"Ohhh-lay, Ole, Ole, Oh-laaaay, Ohhh-lay, Ohhh-lay."
Of the top six players who qualified for the team, four of them did not win a match. The biggest flop was Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who went 0-4-1 and has won only one match in his last two Ryder Cups.
Furyk had said the Americans looked "constipated" when they played at the Ryder Cup, and that included him. Even after a 20-foot birdie putt to halve the 14th hole, Furyk looked uptight.

The Americans talked about having fun for a chance, and they sure did -- until the matches started.

The Ryder Cup is to golf what the NFL Superstars competition was to the NFL. Irrelevant and a waste of time. Seriously, golf a team sport. Bwaa.

I'd still take Tiger or Lefty over Sergio in a major.

Let him have his moment. This is the Euros' chance to be better at us in...something. Sure, it's a glorified exhibition and meaningless to most Americans, but hey, it's "something," nonetheless.

One other thing. When you win an international sport by combining the best of every country in the universe against a single country, you really ought let your head get too swelled up. Infact, the format pretty much say, bode US.

Despite this, losing to the rest combined universe at golf is nearly as shameful as it is when we lose in international competition at basketball.

Is there a single fukking sport, real sport that is, one that uses something other than an animal carcass as a ball, that any one country might take on the rest of the planet and have a chance? We do it in golf. We could do it in american football. We used to be able to do it in basketball and baseball.

I seriously doubt there is any country out there dominant enough in something played internationally, that they would eventry to do this.

Props to the Euros on a successful defense of the Cup once again...I didn't think the Americans stood a chance from the get-go.

Congrats nish, I guess. You fukkers invented the damn sport. What say next time around we make it the UK vs everybody else. Kinda disappointed, btw with the rehashed sig. You could atleast alter it a little this year.

Yeah, the US just couldn't overcome that powerhouse tandem of Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen, eh? And Ernie Els...he was just toooooo much for the Americans.

And remember all those Ryder Cups of years gone by...you know, when Gary Player, Steve Elkington, and **Insert name of non-Euro or American player here** ruled the planet?

Yeah, I don't remember that, either.

One country had several times the population base to draw from, so they changed the format to make it more fair...which has now tilted the scales the other way.

It was UK and Ireland, originally.

All this talk of the Ryder Cup being an 'exhibition' is bullshit. In any case, is one of the few sports in the world which Americans and the rest of the world pursue with the same interest. Ergo, it's the only sporting competition in the world where America and Europe have a level playing field.

There's tennis, of course, but that's shit.

And as golf continues to grow in Europe, you will see scores get even more lopsided. It is only a matter of time before world class players start comming out of the former Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries. When that happens, you might see the Euros score 20+ points.

In...the Euros outplayed the Americans, understatement of the week. I didn't like Tom Lehman's decision to limit Taylor and Wetterich to one match on Friday and Saturday before the Sunday singles. Patriotisim aside, glad to see Darren Clarke enjoy a well earned victory in Ireland after all he's been through.

For the most part, yes...to an extent, no.

The Euro team draws from a larger population base, but then again, by this standard of "fairness," any equal opportunity in the Olympics is out the window. But also, the courses they tend to play events like this on generally give a slight advantage to the Euros. Almost all of the courses that the American PGA plays on are what could be called "American-style" courses(go figure). While golf was invented in Scotland, it flourished to what it is today in the United States. American-style courses tend to favor the bigger hitters, while as a general rule, European courses tend to favor the smart player. When the US PGA decides to play a Major and make it tough, they groom the course to more of a Euro style course, the catch being that they only do it 3 times a year(and it's arguable whether Augusta is set up in a particularly classic "Euro style" -- it's more of a really difficult American style course).

So, American golf tends to favor Bomb and Gouge players(sup every freaking rookie on the US PGA Tour), which is a style of play that doesn't lend itself particularly well to playing European style courses.

Sure, the US PGA could start using more American style courses for the Ryder, but that would defy the tradition, and wouldn't be in the spirit of good sportsmanship. And despite what the rest of the world may believe, there's a significant percentage of the American sporting public(particularly the golfers) that still place sportsmanship over winning and losing.

So while the Euro team may absolutely PWN the American team, it shoulod be kept in mind that the Americans are playing on courses that their opponents are, as a general rule, a little more suited for the required style of play.

Yeah...that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

If they wanted to stand by tradition, shouldn't it be US vs Britian/ireland? that was how they did it for over 50 years.

Oh I forgot. Britain and Ireland sucked so much that they had to expand the field to include all of Europe. to help "Level" the playing field.

I suppose if the US had continued to dominate they'd just make it US vs the rest of the world, hmmm?

That's called the President's Cup. USA v Everyone Else Not In Europe. Oddly enough, the US has done better in the President's Cup than in the Ryder Cup the last 10 years.

FYI, the K Club is supposed to be one of the more American-style courses in Europe.

It is. In fact the course was designed by none other than Arnold Palmer. Perhaps Dins was confusing the Palmer Course with the K Club's other more "European" course, the The Smurfit Course, home of the The Smurfit Kappa European Open?

God knows the sound of Renton Laidlaw's voice can have that kind of effect on a golfing man.

That being said, this beatdown has nothing to do with wether or not the courses are too "European" and everything to do with the wealth of talent on the other side of the pond. That's why I saw your sig bet for the sucker bet that it was and wanted no part of it.

yes - ask any glof club anywhere on the planet. "team" golf pre-dates "Tournment" golf. The very notion of someone not being a club member, and competing in the 'club championship' led to an 'open' competition. While these events were for the grabbing of BODE within the clubhouse, they were really eliminators to see who would be the best players to represent the club against the club just over the loch.

Current holders? Wales!!!

Let's be honest, if it doesn't take place in a time zone that is handy for you guys to watch, it doesn't really 'count'.
