ASU/USC

Post by MgoBlue-LightSpecial »

Can someone fill me in on what happened here?

I saw ASU punting down by 7 with about 1:30 left on 4th down deep in their own territory. Had to step out for a second, came back, and saw SC killing the clock with a kneel down. Why didn't ASU go for it on 4th? Did they have all three timeouts? I'm assuming they planned on stopping SC on three plays and calling timeouts on each stop. I'm guessing that plan failed and SC picked up a first down or two on their ensuing possession.

Mgo, a truly stupid decision by ASU's coach, is what happened. He didn't take into account the NCAA's New Math this season, which keeps shortening the ends of games...

1:45 left, fourth and 22, from his own 30 or thereabouts.

Scenario I: Go for it? If you convert, you're still alive. If you don't get it, it's basically game over. USC has the ball on your 30, with only a little over a minute to go.

Scenario II: Punt? You use your two remaining time outs, hope for a quick three and out by your D and then you hope to force a punt so that you get the ball back...with maybe 20 seconds left, somewhere around your own twenty yard line.

Okay, under the best of circumstances you still have to go for it there since you're down by 7. A FG won't help you so even if you get the three and out the best you can hope for there is to have the ball deep in your own territory, with no time outs left. Twenty seconds left, no time outs, and you gotta go 80 yards on USC's D.

So, what's this guy do? This guy, he opted for Scenario II anyway. Problem is, he didn't do his math too well. Even though ASU spent their final two time outs to stop the clock USC was still able to run out the clock without having to punt simply by taking their time in getting up from the pile after each running play.

The clock ran out before USC was ever forced to punt. The new rule wiped out the remaining time...players unpile...ref marks spot, blows whistle...tick tick tick...poof...game over.

Dunno what the ASU coach was thinking there.

Oh, and btw, once again, this new "game shortening" rule sucks ass. I do NOT want 12 fewer plays per game. I want fewer commercials and less down time between plays. More product, less fill time.

Instead, nope, we get the same amount of network driven inanities and less of the actual game product.
