Is USC in for a fall?

Post by 420 »

If I was a USC fan (thank God I'm not), I'd be asking, "Where is the meat?"

Here is a breakdown of the "meat" in their last 3 recruiting classes.

2007: 2 offensive linemen, 1 defensive tackle
2006: 2 offensive linemen, 1 defensive tackle
2005: 1 offensive linemen, 2 defensive tackles

I am of the opinion that the offensive line and defensive tackle positions are the most important for a football team, along with cornerback, and maybe quarterback. If you build a solid foundation with those 4 positions, you can fill in the rest and have a very good team. As I said in the past, give me a great offensive line and mediocre running backs and I will outperform your team with mediocre o-linemen and great running backs.

5 scholarship offensive linemen in 3 yrs? What is Carroll thinking? This does seem to be a new phenomenon with him, too. In 2004 they had 5 offensive linemen. In 2003, 5 offensive linemen and 4 defensive tackles.

I'm honestly curious to figure out what he plans. It seems suicidal to bring in 5 offensive linemen in 3 seasons. It's mind boggling, really.

Ahhhhh, speak of the devil...

This just reported by Scott Wolf of the Daily News:

Here's Where The Last Scholarship Goes

USC made a splash on signing day but even bigger news could be looming for the Trojans as Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain will visit in the next two weeks with the hope of transferring in the fall.
Mustain, who started eight games for the Razorbacks, would be more than just a finishing touch on recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 by ESPN. Although he said he would leave Arkansas last month, he only recently contacted USC despite his teammate, Damian Williams, transferring here in January.
Coincidentally, USC saved a scholarship just in case Mustain decides to transfer.

Sweet! 12 running backs and 5 quarterbacks make a great team!

Right, you're not going to be thin in 2007. Try and think this through. You get 10 offensive linemen in 2003 and 2004.

But in a year or two you are going to be ridiculously thin, when the pain of recruiting 5 in 3 years bites you in the ass. Now, they could get a big recruiting class of OL next year, but it generally takes an OL recruit 2 years at a minimum before he is ready to contribute - and contribute at a high level. It is the rare player who is ready to step in on the OL as a frosh or RS Frosh and dominate. So, even with a big recruiting class next yr, I think the 2008 and 2009 seasons for USC will see a weak OL, and thus a few losses.

Of that list, by my count 6 (Baker, Radovich, Byers, Malu, Draper, Rachal) of those guys are either red-shirt seniors or in their 4th year of eligibility. With 2 guys coming in this class, that leaves EIGHT returning offensive linemen in 2008.

Good luck with that.

My opinion is that Carroll is like a kid in a candy store. It's an hour before dinner and while he knows his mother is making some mashed potatoes and pot roast, he can't help but stop in for a sweet treat. We all need a sweet treat sometimes. Petey Pooh sees the jawbreakers and HAS to have one. Fair enough. But then he sees the peanut butter cups, and ooooh how he loves that peanut butter. So he grabs one of those and scarfs it down. Then he sees a big bowl of jelly beans and grabs a handful. And so on, until he has eaten a dozen candies and is sick to his stomach.

He goes home and his mom has prepared a nice home cooked meal, but Petey is too full! His mother sees the chocolate all over his face and his not happy. She tries to make him eat the dinner anyways, but he can't fit it down. He's out of scholarships! I mean room in his belly. Finally, Petey barfs it up all over the table and his mother spanks him.

Mtool represents what is wrong with the other 9 Pac 10 schools. Instead of worrying about their program and its team actually showing up for its marquee OOC games they spend all their time obsessing with USC. While the rest of the Pac 10s fans and teams concren themselves with trying to put down the Trojans or bust them for one thing or the other the Trojans are looking at how to improve their program and compete with the best in the nation.
Maybe Mfool should focus more on feCal and hope that fecal can show some heart this season so they dont repeat what happened at Tennessee last year. Quit trying to make USC look bad and hope that his team wont make the rest of the Pac 10 look bad

USC keeps 2 of the runningbacks and makes the rest O Lineman and DT's. They have that luxury of justing converting some 285 lb. running backs to line positions. Then the rest of the country gets to deal with linemen who run 4.4 second fortys. The rich are rich, ya know?

Martin Coleman, Kristopher O'Dowd and Michael Reardon are 3 OL recruits USC has in the 07 class
Jeff Byers has only played 1 year and has been injured for 2, after his Medical RS is awarded he will have 3 seasons of eligibility left.
06 and 07 were very down years in California for OL, USC didnt just throw a bunch of scholarships at 2 star players, they were in for several 5 star guys from other states and some didnt pan out.
USC already has a commit from the best O Lineman in the state for 08 and with 08 looking to be a good year for that position locally, the Trojans will stock up.
Not counting the 3 OL that USC took in this class, 1 who has been enrolled since start of Spring, the Trojans have 11 offensive linemen coming back for next season, 4 will be seniors.
Perhaps what you should concern yourself with is feCals inability to win a meaningful game away from home or the fact they tend to play with 0 heart in their intersectional OOC games.

You seem to be a bit confused again... I'll get back to this later.

Of course they were...

:Translation: they didn't want to play for $C.

Hmmmmmm.... maybe the 3 and 4 star OL in California didn't want to play for $C. Has that ever crossed your arrogant itty-bitty mind???

They sure as hell wanted to play for Cal. In fact, they made us one of the top teams in the country for OL recruits!

Offensive Lineman Rankings...CAL #6..#1- #7...virtual tie.

Click on OL in the link

Note: $C has only 2 OL recruited...

SoCalTrjn wrote:Not counting the 3 OL that USC took in this class,.
Psssst... You only have 2 OL recruited in this class!!!

Michael Reardon was a DE and a TE in high school... you may want to make him a OL, but he's still not an O Lineman.

Good luck with that

So will Spanos be missing any more games due to academic ineligibility? He has a RS freshman & a true freshman behind him. Draper is not listed on some USC sites depth charts. Looks like he's a walkon who got a scholarship to fill a hole. So, in reality, sophomore Howell has a true freshman behind him at center. Also, somebody on the OLine will get hurt. It's the nature of the game.

Jacob Rogers was a TE in HS that converted to OT at USC and did pretty well.
Byers is a Center, was the #1 Ol recruit at C and played guard at SC his true freshman year when kalil stepped up at C
Sonheimer was saying that the last 2 years were down years for OL recruits in CA, has nothing to do with who USC was able to get and not get, they got most the OL in CA that they offered

the only thing i have to say, and there is no chance in hell i'm reading all this thread.....is that on scout USC had more 5 star players in this year's class than Cal has 4 star players. so, that this appears to be recruiting smack is kind of funny. though, the 420 troll is getting kind of old.

SC fan: what happened to the Byers kid from Colorado, OL got hurt i think?

If Beyers was injured for 2 years, he likely won't get a sixth year medical hardship waiver. Had he been redshirted with no injury, then an injury occured, possibly. But I doubt he will get the 6th year.
