Question for Iowa fans

Post by BSmack »

Rumors are starting to circulate that Kirk Ferentz is a candidate for the Steelers HC job should Cowher pack it in. Is this a good thing for the Steelers?

He'd just take the team with him. It would be like when you stop playing NCAA and start playing Madden and just draft all the players from your classes that you imported.

Personally, I don't care if Ferentz goes. I've always thought of him as an NFL coach. The way he runs the program, the way he coaches....it's all similar to how NFL coaches go about their business. He's a FOB (Friend of Belichik), and he's a former asisstant NFL coach, so he knows the game. Everyone knows he grew up a Steelers fan and was more of an NFL guy before coming to college. He'll do fine in Pittsburgh if he goes there. It's been a lifelong dream of his to coach the Steelers according to what everyone says.

If he goes, so be it. The program will be fine. We'll get a good young coach and the incoming coach will take over a very talented roster and will be playing a cupcake schedule in his first year (just like Bret Bielema did this year). Don't get me wrong, I like Ferentz, but unless their name is Lute Olson, I don't get too pissed off about a coach leaving. Nor will I worry about the future of the program if he does leave.

I'd say it's a 25% chance at best (from what I'm hearing) that he ends up in Pittsburgh. If he does, I'll become a big Steelers fan and root for them whenever they aren't playing the Chiefs.

mace, what makes you think the steelers front office would eventually fire him? the faith that that organization has put in Cowher shows that they don't fire a coach just because he didnt make the playoffs.

As for "would this be a good thing for the Steelers"......I have no idea how Ferentz would respond to a head coaching job in the NFL. He's a top coach in CFB and I think the guy does a great job recruiting the best players he can land for Iowa, but the NFL is a another world. He's been there as an assistant and would know what he's getting into but I can't imagine him wanting to leave the job security and $2 million a year he receives at Iowa for a job that he knows will end in his firing at some point in the future.

Mace
Well, for starters he would be looking at a bump to at least 3 million a year. As for job security, the Steelers haven't fired a head coach since 1968. Also, he's a Pittsburgh native and the lure of becoming a Pittsburgh icon as both Noll and Cowher have become has to be huge.

I see what you're saying about the difference between the NFL and NCAA. But something tells me that just as both Noll and Cowher were surprise picks, that the Rooney's might yet again be looking towards someone besides the anointed "frontrunners" Whisenhunt and Grimm.

He'd be taking a pay CUT at $3 million. His base salary right now is $2.7 million plus "incentives." Basically, his salary is around $4 million as his incentives are not really incentives......it's a hidden pay raise.

According to the State of Iowa compensation report, Ferentz took home 3.1 million last year. Though it does appear that he'll make even more this year. I'm not sure what it would take the Rooneys to pry him loose, but he's obviously expressed some interest in the job.

He's playing a high stakes game of chicken with the Rooneys to get more money. There is every reason to suspect he'll be gone come Monday. But there is the 1% chance that the Rooneys back the Brinks truck up to Cowher's front door in Raleigh.

Bsmack,

I think he expressed interest in it years ago. Recently, he's said nothing of the sort. I think that he'd definitely go for an interview if the Steelers came calling. But I'm not sure he wants to go back to the NFL. I will say, if he were to go back, this would be the job. He's already turned down some good NFL jobs. So if he truly is wanting back in the league, this is the job he'd go for. I think everyone knows that. How could anyone blame the guy for wanting to coach the team he grew up a fan of? I know if I were coaching at some school and either Iowa or the Chiefs came calling for me, I'd be gone in a heartbeat regardless of what I had accomplished at that school. So naturally, it's hard to believe he has no interest in the job. But the question is, does he really want to go back to the NFL? I'm not so certain he does. And after the year we just had, how interested are the Steelers in hiring him? One thing is for certain, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds in the coming weeks.

Firstly, unlike jon, I DON'T see Ferentz as an NFL coach. Can't put my finger on why, but I just don't see it. He strikes me more as a career college coach than an NFL one.

Well, I think the Stillers ARE interested in Ferentz. Do I think he is the lead candidate? No. That's Grimm and the Whiz. I think bri's question is inconsequential. As far as Ferentz not seriously entertaining leaving Iowa at this point in his career... what are you smokin?

Let me get this straight...
-You've been a Stiller fan all your life.
-Coaching the Stillers has been part of the fabric of your dreams.
-You will have the opportunity to by employed by one of the most loyal employers in all of professional sports.
-You will get ample opportunity to prove yourself, even if that means consecutive, sub .500 seasons.
-In the event you ever do fail at the NFL level even after ample opportunity, there will be a long line of collegiate employers at your doorstep.

Yeah, you make all kinds of sense, mace. Especially this part:
but I can't imagine him wanting to leave the job security and $2 million a year he receives at Iowa for a job that he knows will end in his firing at some point in the future.
You're right, in the inner circles of the NFL, the Rooneys are snickered at and called the 'Steinbrenners of the NFL'.

It wouldn't make any sense, from a coaching standpoint. The Hawkeyes have more NFL-caliber talent than the Steelers do.

Way to go, IB-mace. Dolt.
No effing shit Kirk once coached in the NFL. Do I have to spell it out perfectly clear for you or are you so simpleminded that you can't put one and one together...

KIRK DOESN'T STRIKE ME AS AN NFL HEAD COACH

Fucking dolt. The list of CFB coaches who were once assistant coaches in the NFL is long. Any poster here w/the brain capacity of a rice grain knows what I meant.

As far as having a supposed pulse on Kirk's thoughts... My take was a pulse on the human fucking populus's thoughts. The Stiller's HC job is one of the most coveted in all of sports, professional or collegiate. Unless you're a complete idiot ('sup you), one would assume any CFB would at least consider it. But as far as you're concerned it's a leap of faith to assume such. Okay, gotcha. Now that your idiocy is confirmed.

Couple that w/Kirk's prior thoughts and comments on the Stillers and you have an ill-advised, ill-conceived, ill-thought take from a grade-A imbecile, that being none other than YOU... and that take won't begin or end with your comment that Kirk would sacrifice job security by working for the Rooneys.

I always knew you kinda sucked... but this bad? Ouch.

How cute... mace is smacking. Awwwww.

Well, I think. After all, you DID go deep into your deck and pull the career smack card w/out having a clue as to what IS I do. Good strategy, sport.

You've proven yourself the thread idiot. I'm too fuckin' tired. Already been to Home Depot once to correct one of my fuckups this morning. I REALLY don't feel like addressing another fuckup again. Just call yourself a fucking fuckup for me. Thanks.

Yeah, I'm gonna run away from YOU.
I think this is one of those 'Laughing over here' moments that people speak of. I mean, that part where you pulled the "I think" part of my post and then said, "there's a first time for everything..." Scary shit and all. Was that the part where I was s'posed do the ol' 180 and run?

Then, that part where, with no where else to go other than your local school for the 'gifted' to canvass for a take, you pussed out and summarily said, "Well, then, you must be all buddy buddy, with Kirky to know this." Oh, that's the kind of post dreams are made of, I tell ya'. Reach for the stars, sparky.

Ya' know, the funny part of it all is that you actually think you're good enough to send someone away.

Mace, the day I run away from you is the same day jack starts a good thread, jerkovich finally looks in the mirror and gets the hoofprints on his back spackled, and you admit your takes in this thread were pretty ill-advised and summarily idiotic, much like yourself.

In other words, it ain't happenin' 'cuz, well... you're that damned stupid. After all, it WAS you who said Kirk wouldn't have job security if he were to coach the Stillers. Yeah, you're THAT stupid. Sorry it had to be spelled out for you.
