Tressel skips vote

Post by Bobby42 »

Ohio State's Jim Tressel did not vote in the USA Today coaches' poll to avoid the perception of a conflict of interest, a move the newspaper said could jeopardize his future in the selection process.

"We are excited to play in the BCS title game against a tremendous opponent," Tressel said in a statement. "After consultation with my director of athletics, Gene Smith, and based upon our unique position in the BCS standings, I believe it is only fair that we not participate in the final poll."

Monte Lorell, USA Today's managing editor for sports, said Sunday in a statement, "We are disappointed with coach Tressel's decision, but our oversight role does not grant us authority to compel his participation. The agreement with the American Football Coaches Association obligates the panel of coaches to disclose final regular season ballots, without exception.

"Coach Tressel's future involvement in the poll will be part of our annual review with AFCA executive director Grant Teaff."

The Gators and Wolverines are vying for a spot in the BCS Championship Game opposite No. 1 Ohio State on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

Teaff, a former coach, said Tressel's decision was "not something that we would like to have happen, but it's kind of an unusual circumstance."

Until last year, the coaches' ballots were not made public. Now, the final regular-season ballots are released.

"It's just a tough situation," Teaff said.
Tress must be scared shitless.

I heard this earlier today.

Not sure how I feel about this really. I don't really think I mind it. I think JT is a stand up cat.

The douche in the Harris Poll that voted UF #1 on the other hand should lose his credentials.

Exactly how would it be a conflict of interest for a coach to vote in the coaches' poll? What's so different this time?

Need more info. Tress is believed to be the only one to abstain on the 63-coach board that makes up the USA Today poll. Maybe he's trying to be PC. I don't see a COI either.

here is the biggest point:

would Michigan be #2 if he voted for them 2nd? Or would his vote not matter in the end? If the voting is too close, and a Michigan #2 vote would of kept them #2 in bcs, then jim fucked his conference and michigan.

if it doesnt make a difference, then he just pussied out on the vote, nothing more.

That's what's different.

Another shining example of the "system."

Expect JT's vote to set the trend, for coaches of teams who are already in the MNC.

He's got to be kidding.

I mean, outside of m2 and Ken, nobody can possibly be that fucking stupid, right?

Are we living in the same dimension as these asshats?

Seriously.

Perhaps he didn't want to give any team he might face some locker room motivation.

Say he voted florida #3 or 4, and they end up 2. Newspapers then flash the headline "OS coach doesn't think FL is good enough" or "Ohio State coach thinks Florida is not championship calibre"

Slap that shit on the locker door of every player before the game, and you've got a nice motivator.

RF, if it wasn't a COI before it doesn't become one now either, just because the votes are now made public. Maybe it could be argued that making his vote public could be unwise as it could end up being bulletin board fodder for somebody but all coaches now face that possibilty yet they all still voted and it's still not the same thing as a COI anyway.

Coming from Scoop Jackson, I put a lot of faith into that argument. He is right, Tressel is a poor excuse for a human being. I'm just glad someone like Jackson took the time to address our lowly CFB coach.

If JT had voted UM #3 or #4, imagine what Lloyd would have said then.

It's the guy's vote. He's allowed to abstain, and his reasons for doing so seem honorable.

I actually agree with Tressel on this. He should stay away from voting for quite a few reasons. It is a conflict of interest.

For sure!!!

I don't really have a problem with it. I'm actually surprised that so many do.

no they didn't but you know Woody would have done that...hell he might have created a 118th spot just for them...

by the way excellent show of class by Lloyd and Tress on the awards show..I thought they both handled the tricky subject of voting when brought up although Lloyd was candid when he said he voted Michigan #2, tOSU #1, and FLA #3. Not sure if he will use this as motivation next year in THE Game but very classy of both coaches...
