Just last spring, Marshawn came close to the same fate, as somebody fired into the backseat of his car in front of Oakland Tech as he was getting ready to attend his sisters graduation.
Very sad.

Don't get it twisted Skull, I'd be just as un-shocked if I heard a player from: USC, Florida St, OU, tO$U, <insert football factory school here> had been shot and killed.the_ouskull wrote:Is it a sad commentary that, with him playing for Miami, none of us are shocked that this happened. I mean, it's always sad, but is anybody TRULY suprised?

"Our staff is going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,'' Crean said in a statement. "We fully expect our student-athletes to accept the responsibilities academically, athletically and socially that come with representing one of the top programs in college basketball history."
Thats taking it a little far.Shine wrote:Don't get it twisted Skull, I'd be just as un-shocked if I heard a player from: USC, Florida St, OU, tO$U, <insert football factory school here> had been shot and killed.
Comparing Miami of late to any other university is unfair. It would be like "I wouldn't be shocked if IU fired another basketball coach" or "I wouldn't be surprised if IU provided another moron to lead the NCAA."
Lets see, how many schools
got in a knock down drag out brawl on the field this year?
got in a fight while stomping on another teams logo?
got in a fight after last years bowl game?
created a rap song about gang bangs, etc....?
And how many schools fostered this atmosphere by not really punishing their players.
Lose your "IU still sucks at football" angst for a second and realize that Miami is a few steps below everyone else.

Is it unfair and is Miami really below everyone else???Sky wrote: Comparing Miami of late to any other university is unfair.
realize that Miami is a few steps below everyone else.
- the same day of the Miami/FIU fight there was an on field fracas between HOLY CROSS and DARTMOUTH.
- at NORTHERN COLORADO a punter was attacked and stabbed by his own teammate.
- in 04/05 TENNESSEE had 20 off-field incidents which included assualt charges.
- a HARVARD football player was kicked off the team for breaking into his girlfriends dorm and hitting her.
- CALIFORNIA player pleads no contest to misdemeanor for a bar fight.
- SAN JOSE STATE has a player jailed on robbery charges, amongst 13 other charges.
- LOUISVILLE suspends two players for shooting a woman with a paintball gun.
- MICHIGAN has a player charged with assualting his girlfriend.
- an ARIZONA STATE player shoots and kills a former player.
- a USC player is arrested on rape charges.
- two IOWA STATE players charged with burglary.
- SOUTH CAROLINA had 9 players arrested in one off-season.
And on, and on, and on, and on.
So yeah, I stand by my claim that hearing a player was shot from ANY school wouldn't shock me. Even in hoops there were 5 players shot from DUQUESNE!!!
Lose your "Miami is the worst program ever" delusion for a second and realize that criminal behavior is everywhere in college sports these days.

I have not rang in on this subject because I know all to well what it is like to lose a kid like this. When Cole Pittman died it affected me profoundly, mostly because I actually knew him, but also because I saw how it affected his family. To be honest when I saw this young man's mom fall down in agony over the loss of her son I almost broke down myself. I can't imagine losing one of my son in that fashon.
I feel for his family, friends, and teammates who must finish the season still.
As for the University of Miami, I won't say a thing, I know what happens in Austin and this could easily have been a Texas player. Hell how far is USC from Watts or Compton? Ann Arbor and Columbus are not bad places but they ain't Provo Utah either. I think all of us need to keep things in perspective because realistically this could have happened anywhere.

I think it is. Every team has their issues but Miami has set the bar this year.Shine wrote:[Is it unfair and is Miami really below everyone else???
-Numerous players suspended before the season even started
-FIU brawl
-Miami player is shot in the ass, while ANOTHER Miami player returns gun fire at the get away car.
-Now a Miami player is shot and killed, who just happens to house an AK-47 in his apartment.
It seems to me that it is fairly obvious that the south Florida culture is playing a role here. If not, it is still hard to deny that Miami is certainly below all other programs in the country.

OK, so now you are changing your tune and comparing individual events. Did you do any research into Miami players and their arrests?Shine wrote:So yeah, I stand by my claim that hearing a player was shot from ANY school wouldn't shock me. Even in hoops there were 5 players shot from DUQUESNE!!!
Lose your "Miami is the worst program ever" delusion for a second and realize that criminal behavior is everywhere in college sports these days.
Timeline of past Miami trouble,a sampling of incidents on and off the field involving the football program at the University of Miami:
So yeah, it really looks like you are comparing apples to apples. I would say, excluding the fights and the rap song, Miami is on par with everyone else. These absurd actions are what really set them apart. Please don't compare Tressel, Stoops, Weiss, Carrol, or even Bowden to the leadership at Miami. They are in a class all their own.•December 1986-January 1987: Following its first-ever undefeated regular season in 1986, Miami is selected to face Penn State in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl at Tempe, Ariz. In contrast to the Nittany Lions, who attended team functions in jackets and ties, Miami players spent most of the week wearing camouflage fatigues and walked out of a midweek function attended by both teams. This was probably the first time Miami began to be perceived as a "renegade" program.
•October 1988: In the first of three meetings with Notre Dame, later billed as "Catholics vs. Convicts," Miami and Notre Dame players engage in a pregame shoving match in the tunnel outside the teams' locker rooms at Notre Dame Stadium.
•December 1995: The NCAA places Miami on three years' probation, issues a postseason ban for 1995 and cuts scholarships for the next two years for violations that include an academic adviser helping 57 football players improperly receive federal grants.
•December 2000: Players from Miami and Florida — police reports say 10 to 15; eyewitnesses say closer to 40 — clash on the streets of New Orleans in the days leading to their meeting in the Sugar Bowl. No charges were filed by police.
•February 2004: Linebacker Willie Williams was one of the nation's most-prized recruits at Carol City High in Miami. The same day he signed his letter of intent with the Hurricanes, the Alachua County (Fla.) State Attorney announced Williams was being investigated for three criminal complaints stemming from a recruiting visit to the University of Florida in January. Also, a record showing 10 arrests as a juvenile, including on felony burglary charges, came to light. After months of deliberations, Miami decided to admit Williams — with conditions. He suffered an injury in practice in August 2004 and was redshirted as a freshman. He played in 10 games in 2005 but left the program this summer.
•July 11, 2004: Cornerback Antrel Rolle is arrested and charged with a felony, battery on a police officer, in connection with an early-morning incident in Coconut Grove, Fla. Rolle is suspended indefinitely. Prosecutors later decide not to pursue the case, citing problems with evidence. Rolle is reinstated.
•November 2005: A rap song with sexually explicit lyrics, performed by a group called Seventh Floor Crew, surfaces on the Internet. Coach Larry Coker confirms that Miami football players are members of the group, which recorded the song two years earlier. Athletics director Paul Dee, saying the matter would be handled internally, noted that the song was performed in private and never was intended for distribution.
•Dec. 30, 2005: Several Miami players fight with LSU players following the Tigers' 40-3 win at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, a brawl that quickly escalated into a melee in the tunnel leading from the field and had Georgia State Patrol officers intervening.
•July 21, 2006: Miami player Willie Cooper suffers superficial wounds to his buttocks after he is shot outside his residence near campus in what players contend was a robbery attempt. Safety Brandon Meriweather, one of those suspended for Saturday's brawl, returns fire at the alleged assailants. Police say he acted legally, noting Meriweather had a permit for the weapon. Three days later, coach Larry Coker says he would discourage players from having guns. "I don't really want our players to have firearms. I'd rather they would dial 911 to come and handle those type of problems," he said.
•Aug. 27, 2006: Wide receiver Ryan Moore, sent home from the Peach Bowl for violating team rules, is suspended for the first two games of 2006 for other violations. The Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office says it expects to charge Moore this week with misdemeanors stemming from an Aug. 26 fight with a woman. Moore hasn't played this season.
•Sept. 16, 2006: Shortly before the game at Louisville, virtually the entire Hurricanes' roster jumps on the Cardinals logo at midfield — an act widely viewed as a taunting gesture. Miami loses 31-7. Afterward, several Miami players chide teammates for their involvement in that incident.
•Oct. 14, 2006: A bench-clearing brawl breaks out among players on the field during the third quarter of a game against Florida International at the Orange Bowl. A total of 13 players are ejected after police and stadium security help break up the five-minute melee. TV cameras catch one Miami player wielding his helmet as a weapon and an injured FIU player swinging his crutches.

And Sky I'm not chaning anything you're just lacking comprehension. I stand by my original take that if I were to hear of a player being shot and killed from ANY school it wouldn't surprise me. All those events I listed just show the abundance of criminal behavior across the landscape of college athletics. I didn't even mention the Baylor scandal or the USC point guard who was shot and killed.

And therein lies the difference between Miami and other programs.
At...oh, say...any other school, incedents like the above get you suspended/expelled. At Miami, it moves you up the depth chart.
Fostering that "gangsta mentality" for recruitng purposes is all well and good...until it isn't.
I got 99 problems but the 'vid ain't one

Scandal and contraversy aside, a college kid being shot and killed is still a tragedy. It's a hard stigma to shake being a player at Miami and not be connected with something negative. He might look the part of a 'gangsta' but it sounded like he was a pretty good guy. Stereotypes are still an unfortunate part of the way we judge other people. I don't think it's impossible for there to be some guys on Miami's football team who are of good character. It's too easy to assume all players on that program are linked to gangs and criminal activity. Miami doesn't do themselves any favors by not going away from the renegade image and then seeing stuff like this year with the fight on the field and the past they've had. It's still speculation on what happened that night and how it happened...bottom line, a young man who seemed to have a bright future in football or whatever is dead. Take the name and the face away, that's a sad story any time you hear it.

Bingo!
For a guy that likes fucking his sister... you're a pretty smart guy.
Good job, Shoalzie!
You've got a good head on your shoulders... just stay as far away from family reunions as you can.
