As a PAC10 homer and an SEC hater, I still can't abide.

Although I believe the bottom third of the PAC would mop the floor with the bottom third of the SEC, the top third of the SEC is about the baddestass conference representation I've seen in a few years.

I just can't say for certain that the best SEC teams are really all that great this year. Again, it's the Big East Syndrome all over again.

Florida...Auburn...LSU...Tennessee...

All these teams are presumed to be great, based on what?? Really, there's no big difference in the SEC and Big East scenarios: Build great records by having loads of pre-programmed wins and then the rest is just conference stuff.

8-4 home-away schedules, no OOC tests (except for Cal at Tennessee) and wins over similarly untested yet highly ranked fellow conference teams.

Sounds awfully familiar to the Big East to me.

My gut still says the SEC would wipe the floor with the Big East based on the lack of athletes in the Big East but nonetheless the SEC's done nothing on the field this season to prove it. They're getting by on perception based on reputation, and that's it.

Looking at the SEC, you've only got two dominating units: the LSU defense and the Arkansas rushing attack.

Nonetheless, and lacking any other proofs, we're all so willing to continually drop a merry-go-round of four or five SEC teams into our Top 15 and it all seems so P. T. Barnum/H.L. Mencken to me...

Outside of Cal shitting their pants in fear of playing at Neyland, the Pac 10 has looked pretty solid this year. Furd is your truly sole doormat. From USC, all the way down to Washington, each of those 9 teams have been pretty competitive this year.

But still, among the SEC, Pac 10, ACC, Big 10 and...uhh, Big 12, I don't think there are giant gaps in speed and talent at any of the teams in these conferences. The heavy hitters from each of these conferences could beat each other on any given day. Although I'm guilty of it, this conference debate stuff is totally worthless. Any of these conferences could go winless in bowls, or undefeated, just as easily. I've seen it happen in the Big Ten. It's all pretty fucking equal.

Agree completely with Mgo's take...

I'll never argue that the Pac 10 is the dominant conference but I'll also never concede that they're as weak as a lot of you people try to make 'em out to be. I'll also never concede that the SEC is always the best conference just by default.

I need to see it on the field and between the conferences, period.

Yep, without Arkansas' stud tailback (getting 130+ yards per game and 6.4 yards per carry) or their starting quarterback, they lost to USC big. Not excusing it but still....

LSU is gonna smoke them at the end of the year anyway.

Arkansas had their starting QB. Mustaine was there too. They had both QBs available.

McFadden wasn't there but his absence doesn't account for Arkansas giving up 50 points at home and his absence isn't going to account for a 36 point deficit...

USC had people hurt too.

Oh, don't get me wrong -- there's few things more annoying than SEC Ballsucking Homers' perennial claim...no, assumption of BODE, but from what I've seen, they actually have a modicum of it.

But Bowl Season will tell the tale.

I should have said Ark hadn't found their starting QB yet. Johnson was the QB back then and he just wasn't very good at all. The USC beating prob was a blessing for Ark.

My point was the team that USC blew out is not the same team that smoked Tenn last weekend.

When a PAC10/Big10/Most Conferences team improves through the course of a season, it's generally because of hard work, adressing their weak points, and in general just learning their system a little better.

When an SEC team improves, it's usually due to evolution.

in all honesty.... McFadden was there and did play in the USC game, he lead Arkansas in rushing attempts but the Hogs were trying to throw the ball to keep up with USC and the Trojans had shut their running game down early in the game.

Mustain also played but didnt come on til the 4th quarter.

Mustain didnt start last week vs Tennessee either and he had more attempts, completions and yards vs USC than he did vs Tennessee

You also have to consider that USC used pretty much an all true freshman tail back comittee in that game as Chanucey Washington (who was seeing his first action since a game at Auburn in 2003) still had a pulled hamstring and it was Booty who was making his first start, Arkansas starter had startered or played in nearly every game last year
