A 16-year-old youth was fatally wounded early Thursday in what police said was a struggle over a shotgun among three young robbers and their intended target.
Police said Monte Golliday and two companions had approached a man, 38, about 1:15 a.m. Thursday in front of his home in the 4900 block of Jeannie Place.
One of Golliday's companions pointed a shotgun at the man, said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. James Morissey. In an ensuing struggle, the shotgun discharged, striking Golliday in the abdomen.
He died about two hours later at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis.
Golliday's companions were arrested a short time later at their homes in Alorton a few blocks from the shooting. They remained in custody pending application for charges today.
Police did not identify the man involved in the incident.
Later Thursday, approached by a reporter while he was sitting on his front porch, he was reluctant to talk about the incident and would not identify himself.
"I was minding my own business, and I don't bother nobody around here," he said. "I didn't do nothing wrong."
Morissey said he expects no charges against the man.
"He didn't bring a gun to this thing," Morrissey said. "They did."
Golliday lived in Cahokia and was the grandson of a well-known businessman, Jimmie Golliday, who owns Golliday Restaurant and Golliday hardware store, both in Alorton.
The shotgun blast awakened Queen Saxton, 42, who lives nearby.
She went to Golliday as he lay on the ground and prayed for him as they waited for an ambulance.
She later learned that her son was acquainted with Golliday.
"That's horrible for such a young life to be taken away so soon," Saxton said.

Well you can tell she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The bitch hears a shotgun blast next to her house and the first thing she does is go outside and approach the area where it came from.smackaholic wrote:yeah, just breaks my fukking heart."That's horrible for such a young life to be taken away so soon," Saxton said.
