Mack Brown whining again...

Post by M2 »

Mack Brown blames new clock rules for loss to OSU

He can't stop simply because he has the whiniest voice in sports. The only time I can stomach hearing him is when he's explaining losing.

In his press conference today, he alluded to the "credit" Texas and Ohio State "deserve" for playing a "high risk-reward" OOC game (as opposed to Texas' other OOC games against North Texas, Rice and Sam Houston State).

If Mack Brown deserves credit for playing this game, does he deserve equal blame for chickening-out of scheduled games against Hawaii (the year after they went 10-2) and Utah (when they still had Urban Meyer)?

Brown prefers to play only patsies in OOC games, but it would have been too embarrassing to try to buy his way out of playing the 2-game series against tOSU. It was certainly entertaining, but unfortunately Mack Brown is never going to schedule an OOC game against a perennial top-10 team again for the remainder of his stay in Austin.

He didn't blame the loss on the clock, dipshit.

He said it hurt Texas' chances to mount a comeback, which is exactly what "a ticking clock" does when you're "running out of time."

Thanks for making my point, in a Missouri kinda way... yet you didn't even know you did it.

Sorry, but they were down 17 points with 6 minutes left. The only thing the rule added was probably about 30 seconds. The clock starts on the kickoff (4-5 seconds, tops) and then at the ready for play on the first play of the drive (25 seconds TOPS). A grand total of 30 seconds.

He didn't say there should have been more time than 6 minutes. He said that with 6 minutes they didn't have time to do anything. Which is untrue in and of itself - he didn't have time to do anything because his team was outplayed and outclassed. Six minutes is plenty of time to get something done. They did nothing. He can blame his own players' inability to protect the ball for this loss, and their inability to stop Ohio State on that crucial late drive.

Much as I hate defending anything puke orange, Brown didn't blame the loss on the clock. I'm sure someone down in TROTS will be glad to continue this argument with you, though.

The way he phrased it suggests he thinks they could have comeback under the old rules, and that the new rules (shaving all of 30 seconds off the clock) made that impossible. He's a used car salesman. Plain and simple.

That being said, yes the rules stink. He should have just said he doesn't like them and spoke in generalities. By saying "it didn't give us a chance to do anything" it comes off as blaming the new rules.

I'd come a lot closer to agreeing with that statement than your original premise.

The rule sucks, point well taken, and Brown's right to be frustrated with it after the weekend. It wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome, but I'd be pissed all the same to not even have the opportunity to flail away aimlessly.

He is a used car salesmen, though. You're spot-on there.

Don't you mean the SECOND whiniest voice in sports...? I mean, assuming that we can consider anything you post "sports related."

The new rules were known before the first game of the 2006 season. Any coach who whines about it in the context of a specific game needs to take a step back and appreciate how it makes them look.

There is a time and place for coaches to question the rules. The day after a bad outcome shouldn't be one of them.

How about before beating the crap out of UNT.
How about after beating the crap out of UNT
How about before losing to tOSU
How about after losing to tOSU

That is about how much Mack has complained about the new rule.

Mack said from the beginning that he didn't like the new clock rules. He was against it from the start. Then some local fishrap hack asks him how he feels about it after the game. He said the same thing he has stated from the get go. I don't think this is whinning. He stated a matter of opinion; an opinion that hasn't changed.

Trying my damnest not to dfend m2, but I'll at least agree... Mack's whining. He lost the game and took out a bit of his furstrations via a soundbite regarding the new clock rules. He bitched 'bout 'em. Not sure what your definition of whining is, but that pretty well fits mine.

Where m2's wrong is that he did NOT blame the loss on the clock. He just pussied up and whined about it afterwards.

Had they been getting dickraped 35-0 with 15 minutes left, it would've been a much closer game.

Horrible rule change, no doubt, but Mack shouldn't be talking about falling behind with six minutes left and then having no time left to mount a comeback.

Dude, if it weren't for a ridiculous blown call by the refs your team gets shut out. You didn't score a point in the second half.

Still though, yeah, what a horrible new rule change. Keep the telecast length the same with all the tv commercials/down time but shorten the actual game time on the field?

I don't think Mack was really whining about the loss in this quote - it's really taken out of context given the outcome.

That said, Mack is smart enough to know that it would be taken out of context and showed poor judgement making the statement.

Brown said the game was 22 minutes shorter. Obviously, that is elapsed time of the game, not clock time. Due to the rule changes, I'd guess maybe 2 minutes or so is shorter of actual clock.

Had nothing to do with the outcome of this game. I don't think he thought it did either, but his statements, in the context they were reported, made it sound that way.
