They were
told to feel told to feel this way by a bunch of hypocrites.
After this whole Imus debacle goes away, the issue itself will not. That much I can guarantee you. Does anyone really think that all the black comics who get away with bagging on the white man (
Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, etc, etc) won't be put under a microscope sometime in the near future? No way this stops with Imus. The white man will rise up. This saddens me. The PC Police are putting an end to the funnay. I hate to borrow a line from Frisco... but WAKEY WAKEY, people.
Interesting about those two comics, both of whom have been more critical of the black man than the white man in their standup aand their tv shows.
Rock's infamous "N...iggers versus Black People," something that made his HBO special huge and him as well. Rock later told Ed Bradley that he got a lot of feedback from people and that because of the negative feedback, he wouldn't be doing it again ever. Seems a lot of people took it to mean something that it wasn't.
Chappelle left 50 million on the table because after two seasons of his show, he felt that the reaction of many to his jokes about the black man left him with a terrible feeling. So, rather than get a lot of money to continue to stereotype the black man, he said fuck it and went to Africa.
Those two individuals HAVE been put under the microscope already: by themselves and by the people they most make fun of. And, they changed their comedy routines because of the negative feedback. The world didn't come to an end when that happened.
Going back to mvscal's favorite comedian, Lenny Bruce, there have always been white comedians who have made fun of other ethnicities and there have been black comedians who have done the same. Personally, I find race/stereotype humor extremely funny and I don't think the lame bits of a few hacks like Michael Richards and Don Imus will remove such humor from the popular culture landscape.
No need for the white man to rise up just yet...
