ND Nation

I'd be all for it. I think it would benefit both schools.

Didn't quite get this quote from your source:
Notre Dame's (academic) standards are much closer to an average Division I school than to Stanford.
Huh? Seen the USNews rankings lately? http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/colleg ... _brief.php

ND is ranked 18th, and 5th among schools that play Division 1-A football. Moreover, ND's ranking is quite comparable to several other high-level academic institutions with whom Stanford is in negotiations -- Northwestern, Rice and Vanderbilt. Methinks that just the rantings of one person afflicted by sour grapes syndrome.

Having said that, if the ND-Stanford series ever ends, ND-Cal would be a good replacement. But I can't see us playing two teams from the Bay Area every year.

Its a perfect matchup, two schools that think they are much more important than they actually are.

Oh, and if the ND/Stanford series were to end, I wouldn't mind seeing this match-up for a few years. I also wouldn't mind a series with Oregon or other west coast teams.

For some reason, I was thinking about m2's suggestion this morning, and something hit me that m2 might find interesting.

Next year we play UCLA, and next year will be the 25th season since I first went to ND as a freshman in 1982. During that quarter-century span, we will have played 9 of the 10 Pac-10 teams. The lone exception? Cal.

Btw, doing some further thinking, it occurred to me that of the six BCS conferences, in that same 25 year span the Pac-10 will have far and away the highest percentage of teams to play ND. Here's a comparison just in case anyone is interested:

ACC (8/12): Play Georgia Tech and North Carolina next year, to bring the total to 8. We will not have played Clemson, Duke (on the schedule in '07), Virginia Tech or Wake Forest. Note that we played Miami when Miami was an independent, and Boston College when Boston College was an independent and a member of the Big East. BC is on the schedule in '07 as an ACC member, but that is supposed to be the series finale barring bowl games.

Big East (4/8): Have not played newer members Cincinnati, UConn, Louisville and South Florida.

Big Ten (7/11): Have not played Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota or Wisconsin. Note that Penn State ranks fourth on the list in terms of number of games played during that span, the bulk of those games were played when Penn State was an independent.

Big Twelve (8/12): Have not played Iowa State, Kansas State, Okie State or Taco Tech. Have not played Colorado or Missouri since formation of the Big 12 Conference, but did play within that 25-year span when said schools were members of the Big 8 Conference.

SEC (7/12): Have not played Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky or Mississippi State. Played South Carolina when South Carolina was an independent.

I'm not necessarily doubting this, but I don't remember ND playing Oregon during that span.

Not saying it didn't happen...just saying I don't remember it.

And none of my go-to sites can confirm or deny(not without a whole bunch of digging, anyway).

I do remember Oregon State putting an asswhooping on them in a bowl, not too many years ago.

Twice bitch, and don't you forget it!

Honestly, I don't think we've played Oregon in the last 25 years. Can't think of it off the top of my head.

As mentioned, my research is FAR from what could even remotely be considered "comprehensive," but I haven't found anything to indicate that U of O and ND have played ever....although I could certainly be wrong.

1982. Tie game.

That one is indelibly etched into my brain forever. I was a freshman at ND and the game was played over ND's fall break (it was at the U&L so I didn't go). I happened to go back to my high school and catch a high school football game. I ran into the Vice-Principal, an Irish Christian Brother from NYC. He greets me with:

"'Ow can you tie a team call DA DUCKS?????!!!!"

If you knew the guy and heard me saying it, instead of just reading it on this board, that line would crack you up to no end. Sorry it's sort of an inside joke, but it's the biggest reason I remember that game.

Btw, my memory for this sort of thing is pretty good -- I'm sort of a Rainman-type geek when it comes to sports trivia in general and ND football in particular. But in case anyone doubts me, here's a link: http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/di ... eamid=2424

I think all the BCS conference teams should boycott playing Notre Dame until Notre dame joins a conference and is forced to share their wealth. Stop acting like nothing can be done.

Too many teams have traditional rivalries with ND, and for the rest, the lure of playing on national TV is too much to pass up. Throw in the fact that college football fans will automatically reject any system which purports to crown a national football champion but which automatically excludes ND from consideration due to its independent status.

Tell you what: why don't you lead by example, go to USC's athletic department, and demand that they terminate their contract with ND? Then tell us what they say after they stop laughing at you.

That was the website I was looking for, Terry.

Which provided the information I was looking for.

Well done.

Good thing ND stepped up to the Ducks when they were battling Oregon State for the honor of "Worst team in D1." They wouldn't stand a chance, now.

Yep. Because that would happen. :meds:

On further review, I gotta go back to this . . .
SoCalTrjn wrote:I think all the BCS conference teams should boycott playing Notre Dame until Notre dame joins a conference and is forced to share their wealth. Stop acting like nothing can be done.
Now, I can see this take coming from someone who roots for a team that doesn't play ND with anything approaching regularity. But for 'SC fan to run this borders upon world-class ignorance. In fact, I seriously question the bona fides of any USC "fan" who sincerely believes this. Simply put, if ND ever joins a conference, that would put the ND-USC rivalry in serious jeopardy. Now, I'm not saying that ND and USC would never play again if ND joined a conference, but there's a very good chance that, at a minimum, they would no longer play every year. And it's all but a given that this rivalry -- unquestionably the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football, and quite possibly the greatest rivalry in college football, period -- would lose some of its luster.

I'll play devil's advocate for a moment, and assume that ND will join a conference. In that event, I think it's pretty much a given that ND would only consider joining a BCS conference that has room to grow. That leaves only three possibilities: The Big East, Big Ten or Pac-10. ND in the Pac-10 seems a little odd to most people perhaps, but in a vacuum it could work. After all, ND has a pretty sizeable following out west, and would be joining the conference with its principal rival. Not to mention that the U&L schools might actually agree to expansion, even though it would mean a lost California road trip, if ND's national TV contract were part of the deal. The problem is that it would not be in a vacuum. With the exception of football and possibly men's basketball, travel within the Pac-10 would not be feasible for ND's athletic department. ND has said that it will not join a football conference if doing so will hurt the rest of its athletic department. ND couldn't join the Pac-10 for football and continue to play in the Big East in other sports, so ND would need to find another home for its other sports. The two most likely options in that regard would be the Atlantic 10 or the Horizon League, each of which is one (or more) step down from the Big East in every sport.

If ND were to join the Big Ten, call me crazy, but I suspect that the Rose Bowl would have something, not necessarily positive, to say about an annual ND-USC matchup. And even if that's not the case, the Big Ten would require the matchup to be moved to September. Imho, moving ND-USC to September from its traditional mid-October (if at ND)/late November (if at SoCal) time slot would cause the game to lose something in translation. Not to mention that if ND were to join the Big Ten, your stated reason for forcing ND into a conference no longer applies. Under the new deal, ND's share of BCS revenue isn't substantially larger than that which goes to the BCS conferences even when ND does qualify for a BCS bowl. That means that the lion's share of ND's "wealth" comes from its TV deal. No way the Big Ten allows ND to keep its TV deal, so in this scenario, the wealth, rather than being shared, disappears.

The only realistic option for ND to join a conference and the luster of ND-USC continuing would be for ND to join the Big East. But even then, the realities of scheduling 7-8 conference games per season might well force ND to take a break from the series every now and then. And I have no doubt that were ND to join the Big East, yayhoos like you would criticize ND for taking the path of least resistance to the BCS (I'll at least give you limited props for not suggesting that as the reason for forcing ND into a conference).

Not to mention that your scenario is unrealistic. No way enough teams from BCS conferences would ever force a boycott upon ND, at least not as long as ND has a TV contract. And if ND ever loses its TV contract, the football program will have more serious problems than some pie-in-the-sky boycott idea anyway, and probably would have to join a conference in that event.
