pulling shows from my DVR?

Post by jiminphilly »

I have a few kids shows I'd like to pull from the DVR and burn to a DVD... the DVR has the USB port on the back... anyone have a process or website they found useful for this kind of project?

Most likely the usb port on the DVR is not active. mine has a firewire port on it i know is inactive. most of that stuff is for the manufacturer or repair centers to run diagnostics if it fucks up. My wife actually takes programs off the dvr and burns them to dvd but it's kind of a pain in the ass if you ask me. but she records her shows then watches them on our other t.v. while she works out. If you have a newer style cam corder you can get a cable that hooks into the output component jacks on the back that in turn plugs into your cam corder. Depending on your dvr it might have an option in the recorded list to save to tape. set the program up and hit record on the cam corder and save the program to it. Then transfer it from your cam corder to your computer then burn it to dvd. Told you it's a long process but it works for her, I wouldn't have the patience for it though.

Most likely you are out of luck. Its been a little while since I've played with and researched DVRs, but most companies disable their USB port. Tivo has some interesting offerings (or will have some) where you can watch shows you've recorded on other DVRS on the network or even on your PC, but I"m not sure if its available yet.

Some people re-write their DVRs or just build their own for exactly this reason.

Here are some options. If you are going to be hard core, I would built a computer with a TV Card and use it as a PVR to record shows you want to burn to a CD/DVD. Some packages even allow you to connect back home and schedule recordings through the internet or even watch your shows away from home.
I will say that as nifty as some of these packages sound, they aren't necessarily as easy to use as your PVR.
Another option is to do something similar. Record your shows on the PVR, then connect it to your computer, which would need a TV capture card or a video capture card and record the show and then burn it to a cd/dvd. Last but not least, you can go with something similar to what chargerfan suggested, a video camera or a DVD recorder/player.

Probably the real question is, what are you trying to do?

Jim, DirecTv's TiVo has a record to tape function, you can use this in conjunction with a DVD recorder that has live record capabilities. Use the outputs on the DVR to connect to the input on the DVD recorder and record like a live TV show. Pretty much a pain in the ass, it records in real time, and probably more expensive than buying a "kids" (porn) DVD. Not quite as messy as what CM has up there. It takes the camcorder out as the middle man, but that does depend on what system you have.

I'm attempting to be a cheap bastard and take the DVR recordings of about 6-7 kids shows and move them to my hard drive of my computer so I can do what I need to do to burn them to a DVD.

I could probably rent the DVDs and save the trouble since I have a burner etc...but I really wanted to see how hard it would be to move something from the DVR, convert it to what i need it to be and burn it.
