Pick'em Games...one more year
The college football season is coming up. I've lobbyed hard with the powers that be at the office that I desparately need broadband access at home and that they should pay for it. Well, by golly, they finally came around.
Therefore, I am announcing my comeback for 2006. I will continue to carry the Pick'em torch. Hopefully, my sidekick, Lefty, will join me. He's been AWOL quite a bit, but I'll write that off to vacation and it being the offseason.
The Games will begin for the week of Saturday, September 2nd. Picks will be due by 11:59:59 PM EST on Friday, September 1.
If you don't know how to play, you'll figure it out. I'll babysit for 2 weeks. After that...no mercy.

Seer,
What I will suggest is you take a look at the games scheduled for that day.
That's about all I can give you right now. Odds won't even come out for awhile. Here's a site I use for odds:

If you have access to some lines/odds, make picks on 10 games against whatever odds you have available at the time. Obviously, do not pick a game that has a 1_AA opponent. I can pretty much guarantee you the Cal/Tenn game will be the #1 game of the week so put the combined score for that game in.Saturday, September 2

Some of my (not so positive) observations of the game -
1) Why they felt the need to overhaul the kicking/punting portion of the game is beyond me. That was one area that needed no tinkering with.
2) They've actually allowed you the ability to block kicks/punts on an occasion. This concept was basically nonexistent in prior games. Except, and it happens to me about once a game, a computer controlled lineman on my team will break for the kicker, and dive right into him. He won't even go for the ball, he'll just go in like he's trying to close line him, and blatantly take him out, forcing a Roughing the Kicker penalty. It's fucking ridiculous.
3) Unless there's a way to turn it off (which I haven't discovered yet), the "tunnel visison" camera angle they use when you're receiving a punt or kickoff is absolutely horrid. You can only see what's directly in front of you. I'm pretty sure most players have a greater ability to see more of the field than this angle leads you to believe.
4) Passing has gotten easier and running has gotten more difficult.
5) Same logic holds true when you're on defense...stopping the run has gotten easier, and stopping the pass has become more difficult.
6) NCAA Football, no matter how allegedly "inferior" the gameplay is to Madden, will ALWAYS own Madden simply because it's COLLEGE FOOTBALL. The matchups, rivalries, bowl games, etc., will in no way, shape, or form EVER be less interesting than anything an NFL game can muster. The fact I can customize my own schedule with over 100 teams to choose from kicks much ass.
But hey, have fun with those intense "divisional rivalries." Riveting stuff.

I don't want to totally hijack this thread, but I have to respond to the NCAA 07 comments.
Skull,
1. The hit stick was on 06 too. It's just that the delay between pressing the stick and the actual "big hit" animation was so severe that it rendered it useless. It's much more responsive this year. (On 05, you just pressed L2 for a "big hit.")
2. The reason you can't scroll backwards this year is because the X button is assigned to the "jump the snap" feature. It's actually easier to get to the guy you want this year though. If you just hold circle, you can use the D pad or left stick to skip right to the player you want. It takes a little getting used to, but trust me, it's much better once you get used to it.
Mgo,
Are you playing on 360 or current gen? If you're on CG, then the O line slide protection will really help with your running game. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but you need to slide protect the opposite direction of your run. For example, if you're running a counter or toss to the left, slide protect to the right, and vice versa. If you're running a dive or slam up the middle, slide protect up (to spread your line and open up a wider hole).
If you're playing on 360, then I don't know what to tell you. It looks really pretty but has half the features of the CG version. Maybe you could still get a good deal on a trade-in at EB games.
If either of you guys want to delve deeper into this incredibly frustrating, yet highly addictive game, you can find me at the VG Sports forums.
And btw,
RACK Frisco on the Pick Em comeback!

On the 360 version, you press & hold the red B button (the one that cycles forward when just pressed) and then use the stick to cycle through the players manually. If you're using the Xbox or PS2 version, I can't help you.the_ouskull wrote:Nice.
I like the hit stick though. Madden's had it for about two years. Bout time NCAA caught up. Too bad so much other stuff about NCAA sucks. (Like not being able to scroll BACKWARDS on defense pre-snap.)
