Probably a good idea to get it out of the way. I'm surprised Weis would do it in consecutive years.

I wouldn't have done it, but Weis did it as a tribute to the senior class. Or if he's that settled on the green jerseys, why not just make them our regular home jerseys like Devine did?

In any event, we couldn't do it next week since it's a roadie and we'll be wearing white. We'll probably also be the designated road team in our bowl game, which eliminates the possibility for it there as well (unless we wind up in the Gator Bowl, in which case the green jerseys would be anticlimatic, to put it mildly).

Shoulda trotted 'em out for the Michigan game. This year's home schedule, that was the one.

Guess they wanted to make sure that this time the greenies were seen during a victory.

Bump to point out that it appears we had the chance to bust out the green jerseys in a bowl game after all. I have no doubt that LSU will be the designated home team in the Sugar Bowl, but IIRC, LSU wears white all the time.

Of course, no one saw the USC loss to UCLA coming, which ultimately opened the door to this matchup. Without that game, this matchup doesn't happen.

The greenies need to be reserved for games in South Bend. Trotting them out in front of a mostly pro LSU crowd in the Superdome would be pointless. Most of the building will just laugh.

They should only be used in rivalry games at home, and only very sparingly, as a means to jumpstart the players and the crowd before an enormous home game that ND just has to have.

Last year's USC game, that was an epic time for 'em. I about barfed when ND came roaring out of the tunnel in those greenies and the place went berserk. Couldn't believe (well, yes I could) that they were pulling that card on us again. Now, pulling the same card against Army?

Diminishes the whole effect. Cheapens it for next time. Bad move.

Make no mistake about it: ND will be better represented at the Sugar Bowl than most on this board think. Ever been to a ND-USC game at the Coliseum? If so, you know what I mean. I made it to one, and I'd have to say the crowd was pretty close to 50-50 (in fairness, that was in 1990, sort of your Dark Ages, so maybe that wasn't a fair representation).

Having said all of that, now that the opponent is LSU, LSUfan will probably scarf up the majority of the tickets to this game. If our opponent had been Florida, we'd have a pretty good shot at close to 50-50.

The green jerseys were our home jerseys from the '77 USC game until the end of the Devine era. I kind of liked that.

During the Leahy era, the green jerseys were ND's road jerseys (they wore blue at home), but the NCAA wouldn't permit that today.

Don't you like it best though when they only use 'em as a sneak attack, like Belushi with the Germans at Pearl Harbor?

I'll grant you, that is cool, but Gerry Faust totally fucked it up on one occasion.

1985, vs. USC. ND takes the field in the traditional blue jerseys, then proceeds to build a 28-3 halftime lead. In the second half, and already up by 25, the team comes out in green jerseys. :? Talk about anticlimatic.

Then again, if he could have coached every game against Ted Tollner, he'd probably still have the ND job if he wanted it.

Ted Tollner literally had no lower jaw, plus he had a severe butt chin. He looked like he swallowed his own face.

Actually, dude looked like Don Knotts as Mr Limpet.

The Ted Tollner Years, wooo boy. The Paul Hackett Years!!?? Inspiring shit. Larry Smith was a freaking deity in comparison and even he fairly well defined "milquetoast".

And he coached like Don Knotts as Barney Fife.

Sorry, that one was just a little too obvious to pass up.

I can only imagine a Ted Tollner fire and brimstone locker room speech to rally the troops...

Image

"Umm, look guys, okay, umm, these are called testicles, okay? You, know, 'balls'. Ummm, you guys need to, ummm, grow a pair right away, okay, ummm, if you're going to beat that other team, okay?"
