Ferentz to Michigan Part II
According to Hawkeyenation.com owner Jon Miller and from what Jon just said on his radio show here in Des Moines, he’s spoke with media members from Michigan and Iowa that are closely connected to Michigan and Ferentz and say that Ferentz is #1 right now on Michigan’s list and they are going to make a big offer for Kirk. One that I could see him possibly accepting.
I’ve thought all along that Kirk would be #1 on Michigan’s list. I know a couple of you on here want to deny this, but I think you’re in denial.
Miller said that according to his sources, Michigan will not interview Kirk. They’ll give him an offer and it will be up to him to accept or decline. But no formal interview will take place, allegedly.

I still believe Carr has more say in this than people are willing to admit. He absolutely hates Les Miles. And I think someone very close to LLLLLLoyd was purposely sent on a sabotage mission before the SECCG to make an LSU-to-UM decision that much harder on Miles. Or else, the UM AD is a lot dumber than I thought if he was the one that talked directly to ESPN.
Carr's favorite guy that still has a legitimate shot at landing the job is Ferentz. And I wouldn't at all be surprised if that ends up being the final decision.

Frisco,
Do you believe everything you hear from an AD? Of course he made it clear Miles was #1 because that’s the guy they wanted after Ferentz turned down his offer. Do you think Michigan wants it to go public that they went after Iowa’s coach and got turned down? At least with LSU they got turned down by a guy coaching in the SEC/National championship game so it doesn’t look so bad. Michigan is arrogant. They’d look bad if Iowa’s coach turned them down and they don’t want that.
Trust me, if Ferentz gets hired, Bill Martin will come out and say “this was our #1 guy.” AD’s are all full of crap. Don’t believe a word they say.

Why are Michigan fans so against Ron English? I’m just curious. Your last few coaches all were coordinators, not head coaches and they all had success (well, Moeller was only there for a short while and then the booze got the best of him!). Why would that be such a bad hire?
The guy knows the Michigan program and he’s had some pretty good defenses. I’ve seen nothing but negative talk from Michigan fans about him and am just curious as to why that is. To me, he seems like a decent hire. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Michigan should have him anywhere’s near the top of their list but if all else fails I think he’d be a decent fallback guy.

If by "last few" you mean Lloyd Carr, then you are dead on. Moeller was the head coach at Illinois for a stint before coming back on Bo's staff, and Bo came directly from the cradle of coaches, Miami of Ohio.TheJON wrote:Why are Michigan fans so against Ron English? And hiring assistants at a major school with no head coaching experience is a very risky proposition. I'm sure UofM wants to stay away from what happened at ND, Miami, etc.
And English hasn't proven himself to be a good DC, much less one that is ready to take over a major program. Frankly, I don't see where the high opinion of English comes from.

is this from the dept. of redundancy dept.?TheJON wrote:I know a couple of you on here want to deny this, but I think you’re in denial.
it's not english, per se, but more that michigan football needs a change. the transition from bo to moeller worked out well b/c moeller was groomed for the role and the bo coaching philosophy still had relevance in the early 90s, and i suppose lloyd worked out well if you consider only three out of 13 seasons with two losses or less pretty successful, but our two coordinators right now are mike debord and ron english, and if one of them's going to get it, it'd be lloyd's bff. english isn't much of a viable candidate anyhow. he only has two years' experience as defensive coordinator and neither of his teams were much against the spread, which demonstrates that michigan tradition of an inability to adjust. not just in-game; i mean they can't adjust to 2001, and we're fast approaching a new decade. Why are Michigan fans so against Ron English? as far as ferentz coaching michigan, i agree completely with your assessment of his coaching abilities, i just don't think that translates into success at michigan. i don't need to see the same shitty coordinators in anne arbour for ten years b/c a michigan man values loyalty above winning or some shit like that. we need some dynamism to take advantage of the resources michigan has as a football program. i'm not necessarily disappointed in an 8-4 season, but i am that it's become par for the course. there's no reason someone like mike hart had to play on four teams that couldn't beat ohio state or win a bowl game [calling my shot against florida], and i don't think ferentz is going to ruffle enough feathers to change the type of thinking that dominates the football program right now.
At-least your new top-candidate isn't just two years removed from coaching high-school ball. Ark-fan is jocking Malzahn now. I'd be interested in him as a OC, but HC at a big-timer? I'd say he needs to go to a Houston or SMU first.
Miles I just can't see after that presser. He'd look like a bigger bullshitter than Sabin if he jumped after that. LSU gave him a fat new contract, I'd say it is over.
There are plenty of good candidates out there though, if the guy in-charge of hiring isn'ta dumbass anyway. You're Michigan for piss-sakes.

Unless he's C. Thomas Howell in disguise, I'm pretty sure Ron English is black.IndyFrisco wrote:Michigan needs to be sure they interview their token black dude. Maybe that's what's taking them so long? Can't find one suitable to deny the job to?

I know English is black. I said to be sure they did the interview. The media throwing his name around won't be good enough for the BCA.L45B wrote:Unless he's C. As more reports come out, it doesn't seem this is the case. Several people from LSU tried to contact Martin, but he was AWOL.IndyFrisco wrote:Michigan AD has already made it clear that Miles was #1 on their list. He's gone. Everyone else is fighting for #2.
An excerpt from this morning's Free Press sums it up best:
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti ... 048/SPORTSWe might never know the real explanation. But we do know this: Les Miles wanted Michigan, and when he needed somebody in authority to say Michigan wanted him, nobody could find the athletic director.
This is definitely looking more and more like a case of how much pull Carr really has on this situation. Take a look at all the guys UM is considering right now: all of Carr's buddy's. I don't think Martin ever really seriously went after Miles, just did what it took to appease the UM alumni and fan base. And now it has backfired considerably.
And no, S_M, Debord still has no chance.
