Alabama is not a good job anymore mostly because of the fans. Why do you think Franchione bolted so quickly? No coach wants that job. Fans are much more reasonable at Iowa and we would pay Leavitt as much or more than Bama. Leavitt is a former Fry/Ferentz assistant. He knows the Iowa program well and the fans would rally behind him. If he got hired at Alabama, he'd be hated just because the only thing people in Alabama know how to do is to hate people. Forget the current contract he has, if Iowa offers, he's leaving. Guaranteed.
Leavitt is much closer to Bill Snyder, than he is to Hayden Frye. I know for an absolute FACT that Bill Snyder contacted him when he stepped down and did everything to persuade Coach Leavitt to come back to K-State. K-State offer more money and the same number of years he had left on his contract here. Bottom line is that money is not the most important thing to coach Leavitt and he has stated that repeatedly. If he wouldn't go to K State, then he sure as hell wouldn't go to Iowa. You can take that as my guarantee.
Franchione left because 'Bama was going on more probation for prior infractions that the administrators didn't tell him before he was hired.
Yep, that wasn't me saying Iowa is a better program than OU, those were just facts. Our screwups was OU's fortune. I'd say everything ended up working out just fine for both Iowa and OU. That said, regardless of how much I like Ferentz, there is no way anyone could convince me Stoops wouldn't be doing a better job. He'd be getting better recruiting classes because of his name. And I think both are equally great coaches. But I'm not complaining, Ferentz has done a great job and it's good to see a former Hawkeye (Stoops) doing great as well.
If he goes to Alabama, he won't stay long. He's far too much the control freak, and Alabama is absolutely at the mercy of too much good ole boy money and politics to ever give him the control he wants, regardless of what they say.

As for who would Stoops have chosen.....Iowa or OU? I don't know. Iowa is his alma mater. He always talked about replacing Hayden Fry. What I do know is had Iowa just offered him the damn job BEFORE OU came calling, he'd be our coach. He wanted the job, we just never offered because Bob Bowlsby is a fucking idiot.
Jimminy freaking Christmas if this isn't damn near a carbon copy of what Kstate fan was saying on the powercats board last winter then you can slap me on the ass and call me sparky.

UPDATE: Saban to meet with bama's AD tomorrow to discuss a 45 mil deal over 8-10 years; about what he is already making in Miami.
I can't wait until his first "Welcome to Bammer" visit from one of the trustees and he tells them to shove it.

Nick doesn't stay anywhere for 8-10 years.
Enjoy the migrant whore bama fan.

That's my biggest concern.
I'm not fired up at all about his potentially being our coach. Not a Saban fan at all.
Ending this search is great (sick of the whole mess), but I'd much prefer Gruden or Petrino or even Stallings' offer to come back for a few years.
Sam,
look at it this way, Saban brings in top10 recruiting classes for the 5 years(example), brings bama back to top of programs, then bolts, leaving 5 star talent and a team fighting for bcs bowl and titles. thus, the job becomes wanted by many, replacing him is easy as pie then.
its a way to look at it
saban is one hell of a coach, he gets a lot out of his kids.

Sure, just like LSU did.
They could have had anybody...and got Les(s) Miles.
