Bullshit, marty. Maybe in your paranoid world peopel use them for doing bad shit, but in the world of normal people with families and kids it's a way to make sure kids aren't getting into any trouble on the internet, especially if they have friends over all the time who are less than trustworthy.

I dl'ed and installed a trial keystroke program last night. Told my kid today to let all his friends know that if I want to, I can see everything they do on all computers in my network. He had an attitude like "yeah right", So I told him everywhere he surfed to the night before, everything he did. His eyes opened wide like saucers while I explained to him that I was not goiing to be spying on him, but if the system alerts me to any unusual activity, I will be checking on it, and he should let all his pals know that too in case they try to get away with crap here they aren't allowed to at their house.

I got a quiet and respectful "yes sir" as a reply. I don't think I'll be needing this program anymore. :)

Network Bots? Do tell. I've used web page bots to deter spammers, but home network bots is news to me.

That computer has no admin privileges. programs cannot be installed, and they can't access the K.L. files.

If you know about them, how about sharing the knowledge?

I do spend time with my buddy and his stepdaughter. Over there, they have this crazy fucking policy...they call it "parenting."

See, if she wants to use the computer, she has to use the one in the living room, and only when there's an adult with a full view of the moniter, or at least with an adult in the adjacent room, who can look over her shoulder at least every couple of minutes. It's not that they don't trust the daughter, they just don't trust the other few hundred million people online.

No wonder this country is going to hell in a handbasket -- everyone wants automated child-rearing. Who the fuck did you think was going to supervise the kid when you had it?

Damn, you don't check on the kids for a day and the whole house goes to shit.

First of all, the Tech forum is mainly here to help people so while a quick comment on each other's sexual or political preferences sandwiched in between some valid comments are tolerated, when a whole topic is 90% bs and 10% content I will have to start deleting comments or threads which is what I did with your random comments. Also if everyone is so concerned about family matters and raising kids, maybe there needs to be a 'parenting' forum.

Second, While I have told MB that I think there could be other ways to accomplish the monitoring of his kids, he is welcome to do as he likes. Many companies use Keyloggers to investigate problems out there and valid companies do release software that would make it hard for the kids to actually edit the text and not have back doors in them.

My recommendation has always been, Protect your network with a router/firewall, protect the PC with a firewall and reduced privilages for the kids and then I'd probably recommend subscribing to some blocking service that will block common adult sites and services, but this isn't a foulproof solution and whats worse is that filtering the internet also effects your other computers. On top of that, its not a cheap solution.

I don't have any kids, but I do know that I cerainly broke every rule at one time or another that my parents set. I had friends over when they weren't supposed to be. I watched TV when I wasn't supposed to, and I most definately visited sites I was not supposed to. I'm not trying to brag or say that I'm the badest mofo around (which I am), but I'm saying that just because kids act one way when you are around, doesn't mean that there aren't 10 kids you wouldn't approve of in your house when you aren't home. Basically I'm saying that you are all bad parents and that if you were good parents, you wouldn't have any kids and wouldn't be parents at all, because after all, what kind of sick person would bring kids into this sick perverted world.

I have a firewall, router etc. It works well. I get no problems coming in from the outside.

However I travel more than I like to, and I just want something else to make the network safe from within, for exactly the reasons you set out.

Have you ever heard of network bot traps? That's a new one on me.

Also, what do you use to monitor network traffic at work? wouldn't that work just as well for a home network? You've mentioned sniffers before, but I've never worked as a network admin before, so I really don't know about all the tools used to manage one.

keystrokeloggers, sniffers, log files. Having never used any of them, I'll use whatever works to keep things running smooth.

I'll have to check with my nephew's friends and get back to you on what they use to manipulate and control their parents...that shouldn't cost me more than say, $250 dollars and mowing their grass for a month or two...they already get better weed and hookers than I, so that's out.

I've never really heard of them before last week. It looks like a company that started sometime in the past 5 years. The first PR announcement I read was from 2003 about a product release. They do have a variety of products that are aimed at small and medium business. Seems like a smaller company. Not sure where their quality rates since I haven't heard too much about them. They do have some fairly interesting products that can loadbalance, or that have modem backup capability and abviously the features that could be used by parents seem fairly good.
