ISU vs Iowa

Post by Danimal »

ISU generally ups their game to play big-brother, keeping-it-close or winning. But I wasn't expecting it this year considering just how lousy ISU has played and that Iowa has looked solid. Thus far(end of the 1st quarter) ISU is taking it to Iowa, up 6-0 and driving. I'll laugh my ass off if ISU wins this.

By the way, the game is in Versus for those who have that network. They actually get some solid games.

ISU with the throwback unis. can't' settle for FG's as much as they are controlling this game.

ISU should be up 16-0, that toss was perfect. But at-least their kicker is on today.

GAME OVER

WTF Iowa? I know ISU has a chip on it's shoulder about this game but isn't it about time you take this game VERY seriously? ISU just got worked by Kent and North Iowa then they beat you? Ferentz should have his team sky-high for these games considering no matter how bad ISU might be it is going to be a dogfight.

I picked Iowa in the pickem because I thought Iowa State was even worse than Notre Dame. I guess I was wrong.

Disappearance of me?? What is up with that every fucking time Iowa loses some of you seem to think I'm hiding?

ISU won the game. Oh well. Big deal. They suck, we played like shit. They deserved to win. Shit happens. Way to go ISU. You earned a hard fought victory. It's just one of those sports mysteries where one team that has far superior talent to the other always seems to struggle with the inferior team. Ferentz needs to figure out why ISU keeps giving this team so much problem. He's making $3 million, he shouldn't be getting owned by ISU and Northwestern. There's no excuse for it.

That said, it was a fluke and an upset. That happens from time to time.

Iowa will, as always, go on to have a much better season than ISU. Don't get me wrong, it sucks losing to them, but I'd rather lose to ISU and make it to a good bowl game than to suck donkey balls like ISU does every year and win the rivalry game.

Iowa is going to beat Wisconsin on Saturday. That is a guarantee.

Resident Sqawker Fan at work complained to me that Chizek had the audacity to play a spread offense vs. Ioway, something they didn't do in the previous 2 loses.

Him:So what were they doing? Practicing all fall for the Iowa game and not showing it in 2 losses?
Me: Probbly felt he'd get more love from the fans and alums beatin' you guys instead of a win vs. N. Iowa.
Him: That's just dumb.
Me: That's good coaching. With this one game Clone fan has forgotten the first two.
Him: I'm glad Meyer is a senior.
Me: (smiling)

*Side note, the kid caught the long ball at the 12 or so for the winning FG is Phil Bates from Omaha North, true freshman. His dad was an I-Back at NU.

That's great stuff. Funny thing about Meyer is that many Cyclone fans are glad he is a senior as well.

Bates is going to be special. Chizik has said there is no way they could redshirt him because of how talented he is.

Iowa just can't beat a team they're supposed to beat.

This phenomenon is particularly galling to me, because usually when ISU beats Iowa, the Hawkeyes are a certain loss for PSU.

2002 killed me - PSU played really well with a dynamic gameplan to defeat Nebraska 40-7, then came out against Iowa the next week, ignored all of the weaknesses ISU exposed, and tried to run right into the excellent Iowa run defense.

I remember two years ago the Badgers had a team that, as usual, was better than Iowa. Iowa was scheduled as Barry Alvarez’ last home game. Lot’s of post-game hoopla planned for right after the big win. Iowa kicked their butt 20-10.

Badgers should handle their business this weekend, but if they let the Hawkeyes stay in the game into the 2nd half, I’ll be drinking heavily.

If Wisconsin’s defense ever decides to start showing up for 60 minutes every week, I’d pencil them in for the Big 10 championship. Except I’d use a ball-point pen. If they keep showing up just when they feel like it, they’ll lose at PSU and possibly tOSU.

You contradicted yourself. Like you said Iowa always struggles with ISU. So how does Saturday qualify as a fluke? I agree that Ferentz is making way too much $ to get outcoached by ISU almost every year. I know ISU has a chip on it's shoulder when it comes to this game but shouldn't Iowa be taking it seriously too at this point? Yes, Iowa will go on to a better year than ISU, but that is one more reason you shouldn't lose to them.

A guarantee of victory against Wiscy? Bold. Ya Wiscy has played like crap the last two weeks but they are still a good program and it will be at Camp Randall, which should be jumping.

I think Wisconsin will make some noise yet in the Big 10 race. We've seen all kind of teams struggle early this year.

Starting out hot is not always the best thing. Football is about momentum - a team stocked with talent (like Wisconsin) can get rolling and be tough to beat later in the season. The point to remember about their early struggles is that they survived them, and they've undoubtedly learned a good deal from them.

Goober,

What the heck are you talking about you had a better team 2 years ago.....as usual?? Dude, in the last 25 years or so you've had maybe 6-7 better teams than Iowa. Fuck, Wisconsin was a fraud last year and they're a fraud this year. You'll be exposed on Saturday. The Badgers are a quality team, but that's it. Certainly not Top 10 and maybe not even Top 25. Wisconsin can win this game, but like fucking hell they're going to cover that 11 point spread. If I gambled on sports, i'd bet the house on Iowa to cover. Iowa wins 23-20.

And Danimal...

Yeah, I agree. There's no excuse for losing to ISU 7 out of 10 years when almost all of those seasons we've gone on to better years. You would think we'd start focusing in on this game more, but we just haven't. We simply cannot match their intensity and preparation for this game. That's all there is to it. Credit Dan McCarney for really putting a focus on this game. Even though he's gone, they played with the intensity their former coach would have preached to them for this game. ISU always has a major letdown after the Iowa game, so for those of you degenerates, you may want to put some cash on Toledo to cover. If I'm not mistaken, ISU has lost against the spread 8 or 9 straight years after the Iowa game. Wouldn't expect much different this year.

Wisconsin has had 6 better teams than Iowa’s just in the last 10 years, you delusional fuckwit. 1997-2000 and 2004-2005. The spread I’ve seen on the game Saturday is 8. If you can get 11, bet the farm on Iowa to cover. Wisconsin was a Top 10 team last year, and come January they will be again.

Nice win....

I just knew we'd give the Badgers everything they could handle. But injuries and suspensions are absolutely killing this team. We don't have 1 single WR that ISN'T a freshman. And now our starting TE and LG are out too. Not good when you have an inexperienced QB. Of our Top 5 WR's heading into the season, only our #4 WR is still on the depth chart, and our TE is probably done for the year. Ridiculous. We have some good young WR's, but they are all freshmen and so there's going to be some struggles along the way. On top of that, our entire 2-deeps on the O-line is all underclassmen. Not one senior. But defensively, I think we have one of the Top 3-4 defenses in the country. Mitch King, Ken Iwebema, Mike Klinkenborg, etc.....they have really come a long way since 2005.

Wisconsin ended up with 300 yards and 17 points but that was misleading. I did not like our prevent defense at the end of the first half and the Badgers got some yards that way and then towards the end of the game I believe they were a bit gassed. The rest of the game Wisconsin really did nothing offensively. It's no coincidence that Bielema is a former Hayden Fry/Kirk Ferentz assistant/player. His style of play is very similar. All 3 coaches want to line up and play physical football and wear the opponent down. Same with Barry Alvarez, who is from that same coaching tree.

I think Iowa's offense was pretty bad on Saturday, but I still thought the Badgers played good defense. They had a great gameplan of putting pressure on Christensen and it was successful. They mixed up their looks a lot too and that confused Jake. Both teams played physical football and we were just inches away from pulling that game out. If only Jake hadn't overthrown Cheney, we would have won....

And Iowa State, as predicted, failed to cover (or win) after the Iowa game yet again thanks to one of the most epic meltdowns I believe I have ever seen. The game was not on TV, but I saw the highlights last night and that was one of the biggest choke jobs in the history of sports. Man, it's depressing to think we fucking lost to this team. They are as bad as anyone in the country.

I knew that game was going to be close. It usually is with Iowa. If our QB Donovan did not always lock onto his primary receiver and throw to him even when he’s double-covered, and instead had thrown to the secondary receiver who was running free 30 yards down the field, we would have won by 30.

You are vastly overrating your team. You were overrated last year. It's not like Donovan had all day to throw. We put quite a bit of pressure on him. And he's not that great of a passer. Wisconsin is not a Top 10 team. They may be ranked there, but they are far from it. Iowa and Wisconsin are pretty even teams even with Iowa severely banged up. Dude, if Donovan even tried to go down field a lot more than he is, he'd throw a ton of picks. He's not a very good QB. The only reason he made plays against us last year is because of how poor our defense was thanks to a lack of effort. Heck, his throws in that game were horrible throws that looked good because we made such poor plays on the ball.

Your WR's are not that good either. Your big O-line had a lot of problems with our undersized but athletic D-line. Your team is much closer to Iowa in terms of how good they are than the rest of the Top 10. You may not want to believe that but anyone that's watched enough Badger games would say the same thing. If Wisconsin is the 9th best team in the country than Iowa is the 10th best.

Actually, Iowa would be 11th. Iowa State would be 10th.

Homer much, Jon? It's too bad tOSU doesn't play the Squawkeyes this year. We would easily beat you by 40+. And that's if we didn't cheat.

Yeah, JON, you said Wisconsin was a fraud last year when they went 12-1 and beat a team from the greatest conference in the history of the world on January 1. Must suck for Iowa getting beat by such a total fraud of a team. Two years in a row.

Wisconsin has the longest current winning streak in Div 1-AA. Smoke and mirrors, baby.

Enjoy your 6-6 season and your visit to the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
