i think the acronym HBCU is sort of silly. yes, great for those schools to get recognition. but, there HAS to be some way to say it that's better and less dumb. i don't think the article is all that much Jesse or Al bait.

nor, do i see the world in those terms.

race issues in the US *do* exist. it's just the mediatization of stock ways to think about it that bothers me.

not against you lax, i'm just being rhapsodic. and it cuts all kinds of ways. whitey in america didn't invent racism.

where were Jesse and Al when that black guy beat up that 101 year old woman in New Yorkhttp://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/27/nati ... 6676.shtml
or when those 5 black guys car jacked, raped, tortured and murdered a young white couple in Tennessee? http://activerain.com/blogsview/75774/O ... orture-and

They will probably show up when the guys who did that stuff are sentenced to death and claim that they were the real victims
Jesse and Al are piles of shit

Just a shot across the bow, but if this turns into a race discussion, this thread is getting TROTS'd. If we keep it about the academics, fine, but leave the race out of it. Dr. Detroit we ain't.

KC....I know whitey didn't invent racism. Hel historically blacks sold blacks into slavery but I brought this up because it makes the HBCU look less than stellar, now kids don't get lazy and stupid when they get to college. These are life long skills and habits that have been developed over time. Most of these kids probably shouldn't be in college in the first place but that's another story.

as a teacher at a div. 1, US News and World Report (meaningless) top 100, and BCS school....i can tell you a lot of these kids don't belong in college by standard admission requirements regardless. and given the "tutoring" they get, essentially cheating...there is NO EXCUSE in today's world of grade inflation you can't make a C in college. now, it's also true (and bash me if you want, call me a homer) that people like Barry Switzer and Tarkanian to a degree saw the opportunity to get some kids "off the street" and into college and stood by them their whole life. as an educator who issick and tired of catering to white middle class kids who think there destiny is to be a CEO i can see where that all fits in. real life chances.

not to make them saints, because being "ballers" was more than part of it. but the "rest of your life" thing, Barry Switzer is pretty good about. for all his faults.

I agree about those kids who don't really belong in college, however the argument is that the athletic department brings in millions of dollars to the university so it's kind of a necessary evil to gain some good for the real students. I agree about Tark and Switzer but the problem is that those kids were given a spot in a so called reputable university at the expense of someone who academically qualified to be there. I also agree about the white middle class kids who think they deserve something. As a high school teacher myself I get sick and tired of parents asking me what I'm going to do about their kid and how I'm trying to screw their kid over and the fact that they've failed everything in school is somehow my fault.
