The mind of an AP writer

Post by RumpleForeskin »

What is more impressive:

A complete shallacking of an unranked team who was a national powerhouse 3 maybe 4 years ago (OU vs Miami)...

or

A 21 point victory over a school ranked 19th in the nation but has never been a powerhouse (Texas vs TCU)

How do you think writers would view these two games when making the new rankings for Monday? Texas dropped from 4th to 7th in the polls because of a very unimpressive win over Arkansas St. and Oklahoma was overly impressive in the way they beat North Texas. This weekend is really a push between these two schools if you look at their opponents. Miami is unranked and are currently in transition, so Oklahoma was supposed to man handle them. TCU was a possible BCS contender if they ran the table and could still have an outside shot if they win out.

I have a strong feeling OU will get votes in the polls come Monday just because of the Miami name and the 51 points they put up. I also have a strong feeling that Texas will not leap frog Wisonsin or Florida because they beat a team out of a mid-major conference by 21 points. Does that seem right?

None of this matters. Michigan got their ass kicked at home and Notre Dame got their ass kicked on the road. The only two story lines are:

- When will Carr be fired
- How much longer will Charlie be given a hall pass

LSU being good and all the other obvious statements are purely background. The two items above are pretty much the only things guys will talk about this coming week.

seems like this is a "cry for Texas" post....but the real question is what has TCU done to be ranked in the first place in the second week of the season?

your whole pity party for UT is based on the fact TCU is ranked--no?

I'd give OU my vote because they have looked damn good. They came out and dominated Miami from the get-go after smacking-around North Texas(ya UNT blows but the Ark St team Texas couldn't put-away isn't much better). Texas looked like total crap against Ark St and took quite a while to get going against TCU. Texas has played one good half of football out of four, gotta rate OU above them at this point. But I was impressed with the way Texas came-together for the first time since early November and got shit done in the second-half. Maybe it is a sign that the lull is over and Texas is going to start looking like Texas again.

OU is impressing me. Bradford is not playing like a frosh, definitely looking better than our man Keller. I think the BSU-loss may have been a blessing-in-disguise, they seem like a team out to prove something to the world now.

But the season is young, we'll see how things shake-out.

This is a stupid topic. It is fucking week 2. Who cares? All that matters is what is done on the field. If we beat OU and win out go 12-0 and win the Big XII and are still #7....then I will bitch.

And when USC comes out and shellacs Nebraska in Lincoln, ESPN will start prepping its "USC vs. the '85 Chicago Bears ... who would win?" routine.

Not a lot will be known until key games:

1. USC: @ Ore and @ Cal
2. LSU vs. Fla
3. OU vs. Tex
4. Some other team off the radar ... maybe Wisc, if they run the table ... maybe

Right now USC, LSU and OU look to be in a class by themselves, but lots of huge games ahead for all three. And if Dennis Dixon continues to play like the second coming of Vince Young, Oregon easily could stay in the mix.

Obviously, OU and LSU looked scary damn impressive on Saturday ... but, both were playing at home (as was Texas, which was in a dogfight until late in the third). I'd argue that Oregon, by far, had the most impressive win, however, because it was on the road and they completely and utterly dismantled a team with Henne, Hart, Manningham and a plethora of other blue-chip and future NFL players. Are you kidding me?

Has Michigan fired Carr yet?

Btw, based on the way Washington played, they also deserve a BCS bid.

Sin,

Dog and Felix
