JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (June 14, 2007) -- The Jaguars released safety Donovin Darius, a move that signaled the team's desire to go with younger and faster defenders.
Darius, who will turn 32 in August, has been a mainstay in the secondary since he was the club's first-round pick in the 1998 draft.
"It was a shock the way it happened," Darius said at a news conference. "But at the same time, I've been around this business long enough to understand the nature of this business."
Darius missed 14 games because of a torn knee ligament in 2005. Then he started 10 games a year ago before breaking his leg Nov. 20.
"Donovin has been a class guy both on and off the field," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. "He's been a ferocious safety known for big hits affecting people that want to try to come over the middle. He's a good young man that has done a lot of good things in the community and has been a positive influence in our locker room."
The Jaguars took Florida safety Reggie Nelson with their first-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft and also selected Wake Forest safety Josh Gattis in the fifth round.
"We'll miss Donovin's leadership both on and off the field," cornerback Rashean Mathis said. "Personally, I'll miss someone who's become a very good and close friend."
Donovin finished his career in Jacksonville with 858 tackles, 14 interceptions, seven forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and two sacks. He surpassed 100 tackles in a season six times and led the secondary in tackles in his first seven seasons with the Jaguars.
3-2-1 Best pick up of the year bar-none.

Rodney Harrison was released by SD for age and salary cap reasons too.
Not quite the injury situation(s), but there are some similarities.
Hey, Darius' injuries do concern me some, but I see this as a no lose pick-up by Oakland.
They have the cap room available, and the Raider defense can REALLY benefit from what he can potentially bring to the table.
If Darius gets hurt again, Schweigert steps in and does his thing again.
Oakland has assembled a pretty nice little d-backfield.
Huff, Darius/Schweigert at the safeties and Aso and Fabs at CB.
Not too shabby.
And the defense as a whole is YOUNG and talented.
3rd in the league statistically last yr.
Aside from Darius and Sapp, everyone is a kid.
If Kiffin can get the offense to do SOMETHING this year, the Raiders are gonna be competetive ..... at least.
Lick my sweaty ballsack.

...let's see...blew out knee in 05 and snapped leg in 06 ...cased closed! another aging, injury prone castoff signed by the S&B...no shocker here, afterall, the Raiduhs have to keep "down" their reputation as the absolute dregs of the NFL. Yep, nice signing indeed!

Who gives a fuck, you goddamn crybaby-our secondary was fucking badass without him. The signing just adds depth to an already stellar group.

R-Jack wrote:It is a nice signing. It gives the best unit of the Raiders more depth. If he was brought in to be the end-all, be-all solution to a depleated secondary, you may have had a point. This is not the case with Darius, so your opinion finds itself in a familiar position.ChargerMike wrote:Darius missed 14 games because of a torn knee ligament in 2005. ..i'll concur with mv on this one..all smack aside, the defense is definetly on the right track so this signing can't hurt...can't see it adding much though. It's the offensive offense that's the Raiduhs problem!

Every time he's in a game, Sands is nothing short of kickass-he reminds me of a taller, slightly skinnier Grady Jackson/Rod Coleman when they were both disruptive forces as Raiders. He'll be the starter alongside Sapp this season.poptart wrote: Oakland might be a solid DT away from fielding a HELLUVA defense.
Pop, we already have a helluva defense that is the youngest in the L and needs nothing other than a little depth in a spot or two......but I see you working-some DT depth would be great at this point since Hawthorne doesnt look like he's going to amount to shit.
Honestly, what the defense really needs is for the fucking offense to not leave them in fucked field position time and again and for the O to get a fucking first down or 2 so the D isnt on the field for 80% of the motherfucking game. If that can be accomplished (Big "IF"), we'll notch down some wins and be competitive again.

I KNOW you're not jocking the "great" Terdell Sands, right Lames????Raydah James wrote:Every time he's in a game, Sands is nothing short of kickass-he reminds me of a taller, slightly skinnier Grady Jackson/Rod Coleman when they were both disruptive forces as Raiders. You know, the same T. Sands that couldn't even make it off the Chiefs'
PRACTICE SQUAD???

Word. You look at their last 9 losses to end the season and they probably win at 4-5 of them if their offense wasn't so utterly inept. The loss to Cleveland in week 4 was winnable too. The win against Pitt, they had what... 100 yards total offense and 2 DEF TD?

Let me guess-you're from KC?
And a KC blast at that! Do you have a newsletter?
Sorry to hit a hard spot with you, James. But for Christ's sake, take it like a man. The Raiders suck. My team sucks too. I just don't go crying like a bleeding vag when somebody says they're only going to win 4 games this year. :sheesh:

KC dipshit commenting on any other teams' defensive players is high fucking comedy.
Enjoy your 1-15 season, Stay Puft.
Truth be told, KC is probably kicking themseves for letting Sands slide away.
It's not like the Chefs could use more beef in the middle of the d-line or anything.
I gues Sands was too much of a 'project' player for KC to be bothered with.
KC's loss was certainly Oakland's gain.
Al gets over -- ho hum
Paul once again boots his own ass -- ho hum
Turd happened to play his ASS off last year.
One of the real 'surprise' bright spots on the team.
He's still young and he's coming into his own now.
While still a bit of a 'situational' player last year, his reps in the middle of the line were very welcome.
Glad to have him, tyvm, asswipe.

Glad you have confidence. I'm not quite sold. They definitely are improved over last year, no doubt about that. And I'm a huge fan of Jemarcus Russell, but how often do you see first round QB's make a huge impact in their first year. It doesn't matter if he can throw 85 yards from his ass, because he'll be marked down at the spot where he lands on his ass.poptart wrote:...... of the first 8.Dog wrote:So basically the Raiders will win 6 games next year?
I'd like to see the Raiders have a good season, because the NFL is more interesting when the Raiders contend....but its a bit myopic to think they'll be 6-2 at the half way point.

You mean Lawrence Taylor came out of retirement to play RB?poptart wrote:Darius will definitely boost the run defense, and in a division with LT, LJ, and an always solid Dungver running game, this is verrah nice.
IF he stays healthy, of course, yep.
Oakland might be a solid DT away from fielding a HELLUVA defense.
