I hope you're right...
I bet if they tried to hammer something out in the next couple of days, they could still have a season. I know Yzerman has been vocal in the fact that it's not too late. I bet he still wants to play and doesn't want to wait until next fall.

As long as they also have revenue sharing and luxery taxes included in the agreement.
Even though I am against the idea of a hard cap.
So much for the notion of capitalism and a free market.

Maybe people are ordering hockey sticks because the lockout will drag on for years and such items will become praised antiques on Ebay?Laxplayer wrote:They will play. I just got a phone call from a friend who is the president of a certain stick company and they've been getting orders.

Yeah, the NHL is going to agree to a $45 million hard cap after yanking a $42.5 million cap off the table.  Get your shoulders to tell your ass they miss your head.

That's the most popular number being thrown around by the reports coming from the supposed inside sources.
The one other proposal being mentioned is a sliding scale.
Starting a 42.5 and going up each year to 45 over the course of the term.
Hap, the players are not going to bend over any further.
They're going to meet tommorrow.

I hate Bettman just as much as Goodenow. Both of them need to be given their pink slips. Under the count's leadership, games on espn have gone from over 100 per season down to 40. They do a shit job of marketing the game and its players. Overexpansion has hurt the game as well, the league should have stoped with the 93 expansion which left the league with 26 teams.
Hopefully with announcement of the season, that rules changes designed to speed up the game and add scoring are added.

THAT I WILL RACK!!
As much as it might appear that I'm a fan of Goodenow, I'm not.
I support the people that play the game, not the suits.

Plans have been in place for teams to play a 28-game regular season starting March 1 and there's still time for that to happen if both sides can reach a deal this weekend.
28 games? That's only slightly better than no games. I'd rather they cut the playoffs short.

I was thinking more along the lines of 4, 5 game series. Also, go back to a game every other day no matter what.

PLAYERS UNION BROKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eat that Otis Spunkboy!!!!!!!
I also heard Goodenow is on the way OUT!!!!!
Bettemen did exactly what he set out to do.....get a cap to assure COST certainty(somewhat).
And otis, your capitalism remark is funny. If you treat the NHL as 30 separate businesses your logic is fine, but then they should be able to merge and have takeovers as well teams going out of business equaling loss of jobs, etc. Your logic doesn't work for the benefit of the NHL. You must treat it as ONE business operating(like the NFL) therefore a CAP is a necessity. Does that make sense?

I don't think they should screw with the playoffs. I do find it odd that a team could play 28 games in the regular season and if they play all the way to the finals playing 7 games in each series...they'd play the same number in the playoffs. I'd like to see the season at 30 or more games. If they can get the playoffs going by the end of April, they should be okay. I'm fine with 28 games but I think they could squeeze a few more in.
This would make for a freaky season. If you go on a 5-game losing streak, you're virtually dead. If any of the scrub teams can get to a hot start, maybe they sneak in. I wonder what happens with some of the unrestricted free agents that are out there also...Palffy, Schneider, etc. Will teams be jumping on them right after they sign a deal and try to get them in the fold by opening night? I don't think we'll see guys like Kovalchuk and Datsyuk because them being unsigned RFAs that signed in Europe. A shortened season will be nice but some teams will be a mess with some of the free agents all over the globe.

Not really. Have they signed the agreement, or is this yet another case of bored sportswriters?Otis wrote:$45 million cap agreed to according to the Hockey News.

Goodenow is no longer bargaining from a position of strength. Even if the NHL agrees to up the cap to $45 million (which they won't) you can bet the farm that linkage to revenues is back on the table.
Even if they come to an agreement in the next week, for the love of GOD cancel the season. There are waaaaaayyy to many fences to mend here, and a lot work needs to be done to re-package this league to fans.

I’m sure I’ll watch, but go ahead and etch JOKE on the Cup right now
44 or 42 games or whatever it was in '95 wasn't that much better. It'll still take 16 wins to win the Cup though. I'd much rather have this goofy season than not having it at all.
Fingers crossed that these guys can take care of business today...

Of course, it would be nice that they can reach for an agreement but I hope the season remains cancelled. Like Hap said, there will be shitloads of work and marketing to be accomplishede to bring back the fans to the game. I'm not all convinced the playoffs card will be all enough.

Looks like I'm right on this one:
On Saturday, league sources told TSN that the NHL may be prepared to make another offer to the players, but that it would contain only "cosmetic" changes to the $42.5 million dollar deal that was presented as a "final offer" to the players on Tuesday night.
