AL WildCard prediction
As of Sep 3, The Yankees have a 2 game lead over Seattle and a 3 game lead over Detroit.
Toronto is 5.5 games back.
Seattle has lost the last 9 games it has played.
Who will make the AL playoffs as the wild card??
I predict Detroit will take the Wild Card lead by mid September and never look back!

Mark my words...you'll be watching the Yankees play in the post season while Manny's nursing his ruptured sigmoid.

I'm under the assumption most of us believe the divisions are pretty much locked up? No second place team is closer than 5-1/2 games...that's quite a bit of ground to make up in a month when the heat is on. The second place teams in the division are reserved to going after the wild card. Needless to say, I'll be wearing out the clicker this final 4 weeks with all of the key games coming up...WAR the Extra Innings package
The Tigers blew a gift wrapped opportunity to pick up a game on Cleveland, New York and Seattle yesterday by squandering a 7-0 lead to the A's. There is still 4 weeks to go but if the Tigers fall short by a game, they'll surely kick themselves for giving it away. They open the second last home stand of the season on Tuesday with three against the dreadful White Sox. Rogers is expected to be back for the game on Wednesday. Verlander and Bonderman have looked solid in their last couple starts and there is still an outside chance Sheffield could be back very soon.
I look at their prospects for the Central to be fading by the day and especially after they blew the game yesterday that would've gained a game on the Indians. They have the three game series at the Jake in the middle of the month but if they can't gain another game or at least stand pat...they'd have to sweep all three games just to pull within 2 or 3 games with only 9 games left. This team needs to worry about the Mariners and Yankees at this point.
They have the Mariners coming to town after their big series with the Yankees. The ideal situation would be for the Mariners to take at least 2 of 3 from the Yankees and the Tigers win their series with the White Sox...2 of 3 or a sweep. That would mean the Tigers are either a game back or even with Seattle and they'd each gain at least a game on the Yankees. The Tigers would gain two games if they sweep and the Mariners take 2 of 3. The Sox have been a thorn in the side of the Tigers so I'm not looking at their latest stretch of futility as a sign of weakness. The Tigers have been as inconsist as any team in baseball since the break...they haven't pieced together more than two wins in a row since they had a four game winning streak back in mid-July and they have only 2 series wins and 2 splits since the break.
The continued rallying cry has been through all that, they're still in contention for a playoff spot. The number of games are shrinking and the margin for error is getting smaller...take advantage of opportunities when they're in front of you and using the injury excuse is only going to get you a seat on the sidelines come October. They've got a tricky schedule this month if they can't put a consistent 4 weeks of baseball together, there will be a new AL champion for this year. Based on what they've been doing these last two months, I'm not confident they can do it. I'd favor Seattle in this race if they have a big week with their series against New York and Detroit. If they come out with 4 or 5 wins, I like them to take the wild card. The Jays have a lot of work to do but they do have the Yankees 7 times this month and a makeup game with the Tigers.

I've a question for you, fat face. What do you call someone whose very presence on a message board offers you nothing but irritating remarks and replies that were tired and used-up three generations of boards ago?
Your stupid nic, your propensity to interject a thread with thoughtless gibberish, the thought of the bloated pile of face fat typing out the same turd reply after reply after reply.
Yep....you all over. But I'm not going to ask that you "Off" yourself. The EMT's have more important things to do than lug your whale carcass down your driveway and into the meat wagon.
See...I have a heart and all and look at things that way. I don't wish death on someone justbecause they don't see things the way I do. And I don't ask for forgivness for a sports figure just because he isn't a Yankee.
What do you think your brother in retardation, Jack, would do if it were A-Rod or Jeter who were running a dog-fighting and gambling business? Would he ask us all to forgive him?
BULLSHIT He would!
God isn't the only one who knows what a hypocrite lies behind making such a stupid call as that.
What does Michael Vick have to do with a baseball thread?? You offered a shit take about how the Yankees are always kicking the Sox ass annually and I have 2004 to prove you wrong. Remeber that one Tard?? You know the one where the Sox hung the greatest collapse in sports history on your beloved boys in the Bronx??
You are a one trick pony Tardowen. You have the balls to say that my replys are the same time after time? If it has to do with anything Boston then there is Tardowen to chime in about how he hates it so much. These last 7 years have not been kind to you in that regard shit stain. The Sox & Patriots success eats at you to the core doesn't it? Well choke on it BITCH!! Your going to have more of it to deal with in the next 6 months and more. Then what are you going to post about? The Bruins? The Celtics? Nobody visits those forums anyway...
Face it Tard your act is old. I am glad my takes "irritate" you. Now stick that cold steel in your mouth and do what you promised to do so long ago. Cock it, squeeze it, and do the rest of this board a favor......
No use crying over spilled milk but with that series opening win for the Mariners yesterday, it makes that loss Sunday for the Tigers sting a little more. They could be a 1-1/2 back of the Yankees instead of 2-1/2. I do have to thank the M's for doing their part by beating up on the wild card leaders. I'd be cool with them sweeping the Yankees and taking the lead so the Tigers can have control of their own fate with that big series this weekend in Detroit. If the Tigers would be a game or two back of them by this weekend, they set themselves up for a chance to take the lead in the wild card race.
Jenks is human after all...a monster comeback for the Tigers this afternoon to pull even with the Mariners as they start that pivotal series tomorrow. Seattle definitely didn't help themselves and the Tigers out by losing 2 of 3 against the Yankees...both sit 3 games out.
The Yankees start a 9-game road trip with the Royals, Blue Jays and Red Sox. After they finish these first three with the Royals, they don't play another game against non-divisional foe the rest of the season. Although Toronto is holding onto slim hopes at the wild card, the Yankees don't face another fighting them for their spot and they control their own destiny. The one thing I find encouraging is that the Yankees are a game below .500 against their division and they go up against the other four AL East teams at least one more time. They have 6 games with the brutal Orioles but the Yankees are 4-8 against them and they're 8-7 against the Devil Rays; they face them in three more games. I can hope that final Red Sox series in Fenway next week will be Boston's chance to put the division on ice.
The Tigers and Mariners have work to do but the Yankees aren't going to be able to just skate into the playoffs by any means.
The probables for this weekend's Tigers-Mariners series:
Friday - Verlander vs. Batista
Saturday - Robertson vs. Weaver
Sunday - Bonderman vs. Hernandez
The makeup game with Toronto on Monday has a very attractive matchup: Rogers vs. Halladay

4-in-a-row for the Tigers no ground made up on the Yankees yet but they now have a 2-game cushion on the Mariners with one more game left in the series and the lead in the Central is down to 4-1/2 with the Tribe in action right now against the Angels. (Go Halos!) I was ruling out the division crown as a possibility about a week ago but if they can stay within 3 or 4 games with that final series looming...that's still an attainable goal.
Toddowen wrote:You guys had your once in a decade chance at the post season last year.
Coming from a guy that his team has made the postseason pretty much every year in the last decade...you're spoiled rotten as it is and I'd love to see you on the sidelines in October. I don't look at last year as being "our chance" but the Tigers kicked your ass though. If they don't make the postseason this year, they'll reload and come back next year. I see them needing to find another starting pitcher that eat up innings and take some pressure off the younger guys on the staff. This was definitely a bad loss today for the Tigers and it's likely Bonderman's last start of the season as well with questions about his health being raised. The Tigers pitching staff is on fumes right now...the bats weren't nearly enough.
Gotta give Curtis Granderson some love though...with a swipe today, he became the third player in history to hit 20 HRs, 20 doubles, 20 triples and steal 20 bases in one season. The Yankees past the Tigers as a team offensively during their tear in July but there have been some tremendous performances from the bats on this team. Ordonez is likely to hang onto the AL batting lead. A-Rod has had a monster year but Magg's season shouldn't be overlooked because he has half as many home runs. Plus, Polanco is looking at finishing in the top 3 in average and finish an entire season at second without an error. Guillen is looking to post new career highs in homers and RBI.
They're running out of bullets and they're running out of time. If they can't get any closer to Cleveland or New York within two weeks, I'd start looking towards next season. The Yankees and Tribe still need to take care of their own business because take it from TigerFan, you have to play to the final day of the regular season because no lead is safe.

Cunts.
Plus, your Raiders had to beat the Lions on Sunday to add insult to injury...oh wait.
Huge comeback win last night...the Tigers aren't quite dead just yet. They might've crushed any remaining hopes for the Jays as well. Halladay was awesome last night but Janssen could get that final out and Maggs and company made him pay. After breaking the Jays' hearts last night...I hope they can pick up the pieces and go beat up on the Yankees. The lead could get be cut down to two after today with a sweep in the doubleheader and a Yankees loss.

I gave up on the Wolverines this season already but I'm not giving up on the Tigers...
This next 7 days is the Tigers last good chance to make up ground on the Yanks and Tribe. This weekend, the Tigers travel to the Metrodome to face one of the only two teams they have a winning record against within the Central. Meanwhile, I'll be a huge Red Sox fan as they host the Yankees for the final three games of their season series. I'm encouraged to see the Yankees will have to go against Dice-K, Beckett and Schilling but they will have their three best starters going themselves in Pettitte, Wang and Clemens. The Tigers do have to face Santana on Saturday but he's 1-2 against Detroit this year and Magglio has owned him over his career.
The ideal scenario this weekend is obviously a Red Sox and Tigers sweep and the lead gets trimmed to a single game with 2 weeks left in the season. The Tigers did sweep the Twins at the Metrodome back in mid-July...part of their last quality stretch of games prior to their second half slide. They've turned it around in September so far with an 8-4 record and they finished this last home stand at 7-3. Realistically, to take 2 or 3 from the Twins and the Sox win 2 of 3...that can trim a game or two off the lead. They can't come out of this weekend still behind the Yankees by 4 or more games and expect to make up that ground in the last dozen games.
Then, with the Cleveland series starting Monday...that's there best chance to make a final bid for the Central. The Tigers will have to run into Carmona and Sabathia in that series but with the Tigers going to pretty much a 4-man rotation with Bonderman shut down...they'll have Verlander, Robertson and Rogers throwing in that crucial series. Losing any of those games is pretty much curtains for the Tigers as far as the division is concerned. The only way I see them making the comeback in the division is by sweeping Cleveland and getting the lead back down to 2 or 3 games. With a similar situation with the Yankees...I don't see them making up anything more than a 4 game deficit in the last two weeks of the season.

SoxNation gets a one finger salute from me after they blew that game last night. It's a helpless feeling when your team can win a game but they have to depend on other teams to win or lose to help them out. Just within the last couple of weeks, I point this game last night and the Tigers blowing the game against the A's...that's a 2-game difference in the standings. One of those games weren't in the Tigers' control but still, you don't expect the best team in baseball to blow a 7-2 lead in the 8th either. I'm hoping the Sox rise up the next two games and put the division virtually out of reach with two wins to close out the series.
Gotta love September baseball...
Gotta love September baseball...
Shoalzie,
I had a pit in my stomach after the game last night. It's amazing how very little in life upsets or rattles me but damn when the Sox play the Yanks and BLOW a lead that good so quickly, I feel like shit all day until they play again.
Thank GOD and god, we won today!
Tigers are onlt 2.5 back with 13 left to play for them and 14 left for the Yankees!
Yankees play 1 more agains the Sox, 6 against Baltimore, 4 against Toronto and 3 against Tampa Bay.
Detroit plays 4 against Minnesota, 3 against Cleveland, 3 against Kansas City and 3 against Chicago.
I figure the Yankees are likely to go 8-6.
Detroit is likely to go 8-5. They need to go 11-2 to have an honest chance, unless the Yankees fall apart which I do not see as likely.
Detroit has to play better against Chicago and Kansas City than they have all season long to have a shot.
GOOD LUCK!!

I very much appreciate the effort yesterday and the Tigers got their third win over Santana this year with a rookie making the start to boot. It keeps the Yankees' "magic number" at 12. While most people will probably be watching Pats-Bolts...I'll be glued to ESPN with the knowledge of what the Tigers did today and with the hopes that your boy Schilling can give us some help as well as put the Sox that much closer to clinching the East and holding onto the top record in the AL. With the season down to two weeks left...having one less game to make up will be huge for the Tigers if they can gain more ground after today. Can't cry over what happened Friday anymore...it's in the past. Look at winning this afternoon and keep the pressure on the Bombers.
The interesting thing looking ahead for the Tigers after today is how they handle the rotation with Bonderman done for the year and two off-days left on the schedule. It'll be Rogers/Verlander/Robertson most likely against Cleveland and then an off-day this Thursday. This gives Leyland the option to go with Jurjjens Friday on 5-days rest and go back to Rogers and Verlander Saturday and Sunday against the Royals. Monday against the Twins would be Robertson and then Leyland has to decide with Tuesday...either move everyone up a day and throw Jurjjens or hope he can squeeze another start out of Bazardo or another young starter in that spot against Minnesota and save Jurjjens for Wednesday. You have the day off again next Thursday before the final series in Chicago where Leyland can roll out Rogers/Verlander/Robertson again. You can worry about how worn out the starters are after this is done but you have to fire all the bullets you have and worry about what you do with the postseason if or when you get there.

Killer loss tonight...blowing a 5-1 lead in the 8th. I'm officially conceding the Central to the Tribe...congrats, Cleveland gets over on The D again this sports' year. Two crushing home runs in as many nights...the Jeter three-run bomb in the 8th last night and Blake's walk-off blast tonight.
The wild card lead also appears to be growing by a game with the Yanks handling the Orioles. New York showed lots of character this weekend in Boston and they look like they're not going to give up the wild card and could damn near catch the Sox while they're at it. Tonight is feeling like the beginning of the end for the 2007 Detroit Tigers.

Yup...mathematically they're still alive but realistically, that loss last night was the fatal blow. Losing two games to both the Indians and the Yankees with the just 10 games left...they'll need a miracle. I'm reserved to the fact it isn't going to happen. Too little, too late...Toddowen wrote:Ah...tough loss, Sholzie.
I don't know if you're saying that with tongue in cheek or you're serious but I wouldn't put it past the Yanks to leapfrog the Sox with the way things are going right now. All the momentum is on New York's side. It's almost a certainty that the Red Sox will sneak away with the wild card now.
All four AL playoff teams are very close to each other as far as record is concern...I consider this a wide open field when we get into October. I also consider all 4 AL teams to be superior to whichever 4 make it in the NL. The NL will be the underdog in the Series no matter what the matchup is. The Mets appeared to be the best out there but they're leaking oil right now just like the Red Sox are...they could miss the playoffs all together if they aren't careful.
The Tigers don't deserve to be there with 31-36 record in the second half. They played their way out of a spot. I held out hope they'd pull out a late run to overtake the Tribe or the Yankees but they're inconsistent play since mid-July will leave them on the sidelines and there will be a new American League representative in the World Series this year. The four teams in the playoffs right now deserve to be there more than the Tigers.

Just because you weren't alive for that one doesn't mean that 2004 was a greater collapse. But at least this year you guys still have the wildcard to fall back on.

Yeah, and in fact I'll go one farther. The AL playoff picture is all but set, at least in terms of who's in. Barring an epic collapse by any of these teams, the Red Sox, Yankees, Indians and Angels are all in the playoffs. The Angels clinched at least a tie for the division last night.Toddowen wrote:There's a post season to prove before I'll claim any BODE over RSN at this point. I could really care less about the AL East winner. We've made it and that's all that matters to me. Only the catastrophe would keep either the Yanks or the Red Pads out now.
Having said that, the seeding for the playoffs is still up in the air. You're right that the ALCS is more important than winning the AL East, but I'd rather play the Indians than the Angels in the first round. Winning the AL East increases the chances of that happening, although it's still possible to win the AL East and draw the Angels in the first round.

I am referring to the greatest collapse in post season history Terry. The Yankees are the only team to go up 3-0 in a series and lose. Thats what I am referring to....
I was 5 years old in 1978. I don't remember it but I have heard all about it. The wildcard makes this years version easier to swallow I think. We will see what happens in October....
For those not aware, The AL East race this year is more about the Yankees playing up to expectations in the second half of the season than it is about the Red Sox choking.
The Yankees were 42-43 in the first half with a winning percentage of .494
In the second half, that Yankees are 46-21 with a .638 winning percentage.
The Red Sox were 52-34 in the first half (.604)
and are 38-29 in the second half (.567)
*******
The Yankees team salary (not including luxury tax and revenue sharing) is $71 million more than the Red Sox team salary.
So, take A-Rod, Jeter, Petitte, and Rivera off of the Yankees team (which would approximatley balance team salaries) and I don't think this race would be so close.
However, Props to the Yankees for making it to the playoffs this year... because if you hadn't..
That would be humiliating!!!
I am conceding that Detroit will most likely not make the playoffs as the wildcard. The Yankees lead appears too great.

Lax,
I haven't seen you post under that nic in a long time. How are you?
From those to whom much is given, much is expected!
If the Red Sox were fighting for the ALCS with the Kansas City Royals(*),I would expect
Royals fan to bring up the salary card.
(*)- (approximate salary comparison similar to difference between Yankee salary and Red Sox salary).
You have to admit, if the Yankees don't win a World Series Ring this year, the season will be a total loss and embarassment for NY.
Compared to, if the Red Sox do not make the Post season this year, the season will be a total loss and embarassment for us.
*****************
To add to the above,
LA Angels at $109 Million, Detroit at $95 Million especially Cleveland at $61 Million are much more impressive to me as a team that can manage money and field a high quality team than my Red Sox.
Imagine adding all the players for Cleveland to the Red Sox team and still having $10+ Million left over. That would compare to Yankee team salary.
... just saying!
So, Cleveland Fan, if we meet in the ALCS, feel free to pull the salary card!
The Indians are the most impressive team in the ALCS this year!!
as much as I will hope to win the series, I can't help but be impressed with that team!!

I'm not a salary cap geek, it's more fun just to root for my team. However, you could have taken away Giambi, Pavano, Clemens, Mussina and Damon to approximately balance team salaries, and the race would still be close.Jack wrote:The Yankees team salary (not including luxury tax and revenue sharing) is $71 million more than the Red Sox team salary.

Your argument is selective at best, Jack. And look for overall salary to be cut next year. I'm pretty sure that neither Giambi nor Clemens will be back, and there have been a lot of youngsters who have come in and performed admirably for a fraction of the cost of the vets.
