While I wanted him back because Pettitte = Clemens, 16 mil is WAY too much for a pitcher with his injury history as of late. He would have re-signed with us if we would have agreed to a second year option. Drayton wouldn't even hear of it. He's been burned by the Swindell/Drabek contracts to pitchers before.

Watch it be the fucking Rangers or Orioles. They seem to be the next in line. The A's don't qualify for that mold of random "how in the fuck did they do that" teams since they are always in the thick of it. Nor do the Twins. And the Blue Jays are always hyped and fuck up. The only other one would be the Royals but there's no way in hell. Or is there.

If the A's lose Zito...which is likely the case...and turn around and go the World Series, I'd call that a surprise. I don't know how many more diamonds in the rough Beane can pull out of his ass. The manager change won't make too much of a difference. The Orioles could be interesting because of pitching. The Jays need their rotation to stay healthy to even have a chance but they'll mash no doubt. The Indians could make a move up but their bullpen on right now is no better than it was at the end of the year plus, they're going with a very young lineup. The Twins won't surprise anyone but they won't have Radke or Liriano...gonna have to be a three man show (Santana, Mauer and Morneau) in the Twin Cities again. The Mariners and Rangers spend quite a bit and don't get much in return. The Gagne signing in Texas could be an intriguing one to follow if he stays healthy. The Royals are pipedream and that's a shame they're left with the prospect of overpaying for someone like Gil Meche. The Devil Rays should be more competitive this year with Baldelli healthy and Young starting the year with the big club...just not much pitching beyond Kazmir.

My current top 5 power rankings in the AL as of now:
1. Detroit...not many changes, just Sheffield and Mesa so far; hopefully they can find a lefty to replace Walker
2. New York...the lineup when healthy is insane even after getting rid of Sheffield; they've got enough pitching but need more
3. Boston...nice rotation and will always hit the crap out of the ball but who's gonna close?
4. Chicago...rotation overhaul taking place but that middle of the order is the best in baseball
5. Minnesota...thin rotation and still not a huge hitting club; as I said above, the big three will have to carry the weight
