Under the new collective bargaining agreement, players may begin to declare themselves free agents starting today. (28 October). For fifteen days after the filing period begins, the free agent's former club is the only tam that can contact him. After that, any club can contact the free agents. Open season begins on 12 November.
If a player signs with any team (whether his old team or a new team) after the fifteen day filing period ends, he gets an automatic "no trade" through 15 June. If he signs with his old team before the end of the filing period, he doesn't get a no-trade.
The next two weeks should be pretty interesting.

Nomar should go back to boston. Soriano should go to SF take over Bonds contract or to Philly to load up that lineup even more.
Schmidt is gonna land on the Mets or one of the Sox, Pettite is gonna go back to Yankees. If I were A-rod I'd want a trade to a smaller market team, take the media/fans backlashing but he can try to start over with less pressure. Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland will all sign at least one big named player.
