How long is a light yr? NASA is getting ready to send a crew to Mars in 15 yrs, most spacecrafts we've sent there take six months to arrive, wheras if we could travel at the speed of light wouldn't we get there instantly if we are among the crew? Earth and Mars travel in different orbits at different rates, so they are not a constant distance appart. When they are in opposition (ie lined up in their orbits) they are closest. When they are on opposite sides of their orbits they are a lot further apart. In 2005 they came the closest in 50,000 years, about 34,650,000 miles.
Light travels about 186,282.4 miles per second. 34,650,000 miles would take 186 seconds or about 3 minutes.
Nobody has ever come close to traveling the speed of light. Not even in a Bugatti Veyron.
