Herbstreit doing Ohio preps favors?

with his Herbstreit classic? Usually those kids have to wait til they get to go to a Big 10 school before they realize how much fatser and better players from other parts of the country are.

Southern California schools havent even started playing games yet (season starts sept 7 )but they sent 2 schools to Ohio and took down Glenville and Moeller, who are supposed to be 2 of Ohios best.

did any HS's from SEC country make the trip or did they say that their league play was far too tough for them to play anything but deaf and retard schools prior to the start of league play?

while Glennville is usually a decent team.. and a win over them is impressive..

Cin Moeller is not the power house they are made out to be.. 5-5 last year and 6-5 the year before..

I looked up the website and some of those matchups are terrible.. Grove City? WTF? they went 4-6 last year??? I wonder the reasoning..

yeah, I saw what seemed to be Ohios best team matched up vs a 6-4 team from PA while Indianas top team was playing a 5-5 Ohio team

im not sure what they are using to determine the "top" teams.. or why they seem to be leading teams to the slaughter.. I think teams like to play in this because they get some bigger attention, and I think the loss doesn't count towards the playoffs and the win counts.. or at least helps..

let's break some of this down...

Moeller was ahead at half 22 - 13 on Mission Viejo...game ended close if I remember correctly

Hoover Alabama got beat and Charlotte Independence got beat so two teams from the South East came up and got beat...

St. X from Cincy beat DeMatha (two highly ranked USA Today teams)...

and LBP beat Glenville by 8 21 - 13 so not a horrific score in the least bit...if you are trying to infer superiority of CA teams by two close games...then hmmm...Glenville is fast but not very deep and young...LBP has what 5000 students to draw from?

But I like the format and I like the fact that high schools from across the country can play against each other...as Pete said some of the Ohio teams were horrible the last two years...I would like to see more Cleveland area teams (Solon, Mentor, St. Eds) and perhaps more Youngstown and Toledo teams...yeah Cincy teams can ball but hell it's not like they own football in Ohio...

So Cal still trying to figure out why you think teams outside of Ohio are so much faster and better...Ohio is one of the blueblood high school football states with CA, TX, FLA, and PA...so pretty elite company...

Wrong, many So. Cal teams play in a zero week game. Read the paper once in a while. Crespi, Birmingham, Moorpark, Oaks Christian among others had games last week.

Dude, freaking Birmingham is loaded. Marquis and Malik Jackson, Donovan Carter (UCLA) Milton Knox (UCLA) Mychael Rivera (Oregon). How the Celts won that game is beyond me. I get to see Birmingham on the 14th and Crespi on 10-4. Check us out on http://www.vootage.com

If we're gonna talk about this then lets get it right.

Mission Viejo beat Moeller 26-22. Moeller may have a great name and all but they are still only ranked #3 in Cincinnati, not OHIO, but in Cincinnati. A very good showing by the Crusaders against one of California's best programs.

Colerain beat Hoover, AL 20-17 in OT. Another great game with two great teams. Colerain is the #2 ranked team in Cincinnati and in the top 5 in Ohio, certainly one of Ohio's best teams. They are ranked in USA Today's Top 25.

Elder beat Charlotte Independence 41-34 in OT. Elder is ranked #4 in Cincinnati right now and they just beat the team ranked by USA Today as #3 in the NATION. Independence came into this game with a 109 game winning streak and left humbled.

St. Xavier beat DeMatha (ranked #5 by USA Today) 28-7 on Sunday on ESPN. St. X played without their star tailback Darius Ashley and still pummeled DeMatha. St. X is the top ranked team in Cincinnati and also in Ohio.

Overall, Ohio won four games and the USA won seven games. Most people in Ohio are critical of the teams selected to represent Ohio. Some of our top ranked teams were left out and some of the teams that represented Ohio will be lucky to finish 5-5 and won't even make the playoffs. All things considered though, Ohio had a great showing. Two of the top five teams in the nation left with losses. There might be THREE teams from Cincinnati in the USA Today Top 25 this week. Cincinnati is the only city that has ever done that before and will probably do it again this week.

A great showing by all of the teams involved in the Herbie. The visiting fans were great and the Ohio fans were great hosts.

so next year Glenville can come to Long Beach Poly and play their first game against the jackrabbits who are playing their second and if Glenville wins by 8 we can call it a draw?

yes some schools in CA played this week, the schools in Ohio that Mission and LB Poly were playing still had already played a game and were at or close to home, the CA schools traveled 2000 miles and were playing their first game.

First of all, Ohio teams are only allowed to travel to bordering states for games. Glenville isn't allowed to play in California. Second, this is week #2 in Ohio. This is only the second game for all of the Ohio teams. Is it an advantage? Sure, its nice to get in a game before playing a big time opponent but its not like its our third or fourth game.....its our second.

Long Beach Poly had a great showing against a very good Glenville team. Mission Viejo had a great showing against a very good Moeller team. Last year, DeLasalle had a great showing against Elder. The California teams are 3-0 in the Herbie and have played with heart and class in each game. California should be proud of the teams that have come here so far. It should be pointed out though that those three CA teams were the clear favorites in each of those three games.

Mission is maybe 5th or 6th in their own county, Mater Dei, Servite, Edison, O Lu are all ranked ahead of Mission. forget the fact that they are probably 15 or so in the Southern Section (which doesnt include Los Angeles or San Diego) they may be in the top 2% of the states football programs but the state has over a thousand teams. Ok, I guess that makes them and Moeller fairly equal which would explain why they scored a TD with a minute left to beat the Crusaders. Moeller is the third ranked team in their CITY. Mission Viejo is #6 in their county which I'm sure has MANY more big schools than Cincinnati. It was a great game between two evenly matched teams. If you want to point to that game as "proof" of something then go for it. I'm not pointing to Colerain's win over Hoover as some kind of proof that Ohio football is better than southern football. It was a great game between two great teams.

I'll still challenge anyone to find me four schools that are within 10 miles of each other in a city the size of Cincinnati that can do what the Cincinnati schools did this weekend. Two of the top five teams left with losses. MV was the only team to win and they had to score in the last minute or it would have been a sweep. Again, congrats to the California teams. They have performed better than any other state that has participated in the Herbie.

Yeah I noticed that Birmingham was ranked ahead of Crespi. I guess that 95-yard fumble return for a TD didn't hurt.

It's too bad if they play football because they won't learn anything about honesty, integrity, etc.....from that cheating fool.

Hey Greg...not to mention the several penalties that B-ham had. From what I read they were a typical city team....many incidents of stupidity, show boating, etc.....cheap shots, etc.....Which is not really they way their coach does things. He's pretty much a CIF type coach with a city program. Usually a class group with some discipline. I'll get a chance to see them against Valencia week #2.

rack you bearcat...hard getting updates down here...but I got the one I wanted...INDEPENDENCE got beat by the 3rd or 4th best team in the city of Cincy...yet they think high school football in NC is relevant...fuckers...

so cal I was merely pointing out that some of these games were close ones...including Indy Cathedral beat Cincy LaSalle 7-6, LBP (with a ton more students then Glenville) won by 8, the aforementioned Moeller score, and some other close games...so it's not like Ohio shit the bed...there are a good bit of Cleveland area schools (Solon, Mentor) that have not played in this that would have a good showing...this is great for high school football and I hope it continues...

Thanks buckeye. Ohio did a great job this year especially with so many teams participating that shouldn't have been invited in the first place. I'd love to see St. Ignatius be involved next year along with a couple other good Cleveland programs. I also wouldn't mind seeing some of the more worthy Columbus area schools participate like Dublin Coffman, Hilliard Davidson, or Upper Arlington. It is a great event though. The all day ticket for the four Saturday games in Cincinnati was only $15. For that, you got to see some tremendous HS football including two overtime games with Independence losing after 109 straight wins.

the truth hurts doesn't it? In the CIF championship game vs. Hart a few years ago, did he not paint a logo on footballs that resembled the spalding ball they CIF REQUIRED EVERY team use? Yep, I called him a cheater with regards to that. Also, how is it that he has so many kids on his team that should be going to other schools? People want honesty and I've got no problem giving it to them. If it hurts your feelings then please convince me that the man is honest.

why should they be going to other schools? DJ Shoemate and Matt Kalil live in Corona... not even the same county as the High School they go to... I realize that they got to church school but there are school district transfers between public schools all the time. Randy Rstes went to Los Al while living in Compton, R Jay Soward went to Eisenhower for 3 years then transferred to Fontana.
Its not like the olden days when we were in school and you had to falsify addresses to go to schools in other districts. My cousin lived in Corona and played football at Fontana, he said half that team lived in Bllomington or Etiwandas district but wanted to play at Fohi.
The Ball thing is pretty new too, I played at El Toro, I remember a playoff game when the other team used an actual rubber ball when they were on offense and nothing was said about it.
I cant say that Johnson is honest, but I cant say that he is any worse than any other HS football coach in Southern California either.

I know Davidson <shameless plug>(my alma mater who won the D1 championship last year)</shameless plug> played last year. and won.. I agree though, more central ohio schools would be nice..

That would be cool sam or I wouldn't mind seeing another FLA team last year was Lakeland (very good FLA team), and or John Curtis from Louisiana, or some other Ga teams (they had Buford this year)...

this is a great thing that they have going I just hope it continues...I wouldn't mind seeing some more Texas teams either...
