has left the door open to coming back to the Fletch series. Kevin Smith has/had tenetive plans to have Jason Lee play the role of Fletch.
I don't think anyone will ever see anything come of this series unless Universal and Mr. Chase can bring the pissing contest to a hault.
Atleast this is what I heard last... it's been over a year since I looked into it but my wife is a rabbid Kevin Smith fan and we own all of his movies, in extended director's cut where avaliable.

I was looking at some Laker Jim guy's site and he had a different take on the Chase/Smith saga.
He also claims that some dude from Scrubs is now being considered for the role of Fletch. Personally, I've always thought David Duchovney would make a good Fletch. He has that droll, smart-ass delivery down pat.
I'll try to find a link to the site...

We have seen pieces of it and I have looked for it casualy in the past but it has sort of slipped my mind over the last few months. Thanks for reminding me of it though cause my wife has Bday here in a couple of weeks and it would be the perfect gift for her. I won't have much money to spend on her for her birthday this year because I am going all out today for Mother's Day for her and I have dropped a bit too much cash but it is worth it for her first mothers day (I posted about in Cul de Smack). Now I just have to find it.BBMarley wrote:SCS- have you guys seen the "Night with Kevin Smith" film. It is a compialtion of lectures he did at different colleges.
