THE bet

Post by M Club »

sig bets are blah. half of us are illiterate anyhow [prominently featured in the mizzou-kansas thread] and can't read them in the first place. therefore, i propose a shirt/avatar bet. when michigan wins you osu hacks have to buy this shirt:

Image

and afterward you must take a picture of yrself - thumbs up, a bright smile - and post it to the board. look pretty, b/c that's yr new avatar.

if something catastrophic happens between now and then - gravity fails, gwb mumbles something remotely coherent, osu wins - then we michigan bandwagoning lowlifes will buy the osu equivalent and do the same.

in.

I'm in, I will look for a good shirt.

Also, what about a small monetary donation to the winning school charity? So, if UM wins, I will donate $5/10 to the victors club in my name and vice versa?

How about this for our shirt:

maybe i could hijack the osu donations and divert them to namibia [imagine]? the pc hiv/aids committee sells calendars every year around this time to raise money for education and prevention programs that current volunteers create for their schools. i used to run the committee and was responsible for handing out the dosh, and 99.5% of money raised [aside from calender costs, and if i remember correctly there's about a 600% markup] was directly applied to the proposals. it's $12 and you'll get a calendar out of the deal, if that's cool.

How about this for our shirt:

I'm in for the calendar. It would be nice if all of our hot air actually did something besides reducing our productive hours. So are we saying calendar and tshirt? I'm cool with that but I could see some saying no to $25.

It may saound racist but they all look the same to me. Seriously...I could not tell the difference between what you posted and what I posted. Yeah, I googled ethiopia to get my pic. I would not have known the difference in the pics though.

No, I'm in regardless and I like the idea of buying a shirt. I have a UM shirt believe it or not but I will buy an IHH if he finally beats tOSU.

it sounds racist, but only because we're hyper-sensitive to the accusation, what, all black people look alike? i don't think it's an indicator of racism as much as it's a marker of ignorance. not ignorance like you root for an sec team and justify sex with your sister b/c you're 42 and she's 17, so it's not like you ever lived together; but ignorance like you've never been to africa and become attenuated to the physical differences between tribes. the flip was that many of the ppl i lived near couldn't tell the differences between white folk. i got away with my girlfriend staying in my house so often b/c ppl thought we looked alike and figured she was my sister, even though she was half black. then there are northern asians. it wasn't till i taught esl to families at umich that i was able to peg which country people were from. africans tend to call anyone who looks remotely asian a "china."

No, not that all blacks look alike to me. All tribal folk dressed in the manner in which both you and I posted look alike to me. You probably see differences in hair/jewelry/clothing. I do not.

maybe i latched onto the black thing, but the phenomenon still exists. and yes, i'm fairly decent at placing general regional differences.

Yeah, I agree. It is ignorance. Not proud or ashamed of it. Just indifferent. Impossible to know everything about everything when you aren't from the U&L. ;)

I wouldn't worry about it, IF. Most SEC folk don't even know what an airplane looks like, let alone understand regional differences.

OK, lets get a tally here.

Who is in for the sig bet / calendar purchase? tOSU wins, you UM guys have to buy a calendar and we pick your sig till bowl season is over. UM wins, we run the opposite.

MClub, we'll just do a side bet with the Tshirts and pics.

everyone seems so assured their team will win. you don't actually have to wear the shirt unless your team loses. ergo, it seems i only have to wait for sky to post that pic...

calender info:
If you want to purchase the Namibia 2008 calendar and you want to mail
them home...it might be easier to just send my mom an email with how
many calendars you want to buy and where you want them sent. The cost
of the calendars in the States is $11, but that includes shipping.

My mom's email is duffyd@optonline.net.

If family members from home want to buy them...just have them send a
check payable to:
Shayna Dooling
18 Donack Lane
Bellport, NY 11713

They can email my mom too and let her know where to mail them.

If you have any questions, just let me know.
i'll find an osu shirt this week and fulfill the terms of my bet with sky.

Shoalz,
I took your "im in for the sig bet" from a different thread. You never said yes to the calendar so don't worry about it. You know, what's $11 to a bunch of starved HIV+ no running water kids from Africa. I wouldn't lose any sleep.

Don't give that me guilt trip shit around the holidays...

Just tell me where to write and I'll scratch a bigger check than $11 for the cause. I need to find places to donate some money...those folks over there need the money more than I do.

about five other volunteers and i used some of the calendar money to arrange for students to tour the hiv facilities at a local hospital as well as undergo testing. it sounds inconsequential to take 80 random learners on a field trip of sorts, but aside from making it out of the village and into towns to actually get tested, there are a lot of misconceptions about the testing process that these kids were probably able to clear up much more effectively than i was by simply telling them it was a good idea. plus hiv is talked about openly in a hospital setting, whereas in the village no one has aids but a lot of ppl get malaria. we used money for food and transport; the testing is offered free by the namibian government. some photos:

my students and me

getting a tour

waiting for the counseling that precedes the tests

waiting for test results

and none of mine had hiv. phew. results are confidential, but they wore their relief quite openly.
