This idiot didn't even have Kal on the list. No real surprise this guy writes for a division 3 web page. Surprised you can't only access it using dial-up.

Schools that don't have an on-campus stadium means you have bad fans?
You can't root for your state school because you never attended?

Actually, he does make a valid point on that one. Some of the worst fans of every school are those who not only didn't attend, but have no affiliation with the university, whatsoever (not even a dad or uncle who dropped out).Jobocky wrote:You can't root for your state school because you never attended?

If you read between the lines, dude is a Kal fan. Which is why they didn't make the list (although, in fairness, I'm not convinced that m2 is an accurate example of KalFan).Jimmy Medalions wrote:This idiot didn't even have Kal on the list.
As for this:
As does just about every other 1-A school in the country with a substantial fan following. Newsflash: ND only has about 150,000 living alumni (and that's probably a generous estimate), so of course they're not going to be a big-time program without a substantial fan following outside of their students and alumni. ND also doesn't have the advantage of being anyone's State U, so to acquire a fan following, they've kinda sorta become National Catholic U.If there’s one thing I hate more than fair-weather fans, its college football fans who never attended the university. Notre Dame has a slew of them.
I suppose I could goThe Irish also have a ton of fans who don’t really know much about football other than Notre Dame used to be really good. I’ll give you one example, the Irish faithful continue to contend the reason for their struggles this year is Ty Willingham. Ridiculous.

I'm with Jsc here. He probably feels slighted. LSU fans are hands down the worst. Even worse than taco tceh. The taco tossers just play tough. Deep down, I don't think they really mean the classless shit they do. Coon asses, however, are just stinking piles of shit who want to rub some of it on you.
I gotta stand up for the SEC, LSU and Jsc...they deserve some recognition for the worst fans in CFB. Se bon je! huh? Aheeeeee!

Well, as PAC10 guy, and a person who just dealt with large amounts of Kalfan in the environs of a Kal game...(although, in fairness, I'm not convinced that m2 is an accurate example of KalFan).
I'd say mToolio isn't really an accurate example of Kalfan.
He's way more masculine than the average Kalfan, and seems to know a great deal more about football.
And because teams like Texas et al get what's basically "default fanship" from the general populace of their region who doesn't have a specific dog in the fight due to not attending a school with BIG TIME POWER COLLEGE FOOTBALL, that makes them "bad fans"?
Wouldn't roping in fans who didn't attend the university be a good thing, making a larger fanbase?
Farmers often don't get the opportunity to attend college. They can't be fans of a major university? A kid from Austin who went into the Marines after high school isn't allowed to root for Texas? Or A&M? Or whatever team he grew up rooting for on TV when he was a kid? If you're from Bumfucked Nebraska, you're a "bad fan" if you attended community college, but are still on board with Big Red?
I'm so far from grasping the logic behind this, I've quit trying to figure it out.
I'm guessing that among people who didn't attend a university with a D1A powerhouse, for whatever reason, I'm guessing that Christians in general are more likely to root for a band of marauding Golden Catholics than an outfit named the Lions... some of those Christers still hold a grudge from wayback.

A little off topic, but about a month ago I met this AU chick in Scottsdale. She was pretty smokin' but of course her douchebag boyfriend was lurking around at the other end of the bar. She and I got to talkin' about War Eagle and the inconsistencies of Brandon Cox and before long she started spilling all the shit that's been pissing her off lately regarding her boyfriend. One of those details being that he hated CFB and once fell asleep in the first quarter of an Auburn game. Normally, I live a very Mother Corleone-way of life and do not interfere with the personal lives of others, but I told her straight up (with the dude staring right at me) that she needed to drop the Citadel right off the schedule, so to speak. Never did get her number or bang her in the men's bathroom, for that matter, but they were arguing for the rest of the night and I'm pretty sure she left without him. Which made me feel good.. about me.

It's a whole new topic, but everyone has their own opinion on what constitutes a fan. Most of us who attended the university we root for generally feel a little more of a fan because of personal experience at the institution. I'm really indifferent. There are some pet peaves I do have when it comes to fans though.
1. Bandwagon - Last year, here in Southern Indiana, you would not believe the amount of t.u. gear I saw being sported. People traded in their USC gear for t.u. Now there's a lot of floriduh gear around. Fucking hate the yearly bandwagoners. Those are not fans.
2. Dual fandom different sports - Otherwise known as your Cicerown25. No explanation needed. Got a buddy here who likes Miami in football and Kentucky in basketball. Nice guy and a friend but he is not a real fan.
3. Dual fandom same sports - Otherwise known as your Jsc810. I like LSU because I live near there. I like TCU because I went there. I like Notre Dame because I saw a clover today. I still don't know what irks me more, DFDS or DFSS. This is no real fan.
4. Die hard WE fan no affiliation - Also referred to as the m2 fan. I think this is the one that pisses me off the most. The fan who has no affiliation whatsoever with a school that not only pimps them but is the in your face "WE kicked your ASS!" if the team they root for beat your team. This fan will generally turn the WE back around on you and asked if you played for your alma mater. Most alums refer to their alma mater as WE because you attended. I did not attend the Tennessee Titans University so I don't say WE when referring to that team I root for.
5. 50 Bachelor Fan - also known as the Atomic Punk. This Fan attended almost every major Div 1A program at some point in their life.
All in all, I'm sure we all have our variations of fans. These are just some of mine.

In my opinion, it's no contest that #2 is worse than #3. I pull for Notre Dame in everything. Always have, always will. But I also want to see MSU do well (graduate) and a few other schools here and there (for some reason, I've alwayse like Syracuse). So I have no issue with that. But the "I'm a Tennessee football fan and Kentucky basketball fan" pisses me right the fuck off. I did that when I was 10 because I didn't get to see ND play basketball. I don't really give a fuck about basketball, but if I root, I root for ND.IndyFrisco wrote:2. Dual fandom different sports - Otherwise known as your Cicerown25. No explanation needed. You see a lot of these fans here in Michigan. You have the Wallmart Wolverines during football season, and the Save-alot Spartans during basketball season. Choose one and fucking root for it. You shouldn't have to figure out what sport is being played to decided what gear to slip on.

This has always bothered me too for some reason. Around these parts, you see a fair share of Penn State football/Syracuse basketball fans. Of course, those fans are, in each sport, following the team with the most success. Then again, so is Cicerown25.IndyFrisco wrote:2. Dual fandom different sports - Otherwise known as your Cicerown25. I have to plead guilty to this one, albeit to a much more limited extent than JSC.3. Dual fandom same sports - Otherwise known as your Jsc810. I like LSU because I live near there. I like TCU because I went there. I like Notre Dame because I saw a clover today. I still don't know what irks me more, DFDS or DFSS. This is no real fan.
Growing up, I was a fan of Penn State in addition to ND. When I first started following sports, Penn State was eastern college football, at least at this level. Syracuse was horrible back then, and I was 12 by the time Pitt won a national championship with Dorsett. So that left Penn State in the east. But ND was always a clear #1 and Penn State #2. Or at least, it was very clear in my mind. If I were pressed for a #2 team, I'd probably still say Penn State, but since I went to ND the schism between #1 and #2 has only widened.
I'm more guilty of this in basketball. I also root for Syracuse when they aren't playing ND. I also root for Pepperdine in basketball on a limited basis since I went to law school there.
In fairness to m2, IIRC he did attend Cal for one semester. So I suppose he has some connection to Cal, similar to Babs' connection to Michigan State, at least.4. Die hard WE fan no affiliation - Also referred to as the m2 fan. I think this is the one that pisses me off the most. The second part of #4, i.e.
applies to AP as well. He turned the WE around on me with respect to ND in precisely the manner you mention. Yeah, he did so as something of a general pet peeve, but there are far more appropriate examples elsewhere on this board to vent this particular pet peeve than at me within that context. This fan will generally turn the WE back around on you and asked if you played for your alma mater. Most alums refer to their alma mater as WE because you attended. I did not attend the Tennessee Titans University so I don't say WE when referring to that team I root for.
Here, to me, is the difference between college and pro sports teams: the largest universities that play sports at the 1-A level have an enrollment of maybe 50-60,000 students at any given time. By contrast, the smallest metropolitan areas that support pro sports teams at the major league level have populations ten times that amount. Or more. The connection between a college sports team and the college/university it represents is far, far more intimate than is the connection between any major league pro sports team and the metropolitan area it represents. For that reason, any college sports fan who roots for a college team that represents a school he/she graduated from has earned the right to use the term "WE" in referring to that team, at least imho (note: in saying this, I'm not denigrating the subway alumni, and I certainly recognize their importance to ND's tradition, but there's a closer connection to the actual alumni).

I saw a shitload of Texas gear after they beat USC, you even see that crap here in Nebraska. I cheered for the horns in that game but suddenly running around in their gear is the epitome of bandwagoning. Although that is still not quite as annoying as the dipshits that(when were better and lost much more rarely) ran out and got the gear of whomever had beaten us like FSU or OU. No that doesn't make you cool or a rebel, it just makes you a douchebag.

Just a guess, but it may have something to do with the age of the people in question.IndyFrisco wrote:Shine,

If I were 10 years younger than I am, but everything else in my life was the same, I have no doubt I'd still be a ND football fan. In basketball, however, I'd probably root for ND because I went there, but I would call some other school, likely Syracuse, my basketball team.
Kids tend to become fans of more successful programs. ND had a very strong basketball program in the 70's. In fact, after ND beat DePaul by 20 to reach the Final Four in '78, Al McGuire said that ND was the next basketball dynasty.
That didn't happen, of course. But ND came so close to being a basketball power that it's enough to make you cry if you're a fan of the team. The team had been sucessful enough, when I was a kid, that I came to ND a basketball fan in addition to a football fan. However, the basketball program declined enough after that, that I'm not sure I can say the same for the people who came after me.
ND has pulled out of the basketball tailspin somewhat over the past ten years, but I'm afraid that the window of opportunity to take the program to the truly elite level has now closed forever.

i think there's a lot of gray area to consider when criticizing frisco's dfds, especially if those allegiances were developed in grammar or high school, before university was an actual decision to be considered.
1. college teams are treated as professional sports, at least until it comes time to consider stipends for athletes or institute a playoff for ceollege football, then the athletes become "students." successful teams obviously generate more interest than losing teams, so naturally the media gives them more play and the community lends its support. it's perfectly reasonable to expect a 10-year-old in in southern indiana to love iu basketball and not even realize the same school has a football team. it's the environment he grew up in.
2. some ppl are simply reasonable bandwagon fans. or at least i think i'm one. the only sport i really care about is michigan football. as far as basketball goes, i could care less most of the time. i'd love to see michigan do well, but since they generally end up 4-26 i have no issue watching msu in the tournament with my state friends and hoping they do well. it's not like i'm going to run around saying we're number one or head off to the other steve and barry's to buy a state hoodie. the extent of my joy is, oh, cool. i still root for umich when they play msu.
3. being a college fan is a form of elitism. ppl who attended the school they root for are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves from the general population. that's fine, you went to the school and experienced a spirit week or two, you've had firsthand experience with all the pageantry and traditions, but if attending the university was what made for a real fan then we'd all be a bit more interested in our high schools' teams than i assume most of us are.

I don't really see a problem with having "back-up" teams to root for, as long as you're consistent with your #1 favorite. I will root for CU over anyone in any sport, but I also like to see CSU and AF do well in football, simply because they're from Colorado. In basketball, I also kind of root for Mizzou. I had a buddy from KC when I was growing up who was a Mizzou fan and I just kind of latched onto them back in the Derrek Cheivous (sp?) era.
By the same token, the teams I hate also change from sport to sport. I would actually root for the Huskers over a number of teams in basketball. I despise Kansas & UNC in basketball, but I'm pretty neutral on their football teams.

"Keys, woman!"
Addressing the dual sport fan, an interesting topic for the IF clan. Pops is a ATM guy while moms is an IU gal. The potential for a dual fan looms large for the IF offspring. Although the way ATM is going lately IU football might be just as/more appealing of an option.
"Our staff is going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,'' Crean said in a statement. "We fully expect our student-athletes to accept the responsibilities academically, athletically and socially that come with representing one of the top programs in college basketball history."

You are smoking dope if you leave Cal fans off the list, and make that crack if you don't put them at number one. Ever been to Berkeley? I have, and win or lose you can be guaranteed to have garbage thrown at you, cuss words spewed at your wife and so forth.
And like UCLA fans, when they're getting stomped they leave. I've seen it happen too many times.
You are either clueless, or grossly misinformed. I guess that's why you write for a division 2 web page.

I'll try my damdest to get the boy to be an Aggie fan. At some level, he will be. And I'd love for nothing more than for him to attend A&M. Not sure how I would handle him being that far away. Thank God that is a long ways down the road anyway. If the one that is due next month is a girl, she's going to local community college. Her chastity belt will not be allowed out of the city limits.Shine wrote:Addressing the dual sport fan, an interesting topic for the IF clan. Pops is a ATM guy while moms is an IU gal. And I'll tell the boy to pick one, not both or neither. Up to him who he wants to root for. I wouldn't be hurt if he picked IU. It's local. I actually like IU's campus. reminds me a lot of A&M's campus. Great basketball tradition. Then again, the way A&M's basketball is coming around, he may opt for that one instead of AT&TGate.
