Big 12 People, what are your opinions on Dan McCarney?
I didn't follow ISU all that much, but how were his defenses thought of through out the conference? Did he have a reputation as a good position coach? Any dirt?

Goober,
That was way uncalled for. Dude made a mistake 12 years ago, and it's behind him. No need for that garbage.
Killian,
To put it to you this way. Mac is a good FOOTBALL coach. He's a good motivator. The problem is he wears his emotions on his sleeve way too much. Head coaches cannot do that. But as an assistant, he was a very good DC at Wisconsin prior to ISU and a good D-line and O-line coach at Iowa before that. I'd love to see Mac go to Notre Dame. I think he has many years as a good assistant coach left in him. As long as Charlie does not leave game management up to him, he'll do fine. ISU fans will tell you what a poor game manager he was. That, along with being too emotional, were really his only weaknesses as a coach. I was kinda hoping Ferentz would sign him on as an assistant waiting to take over when Norm Parker retires (most likely after next year). He may have been coaching at ISU the past 12 years, but he's still a Hawkeye (just like Bielema).
If you hire Mac, he'll do well. He knows football. And that Notre Dame defense sure as hell could use someone that can motivate like McCarney does.
What are the chances they hire him?

Thanks for the info, JON.TheJON wrote:Killian,

Chances as of now? Who knows. There are some rumors going around, but McCarney seems to be brought up each time. The rumor de jour right now is him and Ken Norton Jr. as co-DC's. John Palermo's name is also brought up, as well as Bo Pelini. I know enough about everyone there is a rumor about, just not McCarney.
I would immagine that Weis would have McCarney call the defense and Bill Lewis would do the defensive game management.

I don't know if I could see a school like Notre Dame hiring Bo Pelini. I think he's a good coach, but that guy opens his mouth way too much. That's why he can't get a head coaching gig. Until he learns to shut the fuck up, he'll always just be a DC. Probably the most immature successful coordinator ever. McCarney has a lot more class than Pelini does. Same with Norton.

and beating out Mike Stoops for that wasn't an easy trick. i always liked McCarney but he couldn't ever get over the hump of actually winning the (very weak) North in 04 and 05.....they had it in the bag both times but gave it away. and ISU was briefly in the top 10 in 03 with Seneca Wallace. they probably didn't deserve to be there as it turns out but we are talking about IOWA STATE.TheJON wrote: Until he learns to shut the fuck up, he'll always just be a DC. if CHizik has success at ISU, McCarney will deserve a lot of credit for increasing the talent level and most certainly raising fan expectations--it wasn't a quick fix process by any means to go from absolute doormat to a 4-5 year period of bowl contention.

With all due respect, I don't give a flying fuck how much class either guy has. Weis doesn't allow assistant coaches to talk to the media, so as long as he isn't a dirty recruiter and coaches a helluva defense, game on.

Jon,
McCarney was 6-6 against Iowa in his tenure, the first 3 losses while rebuilding the program. Not bad for someone who isn't much of a head coach. What does that say about Iowa?
As All-World as Iowa has been in the last 25 years, not a very good number vs. a bad team/coach the last 12 years...

Well fuck, I don't know why ND is getting rid of Rick Minter. He held USC in check much better.Sudden Sam wrote:W/Texas:King Crimson wrote: if CHizik has success at ISU
Gave up 30 first downs to USC
and 574 yards
and 8-14 3rd down conversions
I know that's just one game, but it's not very impressive.

and after the game won a MNC as a Def Coordinator. He also completed his 2nd straight season undefeated. Yeah not impressive at all....Sudden Sam wrote:W/Texas:King Crimson wrote: if CHizik has success at ISU

Frisco,
Not sure what your point is. You say ISU was rebuilding the first 3 years of his tenure, well, Iowa was also rebuilding in 3 of the other years. It's one of those things where "little brother" punks big brother. Like I said, he's a great motivator. He can get his players ready to play against Iowa and sometimes Nebraska, but he puts way too much into that game and his players are emotionally drained the rest of the year. You have to stay on an even level if you wanna have long term success. By the way, Mac finished his career winning just 1 of his last 4 against his alma mater. Unless you live in Iowa, you do not understand what this game means to him and the players at ISU. Half their team wanted to go to Iowa but we didn't offer them scholarships. And on top of that, Iowa is the dream job of their head coach (well, now former head coach). There were years we flat out could not match their intensity. And credit goes to Mac and his team for that. But I'll take a loss to ISU any year in exchange for a New Year's Day bowl game. They can strive for the Cy-Hawk Trophy, we'll strive for the Big-10 Trophy.

Venables has to take more of the blame for the bitch-slapping by USC, Bo had input but the guy with final-say was Venables.
I don't see Bo leaving for another DC-job unless it is in the NFL.
As far as McCarney goes I'd like to see him get the ND-job. ISU isn't an easy place to win-at. It is in a moderately-populated state, they had a meh-budget, and they have to compete with a bigger-name program in Iowa. He didn't kick-ass there but he did better than many guys would.

You are a fucking retard and I would punch you in the heart if I had the chance. How do you turn every topic into one about Iowa? Fuck the Hawkeyes.TheJON wrote:Frisco,

Mac would be a good D-Coordinator. He's a great motivator and a straight shooter. Ran a clean program. His problem was he was too loyal. Barney Cotton has to be the worst OC around. McCarney stuck by his side as with the other assistants. That's why Mac lost his job.

Our O-line was terrible for most of the year. They didn't give Meyer any time at all. He then developed a case of the "happy feet".I've also heard that Mac basically lost control of the team and there was a lot of finger pointing in the locker room. I always thought Cotton did alright at Nebraska as well. He was horrible at ISU the last two years.Danimal wrote:Cotton looked OK(not special but OK) at Neb but I was definitely unimpressed with him this year at ISU. They were about as loaded as an ISU is going to get on offense and they didn't do jack. How could they not get the ball to Blythe more?
