a couple days on..
i've had a couple days to become more reasonable about the loss, which means i now wish carr a sudden death rather than a lingering, painful one. aside from that, perhaps we finish out the season strong.

Yup...I'm not avoiding them, I'm listening to sports talk today while I work. To stick your head in the sand pretend it was all a bad dream is the wimpy way to approach this. Acknowledge the loss and talk about it in a rational manner and you can begin to move on instead of acting like your world has come to an end.
Is this really any tougher to take than losing the OSU game last year? The bottom line, you're disappointed...I guess there are differing degrees of disappointment but it depends on your expectations for this team from the start. I really looked at the opening games of the season to truly understand where the team is at. I don't get to see spring practice and I don't get to see the new freshmen in action until they're playing on Saturday afternoons. It's pretty much all speculation over whether or not this was a legit title contender or they were a trendy media pick to be a contender just based on what they had on paper.
I was worried about the defense and this loss only feeds that worry going forward this season. Also, I'm bothered that a team that runs a dynamic offense with athletic players at the skilled positions baffled Michigan again. It goes back to Donovan McNabb when came in with Syracuse and he singled-handedly destroyed the Wolverine defense. Look at Troy Smith, Drew Stanton, Brad Banks...the list goes on and on...dynamic athletes and modern offenses give Michigan fits. App State fits in that mold and if you looked at the game from the outside, you shouldn't be that shocked to see them struggle. What I am most disappointed in is with their senior QB and four year starter couldn't rise to the occasion. If he can't do it against a D-IAA opponent, what makes you think he can carry this team past MSU, Wisconsin or Ohio State if the game is close.
Through it all, I'm actually am looking forward to this Saturday against Oregon but obviously this game and other games this year have a different meaning given the final destination of the season won't include the title game. If this team loses badly to Oregon, it just shows this wasn't the team we expected and you can only hope they can grit it out and finish with a respectable record and not be sub-.500 and allow this to get to spiral out of control. I would be very proud of this team if they're able to rebound and make something out of this season when everyone is declaring this a lost season after one week.

Actually its WAYYYYY worse. No one can blame Michigan for losing on the road to your rival. You can get blamed for losing to a FUCKING JV TEAM AT HOME in front of 110,000 people. It is the worst thing EVER...period...no loss in the history of the program is worse. I am STILL sick to my stomach. I still wake up every morning thinking about it and getting pissed off. There is not a silver lining and anyone who tries to justify what happened Saturday as anything less than a complete and utter failure of the team, the coaches and the administration is fooling themselves.
Actually I have problem with this. I will not read, watch or listen to anything about this game.

I am dreading Saturday. The only thing I can take solice in is that I will be at the game. There will be no APP STATE highlights, there will be no commentators comparing the game to last week. It will be me and the 105,000 assholes who show up watching and praying that a completly different team shows up on Saturday. If we lose Saturday we are fucked. We are fucked in a way that most Michigan fans haven't figure out yet. This sport is too competitive to have these kind of seasons. Nebraska, ND, Alabama and others have yet to recover from their failures. When one team falls another steps up and if Michigan has any heart or pride left they will not let this slide continue.
Sorry Shoalzie...I love your optimism, but I think you are crazy on this one man.
Those who stay will be champions.

This coming from a fan who is just as passionate about my beloved KC Chiefs who have three times pissed off homefield advantage in the playoffs in the past 12 years.
You can try to ignore the pain, it won't go away. You back over the paper in the driveway, it's still there when you get home. You try not to listen to the sports talk shows, but you fucking know they're talking about it and you want to scream.
So eventually you learn to face it head on, and then move on. You realize that not one player or coach on that team is going to make your mortgage or put food on your table.
You realize that it's just a fucking game.

"rational manner" and "sports talk radio" disappeared in about 1998. and even then, it was only entertaining for a couple years after that....

if by michigan fan you mean the whole of michigan fans, a great point about bandwagoning, but if you meant the ppl on this board, it's a bit misdirected. the shite thing about this loss is we AREN'T fairweather, which means we have to absorb this frustration rather than think, oh well, i like michigan state anyhow... plus, we're three days removed from the first game, and we haven't had the luxury of the oregon game to relieve some of our angst. was this an anomoly? do we suck? our only touchstone is a loss to a d-1aa school, which i'm sure you can imagine is a bit unsettling.
point: those who stay will be champions, perhaps even this year. but allow us some time to freak out, eh. it's b/c we care.

FSN Detroit is actually going to show the replay of the game tonight...it should air shortly, I think Tigers postgame is running long. Part of me wants to watch the game just so I understand more of what happened. I listened to the radio call of the game and you follow the stats online during the game but it doesn't tell you the whole story. The loss sucks no matter whether or not you actually see it...I think I'd just like to see what exactly went down on Saturday.
You're absolutely, shit does happen...I do have a sick curiousity to watch this replay of the game so I can see this debacle unfold before my eyes. The loss will go down in infamy but I don't think this program is doomed like some might think or what to think. We'll find out in the coming weeks if this was just one giant hiccup or it could just be the harbinger of this being a down year for the team in spite of the hype surrounding the returning talent on offense.
I've heard some guys today on the radio compare this to the loss to Colorado (the infamous hail mary game) and how the team never recovered that rest of the year. It could very well be the same reaction but I think to lose the first game isn't probably as losing the 5th, 8th or 10th game. They hadn't built up any positive momentum yet in the season so you don't know how high this team could've gone. I know no team has had a loss quite like this but I'm sure most programs have had that one tough loss in a season with promise and it completely derailed them for the season but didn't destroy the program entirely.
I'll be an optimist and say the damage from this game won't reach into next season...especially when you consider Hart, Henne and Long are seniors and who knows if Manningham is back for another year. The defense is young for the most part and they were going to struggle anyways this year. Next year, it'll be Mallett, Horn, McGuffie and Hemmingway leading the way for this team...a completely different group of guys who didn't have anything to do with this loss. I don't think these guys are going to worry about the App State loss...they'll work on building their own legacy when the departing seniors legacies are pretty much written with their lack of success against OSU and in bowl games and tack on this historic loss. If Carr was hanging around for multiple years beyond this year one, I might dread the future but I think a change is coming soon so calling for his head now isn't going to make this loss go away.
There is no way to candy coat it. It was a bad loss. You aren't supposed to lose to a former D-1AA team in your home opener. But let me tell you something. Shit happens. Get over it.
You guys really need to chill. You've got a good football team, and perhaps a great one. You've got excellent facilities. You've got a rich history and a great tradition. You'll be fine. The Michigan football machine isn't going to off the rails for a dozen years because this particular squad pissed the bed on one Saturday. Shit happens. Get over it.

I haven't read on here where any UM posters have shown anything but sportmanship toward App. St. Nor have I witnessed any posts that would indicate that we were acting fair weathered. When we kick it off Saturday, I'm sure we'll all be watching.88 wrote:These are college kids, busting their ass for nothing but a scholarship (and probably a new Chevy or Ford...). Was there some seriouse meltage and/or venting? You bet your bippie. This is an unprecedented event. We needed to get it out and it would appear that we are righting ourselves as a group. Make no mistake we are the guts-n-glue of the maize-n-blue, we aren't going anywhere.
